To want to throttle neighbour's cat and neighbour!!

Helpme20 · 05/08/2021 14:24

My neighbour's cat spends her days on our cars. It has now left scratches on both our brand new cars - more mine than DH. I saw neighbour yesterday and mentioned about the cars and she just went 'oh naughty Simba'..and did a little laugh and walked off.
AIBU to say to her that she either keeps her cat away from my car or she can pay to sort out the scratched.

@AlmostSummer21

There's something wrong with your paint job if a cat getting on & off your car is leaving 'scratches'.

I suggest you go back to the dealer

This is absolute nonsense! 🤣 Cats have claws sharp enough to dig into hardwood tree trunks and hold them whilst they climb up. Of course they bloody scratch car paint! Exact same thing has happened to me! Is your car made of rubber?!?!
PerciphonePuma · 05/08/2021 23:44

@hamsterchump

Cats aren't legally considered property (which is why you don't legally have to report it if you hit one with your car unlike a dog for example) so she isn't liable legally for any damage the cat does. Of course she might not know this as most on here don't and so might be intimidated into paying but legally she won't have to.
Incorrect, sorry

Water pistols. Every time you catch cat on the car or near the car, squirt it. Bugger all neighbours can do really. Cats do what they like. You can deter it though with the water

PerciphonePuma · 05/08/2021 23:52

@MrsCatE

There is no way a cat could cause damage on a normal car !! Are you bonkers?! Just imagine, I casual meander near a hedge; FUCK ME; a hedgerow fucked my finish.
It's happened to me! Cats claws are designed to hoist cats up trees and in doing so, dig in to hardwood tree trunks!!! Have you never heard of a car being 'keyed' ?! If a bloody blunt Yale key can scratch a car then super sharp cat claws certainly can!!!!!

How do you wash your car?
I got scratches on my brand new car a few years ago when I used one of the self service brushes at the garage

PerciphonePuma · 05/08/2021 23:54

@rustyspoon45

Genuinely never heard of this happening. Not saying you're making it up but if this were a widespread problem I would have expected to hear about it by now given the amount of cats/cars about.

Yeah it's for you but what do you expect her to do about it?

She can cut the claws. Or you could use a deterrent around your car? She should pay but then again how can you prove it was her cat? It's annoying but any damage can occur to a car parked out in the open. My friends windscreen was once smashed by a humongous bird shit while it was parked on her drive. She couldn't very well sue the bird.

I do believe car owners should take responsibility for their pets but as they are legally allowed to roam it can be easier said than done. If she agrees that her cat did the damage then the decent thing would be to pay for it but if she doesn't then I'm not sure there's a lot you can do.

Ahem.... Hmm

Yet again, just because you haven't heard of it or had it happen to you, it cannot possibly be true, can it?!

Not sure if this counts as a stealth boast, or a horrible admission of shame... but: I have two brand new cars sitting on my drive. I also have several cats who have always enjoyed sitting on, and jumping onto the garage room from, my cars. Old cars were a shabby old Ford of about 22 years old, the other a slightly less shabby soft top convertible, but still over 15 years old (the cats are attracted to the warmth of a black soft top!)

But none of my old car, or my new cars, have been damaged by my cats. Well, not unless you count leaving hairs on the old soft-top. My big girl even used to jump down from the garage roof onto the roof of my old Ford, and never once left a dent!

So, as both a cat lover/owner and car lover/owner, I can't say I've ever had any of the issues the OP has had. And my two new cars are worth a far bit (one is still a convertible).

Cats really can't cause that much damage to cars. Unless I've been misled horribly, and rendered blind, by my feline tribe for the last 25 years or so Grin

Hmm

@DizzySquirrel90

Sounds more like a very minor polish scratch, something that would probably polish off. Cats claws are no way sharp enough to physically scratch through a cars paintwork unless they are using it as a scratch post? A picture would help.
Yes, they really can!

Fancymice · 06/08/2021 10:51

Well if Google says it it must be true Hmm

I would imagine they are superficial scratches that OP could polish out with t cut, but of course that would be too simple.

Bookworm20 · 06/08/2021 15:16

An apology is what I was really after..am astounded that some people find it so hard to apologise.

No it wasn't. You are after money to repair the tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage to your '2021' plated cars.

One isn't a Ranger by any chance is it?

MrsCatE · 06/08/2021 19:46

Ffs. Good luck with your money grabbing intentions.

Aliceclara · 06/08/2021 20:24

I'm a cat owner and my cat sometimes sits on my car. At first I thought he might scratch it, but that hasn't been the case. A cat jumping on a smooth shiny surface wouldn't use its claws to grip. They have retractable claws, unlike dogs, and they use their pads to help them balance on a surface like that. I would try cctv as you suggest to check that's what's causing it.

[meanwhile, I’m ‘gloving’ numerous cats with industrial grade diamond shavings in order to FUCK up anyone with a 2021 licence plate. Cackles; BWAHHHAHHAAA!!!]

As a cat lover and owner I can guarantee you can’t keep them locked up! Mine sleeps on our car but not other peoples! I would use the water pistol approach. I love my cat soooooo much he’s wrecked all my furniture but I don’t care :-)

VenusSap · 07/08/2021 02:56

I’d keep a jug of water by the door and throw it over the bloody cat every time it was on my property and on the car. It will soon learn to piss off when it’s getting wet all the time.

Send the bill to them also.

Hahaha...but you can't say these things or else @MrsCatE and @Fancymice might get their claws out! Despite so many people, even cat owners saying it happens, they are too deluded and in denial lol

@helpme20 lots of people have made actual practical suggestions on this thread, but you seem more happy to piss and moan about how shit the owners are and how you expect a grovelling apology from them even though you don't actually have concrete proof that is was their cat that scratched the car. As others have said, it could have been the cat or it could have been scratch whilst washing etc etc.

KarlMaldensNose · 07/08/2021 14:22

Just to confirm he DOES have claws they’re just not extended when he climbs all over my car Before anybody thought I was cruel And my car is probably worth ‘ten pounds’ 😻
Hen2018 · 07/08/2021 14:39

I had a goat jump onto the bonnet then roof of my car once (I grew up on a farm). A tiny chip of paint needed touching up.

Tell us more about the brand new, tens of thousands of pounds worth of cars and Surrey.Wink

VenusSap · 07/08/2021 15:24

@Helpme20

Let them 😂 I don’t let cats come in my garden as I have rabbits. Iv chucked water at them so many times that they don’t even bother now 😂

Suzi888 · 07/08/2021 15:34

@PhilCornwall1

It's on footage it's the cat. The owner should pay for the damage!
🤣 ^ Just saw this
