To want to throttle neighbour's cat and neighbour!!

Helpme20 · 05/08/2021 14:24

My neighbour's cat spends her days on our cars. It has now left scratches on both our brand new cars - more mine than DH. I saw neighbour yesterday and mentioned about the cars and she just went 'oh naughty Simba'..and did a little laugh and walked off.
AIBU to say to her that she either keeps her cat away from my car or she can pay to sort out the scratched.

@DizzySquirrel90

Sounds more like a very minor polish scratch, something that would probably polish off. Cats claws are no way sharp enough to physically scratch through a cars paintwork unless they are using it as a scratch post? A picture would help.
Will get a picture tomorrow morning..it's pouring down now

Well I suggest you check what they are washing your car with - there is far more chance the scratches are caused by even a tiny piece of dirt on a sponge or cloth than there is by the cat. You may have video evidence of the cat sitting on your car but I doubt it shows the car scratching your car. My husband is ridiculously obsessed with our cars and would never dream of taking them anywhere near a car wash or even a hand car wash for that very reason. We do however have 2 cats and even he doesn’t object if either of them chooses to sit on the car

Musmerian · 05/08/2021 19:10

Don’t be daft. Cats are roaming creatures and your neighbour is not responsible. You’ll have to find some deterrent yourself. Cats can’t just be kept indoors- that is just a weird Mumsnet thing.

Sweetpeasaremadeofcheese · 05/08/2021 19:16

My cat has scratched my car from jumping on it. She has also left quite deep scratches from jumping on (and slipping off) my solid wood buffet chest. I saw it with my own eyes. Just because other people haven't had it happen to them doesn't mean it didn't happen ffs Hmm

EvilPea · 05/08/2021 19:23

A cover won’t work, the cat will just claw the cover (and the car underneath) as the fleece is nice on their claws - speaking from bitter experience.

mrscatmad31 · 05/08/2021 19:23

Outdoor cats shouldn't have their nails cut, they need to be able to climb trees and things to get away from predators. Of course the neighbour shouldn't pay for the damage

stellaisabella · 05/08/2021 19:40

It would be a terrible shame if simba was caught short next time she was on the car, and left a giant turd on it Grin

@HoobleDooble

One of my neighbours chucked a bucket of water over my nervous rescue cat for crossing his garden a couple of days after she'd plucked up the courage to venture out ... He didn't look quite so smug (or dry) after he answered my knock on his door and got the same back.
Well done!
Mum2jenny · 05/08/2021 21:05

I’d report you for assault HoobieDoobie in that scenario.

@PhilCornwall1

It's on footage it's the cat. The owner should pay for the damage!
😂😂😂😂😂😂

How have you got screenshots from OP's CCTV footage?

Of course they do, they grow out and they snag, especially more sedentary cats.

Again, why not? Her pet caused the damage.

The fact cats are allowed to own does not absolve their owners of any responsibilities. Her pet is causing damage, she needs to find a deterrent, why should OP? It's not her pet!

No one is saying the cat should be kept indoors, what people are saying is that the neighbour should have some level of accountability or at least some level of apology towards those the cat has inconvenienced.

Yes, no doubt you would if you came out of the same mould as that snidey little toad. Good luck with getting a witness to back you up though as he definitely wouldn't and he's got such a list against him logged with the police that they probably wouldn't bother coming out.
LemonSwan · 05/08/2021 21:36

Water will solve this issue quickly

I have a very simple technique for you (which as a previous cat owner, I actually wouldn't mind if other people had used this on my cat).

Get a watergun. It just needs to be able to spray quite a long distance, so try to get a good one. You don't have to get the cat directly. Cats hate water so much you will only have to spray the air above the cat so that it rains on them in order to get them to move pronto!!

toomanyplants · 05/08/2021 22:11

I genuinely hope simba has spent the last few hours sharpening its claws wolverine style, you attempt to throw a bucket of water over her, but forgot that a window was down, it misses simba completely, she strolls off the precious car and shits in your plant pots. #teamsimba

Make sure to keep it safely in your unpacked boxes ;)

Plot twist - simba actually WORKS at the hand car wash, by standing on a person's shoulders inside an oversized trench coat, and is indeed scratching OPs car whilst pretending to be innocently sponging. #teamsimba

Daytona grey - so you have an Audi :) DH works for them :) says the insurance won't cover the scratches, it's for things like paint defects such as blemishes in the paint work etc. He thought they stopped selling that "extra insurance" a long time ago and now just focus on the alloy protection, but to quote him "what do I know? I'm just the senior vehicle technician".

Hope you get it sorted!

ReginaaPhalange · 05/08/2021 23:09
  • Out of interest - how do you wash your cars? Take to the hand car wash*

I bet you it's the brushes that are being used! I wrecked a panel on a old car cause there was a stone wedged in the brush which I never saw.

Thanks...that's a bummer, was hoping the insurance covers this. My car booked for next week, so will find out how much it costs. DH friend said the paint may be the expensive bit as need to colour match etc...

Haha...my DH is the same, he may just be telling me it's covered to stop me going on about it.

Both Audis, A5 and Q7..hopefully it is covered or else may cost a bit Hmm

ReginaaPhalange · 05/08/2021 23:27

@Helpme20 nice! Our Audi is the Q5 in white! Love driving it!

My advice to you would be to stick to the dealer if having the paint work repaired, please don't go elsewhere as they won't have the official paint codes to create the exact shade. Plus you usually find the dealers will have a warranty for any work carried out.
