Do many women have good, enjoyable sex lives after menopause?

I'm in my early 40s, happily married for 20 years, and have always had a relatively high sex drive which is well matched to DH's. However, I've recently had some times when I can happily go quite a bit longer without sex, and I keep reading things which make me nervous about the future. Is this definitely going to change dramatically soon, during peri-menopause and menopause? I supposed I'm just wondering whether any older women have encouraging experiences to share, as I keep reading about how you have to redefine your relationship, etc.. I'm not asking for details and am not a troll/pervert - I've been on here yonks, but am serial NCer.
Thank you!

Glad you concur on the exercise @CoronaIsShit also Maca is good.
maca may has been used to for treat sexual dysfunction in postmenopausal women. Plus, maca has historically been used to boost fertility and sexual desire.

I agree having a drop dead gorgeous man helps.

Lynda07 · 14/04/2020 18:02

Yes, better in some ways because you don't have to worry about contraception and you never have periods.

madcatladyforever · 14/04/2020 18:02

Give it another few years Coronal it gets worse.
(Sorry)

madcatladyforever · 14/04/2020 18:04

I've been on HRT the whole time, made no difference. I don't concur that a sex life is good and healthy. It makes me miserable and I'm much much happier without.

SlayB · 14/04/2020 18:07

www.theregenerativeclinic.co.uk/body-areas/woman/vaginal-atrophy/ There is help out there for ppl so try exercise, supplements first then if no joy then try something like the link.

You are all so young to stop enjoying intimate relationships the benefits of sex range from slashing stress levels to lowering your risk of cancer and heart attacks.

Robin233 · 14/04/2020 18:13

55 here and actually increased - no messy periods or pmt.
I'm the one chasing dh round the bed room now.

WitsEnding · 14/04/2020 18:17

Over 60 - still enjoy good sex, but being locked down doesn't bother me nearly as much as it once would have. I don't put up with bad sex any more.

SlayB · 14/04/2020 18:24

Yay @Robin233 & @WitsEnding

53, went through menopause 3/4 years ago which coincided with leaving my XH. Kids grown up, HRT, returning to exercising 5/6 times a week so I feel good about myself mentally and physically plus a new partner, I’m back to my randy 20s. 😁

However had I stayed in my dead marriage where XH was more interested in wanking off to porn or shagging one of his other women, then probably not! I think circumstance has a large part to play.

SlayB · 14/04/2020 18:58

Brilliant Helena I'm so glad I'm not the only one.

I feel like I'm in my twenties I had a social isolation party the other night house music, drinks, dancing it was fun.

I agree with Violet Fenn - passionate advocate of growing older disgracefully.

Aged 43 to 47ish I felt like a 20 year old again. I understand why, it was last chance to conceive saloon. Then something happened and DH lost it. It was the only reason I put up with him so no point in him anymore. By that I mean never worked; emotionally cruel; down the pub all night; backing out of holidays; gambling away our inheritance enough for a house.

How could I look at him after that?

There was a moment I realised that sex was the only thing that kept us together and because of his behaviour decided it wasn't important anymore and no reason to take HRT.

So, in answer to the OP: it depends but I've give over and it feels free.

Zaphodsotherhead · 14/04/2020 20:29

Is there anyone NOT on HRT and having good sex?

Just curious - I have had symptom free menopause and as I'm single I see no need to take HRT just to feel sexy again. Personally I don't care if I never have sex ever again, and it's a great feeling. I'm not worried about getting older, not being attractive or being invisible to men and I can get on with living my life without all the hang ups and worries of a man.

TigerDater · 14/04/2020 21:23

I’ve never had HRT and am having great sex. I don’t have VA and have never needed lube. Everyone is so different.

Robin233 · 14/04/2020 21:51

No HRT here.
Great sex
Great dh

Musti · 14/04/2020 22:15

@SlayB is there a particular brand you use?

Peri menopausal here and there is no change in my libido and sex is great so far but worried there might be.

HalfDutchGirl · 14/04/2020 22:20

Age 58, menopause years back, never had HRT and still great sex! I definitely plan on growing older very disgracefully!

LikeATipple · 14/04/2020 22:39

I'm 55, have good sex, no dryness, although I do use the little suppositories 3 times a week (but not full blown HRT). Have had more orgasms from PIV since menopause.

DangerCat01 · 15/04/2020 01:44

Madcatlady, you crack me up! I love your posts on most threads.

IdblowJonSnow · 15/04/2020 02:23

Reading with great interest. I'm mid 40s, my libido vanished overnight a couple of years ago. I know I'm in peri-meno, I have so many symptoms. Been to doctors twice but they wont do anything because my cycle is basically the same, apart from a 3 month blip.
Can I insist on having it? What's the best kind to take for dryness, no libido and irritability? I also cant sleep at night and am exhausted all day.

IdblowJonSnow · 15/04/2020 02:25

And my DH is mainly lovely so it's not him!

StarlightLady · 15/04/2020 03:11

40s at the moment with periods heavy all over the place. Certainly sexual feelings are very much as much there as they have ever been.

I still orgasm most days with a vibey and have 1:1 sex 2 or 3 times a week in normal circumstances. My needs for both are very different.

Jocasta2018 · 15/04/2020 04:03

I'm 48, been attempting to get the HRT mix right for over a year & failing miserably. With or without HRT I have incredible acne now - far worse than at puberty... plus the night sweats & hot flushes are stubborn buggers to get rid of!
My libido has also died.
However, I do hope it will return. A female psychologist told me that at times all it takes to boost a female libido is a new lover who strongly desires her. Here's hoping!

WhereIsTheSaladDoris · 15/04/2020 04:58

In america they issue small doses of testosterone legally to boost sex drive which apparently works brilliantly, I friends over there on it.
Over here however, it is not given to menopausal women for no good reason. I said to my doctor my marriage is failing because you will not prescribe this for me and she just said my hands are tied

@madcatladyforever that’s interesting. I am under a consultant for my early menopause diagnosis, and UK based. When I discussed my symptoms, I emphasised the need to get my sex life back. Alongside HRT, he prescribed a tiny dose of testosterone - a small 8ml sachet, and I was to take 1/8 of it - jeeze, I’ve always had good orgasms but on this, they were indescribable! Grin

However, the side affects of taking testosterone were not worth it. It made me very angry, snappy and not a nice person to be around. So I stopped, and went back to just HRT.

My libido is still low, I have more days during the month where I don’t want it than when I do. It’s very difficult in a relationship when you’re not the normal “menopause” age too.

I have found the more I exercise (weight resistance) the more my libido comes back, and that is to do with your body producing testosterone (don’t quote me on that, but it makes sense)

WhereIsTheSaladDoris · 15/04/2020 04:58

Bold fail, sorry 😐

justanotherneighinparadise · 15/04/2020 08:01

I take bio identical HRT (I’m 45) and I get tested every six months and it’s adjusted. At the moment I take testosterone and progesterone. It was meant to have raised my libido but unfortunately it hasn’t. I’ll talk about it when I next have my review. So testosterone isn’t necessarily the magic wand people think it might be.
