Acceptable to dump by text.

Discussing this with a friend. Would you be happy to be dumped by text after being in a relationship for 2 yrs?
I wouldn't I would want to meet face to face. Providing it was safe and practicable.

10 years ago I'd have been hurt. Now I figure it's shit but not more shit than being strung along.

Well it depends doesn’t it? If abuse has been a factor a text is the safest and most sensible option.

Well in the current climate meeting up isn't an option but I still wouldn't want to be dumped by text. A phone call would be much more respectful.

I was dumped by email by someone, so similar. It took me years to forgive him and move on.

Also, you have no way of knowing where that person is when they see the text. I was at work when my little email from hell came in. Part of the reason I was so angry with him after was that I had the humiliation of falling apart in front of all my colleagues.

OK no abuse, its not lock down all seems OK. Two yrs down the line this is just hypothetical. it's not me btw it was just a friend discussing it. I would want to meet face to face and have an explanation. Not so if its just a shot while.

This is why I think it's really mean. Surely you deserved more respect than that. I would say it would be much harder to move on.

After two years, yes it is cruel to dump by text. That's two years out of someone's life and unless they area complete and utter arsehole, they deserve a F2F dumping. Even if it is by video call!

It depends. I have dumped by text but this is because it was clear he did not want to have any kind of meaningful discussion so I didn’t really have much choice

I think it depends on the length and depth of the relationship. I can understand if it’s a short relationship (still not the best) but when you have 2 kids and a house (much like I did) it’s pathetic and downright embarrassing.

Text, no. Phonecall yes: personally I’d prefer someone to break up with me over the phone and offer to meet face to face to discuss it if I wanted than have somebody do it straight face to face out of the blue.

But it would ned to be a proper message. I cant thinking anything more humiliating that being asked to meet somewhere, thinking you were going on a date, to be dumped.

It depends on the situation. I would be more pissed off to drag out to meet someone only to be dumped - I mean, do they need to see my reaction?

I mean, if you live together or see each other all the time then face to face makes sense, but if you're long distance etc where meeting up isn't as simple, then it doesn't.

I also conduct much of my relationship communications by text/messaging, big stuff and small, so I don't see why breaking it off would require a special sort of communication.

I would far rather be dumped via text or mail - anything which allows me to take it in and prepare a dignified response, rather than requiring an immediate answer.

If you've done something to deserve being dumped then you can't complain if someone texts you to tell you to clear off. If they've just decided they want to move on, then a text is cruel.

I finished with my ex by text after 2 years together. I was afraid of him and how he would have reacted face to face. I felt terrible for doing it that way but it was the best for me. I still feel bad 6 months later 😔

You shouldn't feel guilty. He should for making you too scared to be able to do it any other way. That's on him, not you.

In any normal relationship? No. It indicates a serious lack of respect.

In an abusive relationship? Safety first even if that means dumping someone by a text.

I'd just pretend I hadn't seen it and carry on as normal.

I was dumped over the phone after nearly 20 years together, 2 kids, house etc. By that metric, a text after 2 years seems acceptable.

well anytime i have been dumped its not like you have a rationale discussion about it. you can't put any good arguements to keep them to change their mind.

Its not like a work displinary where you can promise to improve in xyz areas and given 6 months to improve and a written warning.

So overall, I'd prefer to be done over the phone and then meet up later if needed. more diginity for me.

(all my break ups were just as i wasn't the one for them and we stayed friends after, so no huge issues beyond wanting different things)
