What age did you meet the love of your life?

I’m 33, had three long term relationships, but never been married or had kids. I would love nothing more than to settle down and find my ‘person’. I’m just out of a relationship where I got very hurt, and I’m taking a lot of time to focus on me and be on my own. But at 33, everyone around me is settling down, buying houses (I already own my own), getting engaged, marrying, announcing pregnancies. I just don’t think it will ever happen for me. I would be lying if I said seeing all this whilst I feel so shit isn’t making me envious, because it is.

What age did you all meet your ‘person’ and settle down? I know I’m only 33 but with everything I’ve gone through in my life I feel about 50.

  1. I was out in Auckland on a working visa and having a whole lot of fun. Determined to be free and single I would tell everyone I met, and very loudly, I didn't want to get involved in a long-distance relationship. Then late one night my Scottish friend and I drifted into a house party of a friend of a friend. We were a little loud and tipsy. Then this man came sidling up to me and introduced himself. It sounds cheesy but honestly, the rest of the room just disappeared for me, we talked for the rest of the night and into the early hours of next morning. Next day my kiwi friend is squealing down the phone because he'd asked for my number. We saw each other a couple of times before he left for Sydney the following week. The house party was infact his leaving party. To cut a long story short, we just knew at the time. It seemed so right for both of us. Eight months later he left Sydney to come and live with me in London. That was in 1999. He's my Kiwi.

19 together 26 years

I wish I had met him maybe at 26-27 and had a few more years of being single first if I could.

I first met my husband end of April 2014, I'd just turned 21 when we met, he was 29. I was a student and he worked full time but we still made it work, and couldn't be happier.
We became a couple 9th may 2014. We decided to start trying for a baby in July 2014, we moved in together in October 2014, I got pregnant in November 2014, we found out I was pregnant 19th December 2014. We got engaged 13th January 2015, and got married 9th April 2015. Baby was due 30th August 2015, was actually born on 5th September 2015.
So we had been together exactly 11 months the day we got married. I know it's very quick, being married and expecting a baby within less than a year of being together, but it worked for us. We had discussed marriage and both agreed it was what we wanted, but we weren't officially engaged. But when we found out I was pregnant we both knew it was important to us to be married before the baby was born, and I didn’t want to be showing if possible, so we made sure we were. It was perfect. Some people might think we only got married because I was pregnant, but that was never the case at all.

I was 22.

Sadly, he died, due to complications of Diabetes.

Coincidentally, I was listening to one of 'our songs' when I saw this thread.

Which sounds very young when I think about it

I think I just got lucky. We actually met briefly when I was 19 I went to meet a friend at the pub, my friend was already there with several people and he was one of them. I liked him right away, but he was in a relationship with someone else at the time. Also I didn't give the best first impression and I distinctly remember thinking he was giving off vibes he wasn't keen on me.

I've since told him off for being so judgey, I like to say to him that he was lucky we met again and he got a second opportunity.

Anyway, we have been together six years now. I had other boyfriends before him that I was in love with, but it was different from the off with my partner.

I don't think 33 is too late. If you're worried about kids look into egg freezing, take the pressure off. I know that sounds a bit dramatic but it's pretty accessible nowadays and not as expensive as you would imagine, if I hadn't have met my partner it's something I'd have done. Don't feel like your on a clock at 33... you're young not some old lady.

  1. He's 2 years younger.

Got together at 17 / 15, married 5 years later.

Still together, both now late 50s.

I was 30 he was 38. Both relatively recently out of serious relationships with lovely people who we couldn't marry because they "just weren't quite right". 14 years later we are very happily married with two children and every day he is still the best decision I ever made.

firsttimeoptimist · 14/04/2021 23:21

I think the definition of LOYL is that person that you would never regret. Our relationship has been tested by circumstances several times (think jobs that involve travel/family illness etc). But after a week/a month/a year/a decade, I would never regret the time we spent together... one "circumstance" happened when I was 35 and I had a conversation with a friend who was concerned that by waiting to be together I "was giving up my best years" and I had the epiphany that it would never be time "wasted" on the relationship and that however long we were together 5/10/50 years would never be enough!

Loved reading everyone’s replies. Just goes to show there is no such thing as too young/old, or even that it has to be one person.

For me, I met the “love of my life” at 18. Then again at 26, and luckily again at 41. Each time it has felt like “the one”, except I think it should be “the one for right now” as you should live in the moment.

I can honestly say I have loved with all my heart three times, and each time I was loved just as much back. Should current love ever come to an end, then I am very much looking forward to number four, as it’s been bigger and better every time!

  1. Got together at 24. Married at 27.

I adore him. He was there all along and I never knew.

Moneypenny007 · 15/04/2021 12:20

Started seeing my dh at 17, he was 20. I got pregnant a few years later and we stayed together. It's since we got married I realised how lucky I am.
I often wonder if we hadnt ds1 would we have stayed together. Dh insists we would have.... me I'm not convinced! But he is brilliant!
