Why is my type 'tory'?

I come from a very normal family. Both my parents are teachers. Worked hard at school and ended up going to a very prestigious university, followed my a grad job in Investment Banking.

Now I've decided after one long term bf, and a few short flings, to try and find another partner. Why is it though, that my 'type' always seems to be 'tory' or rich. Like without even considering financial situations, the guys I am attracted to are the type who go skiing/went to boarding school etc. Can anyone explain this? Am I just a secret gold digger?

Does it matter? If you're attracted to rich men, so long as a rich man is attracted to you - you're laughing!
And even Tories are allowed love!

Sway19 · 29/12/2020 17:00

@katy1213 great reply to a ridiculous thread

LubaLuca · 29/12/2020 17:04

I believe it's a treatable perversion. Is there a snooker hall or working man's club you could join?

Affor · 29/12/2020 17:09

Are they actually tories or have you just labelled them as such because they ski and have money?

ThirdThoughts · 29/12/2020 17:13

Is this not just a function of where you are meeting the men?

HollowTalk · 29/12/2020 17:17

I would say if you have a job in investment banking, you are meeting with similar types, who are more likely to vote Tory. It's not rocket science.

PinkPlantCase · 29/12/2020 17:17

I guess it depends if you’re ever actually around guys who aren’t as you describe.

I’ve had similar, very normal upbringing but went to a grammar school followed by a top uni. I had to try quite hard to find someone who wasn’t stuck up/doesn’t look down on people.

I also found that a lot of the guys from around where I grew up just weren’t attracted to me.

Ps. DHs family has money but non of them are tories.

YoniAndGuy · 29/12/2020 17:21

Is it floppy hair you like? maybe that's the issue.

Bluesername · 29/12/2020 17:24

Tories, skiers and the privately educated don't have two heads. Many are really nice people.

borageforager · 29/12/2020 17:30

Are they actually Tories?
DH went to boarding school & used to be an investment banker (had left by the time I met him). He’s never voted Tory!

We're apparently evil don't forget
Plussizejumpsuit · 29/12/2020 17:36

Well I suppose somone has to be attracted to that type!Grin

LemonSquirtInTheEyeOfLife · 29/12/2020 17:41

It's ok OP. I am too. Tall slim Tories with dark hair. I never even realise at first! However I married a dyed-in-the-wool Labour voter. (He's still tall though.) You can overcome it, if you really feel you need to!

Not sure about Tory but my type has always been tall, skinny and a bit posh. You can’t help what you like!

audweb · 29/12/2020 17:45

Is it not just where you are that means you meet with people like that? I would have to dig incredibly hard in my city to find Tory, it’s a very SNP, pro independent small city, I don’t think I have ever come across a Tory. I assume there are more in england as that’s who is voting them in?

minipie · 29/12/2020 17:51

Lots of public school type British actors - Hugh Grant, Colin Firth... maybe you imprinted from movies you watched at an impressionable age?

JurassicParkAha · 29/12/2020 18:50

@katy1213 Great response!

I'm confused why this 'type' is Tory. Most of the skiing, boarding school people I know are ardent Lefties/Socialists. OR even why dating Tory when you work in an investment bank is bad....?

It is also incredibly depressing that despite what I assume is a great education, parents who are teachers, and access to a broad range of people in your career, you are still prone to typecasting, and a very narrow view of political persuasions and stereotypes.

ThirdThoughts · 29/12/2020 19:56

😂 Both Glasgow and Dundee have posher areas and Conservative voters!
mindutopia · 29/12/2020 20:01

I suspect it’s because of who you mingle with. My type is most definitely not Tory. But I am also well educated, have very middle class professional friends, and a good career (though not in investment banking!). Thankfully my Dh, while also solidly middle class and also went to private school, is pretty leftist Labour voting just like me. I had to work really hard to find him though. Everyone in my networks for many years had a big City job and quite conservative. You may need to expand your social circles and seek out different people very intentionally if that’s not who you see yourself with.

Nikhedonia · 29/12/2020 20:12

Someone is inevitably going to shag them. Cheers for taking one for the team, OP.

thedancingbear · 29/12/2020 20:19

Tbh it's fairly difficult to reconcile working as an investment banker with anything other than an economically right-wing viewpoint. I can't imagine the cognitive dissonance that would come with claiming to be (presumably) a Labour supporter.

umpteennamechanges · 29/12/2020 21:01

I worked in the City for a decade until very recently and never knowingly dated a Tory, and I live in the Home Counties.

Are you sure it isn't a type of fetish OP?

Is your subconscious seeking them out?

Was your Father one of 'them' and you're seeking a father figure unknowingly?

Keep a look out for the Dark Mark on their forearms, that gives them away

TossCointoYerWitcher · 29/12/2020 23:18

From experience of knowing a few who went there, prvate schooling tends to encourage a certain amount of a self-belief and social skills (whether warranted or not!) Perhaps its these qualities that attract you? Beign Tory and rich prbably comes as a by-product.

EarthSight · 29/12/2020 23:26

I'm sure there are support groups for this.
