How young?

If you were an older woman what's the biggest age gap you would have between you and a man? Or the youngest you would go to?

When l was 48 l had a fling with a 33 year old. Amazing but be careful. I did get hurt. With that kind of age gap it will only ever be about the sex for them. You will be traded in for a younger version once they want to settle down/get serious.

YouKnowILoveYou · 20/05/2019 23:10

I have said this to him but he is adamant it's not like that. Has liked me for quite a while apparently but didn't say anything because of the age gap. So unsure of what to do.

What people say and what they actually do are 2 different things.

I married one 20 years younger. He left after 15 years. Worst heartbreak of my life.

I'd steer clear.

category12 · 21/05/2019 06:06

What's the age gap?

Would you be able to see it as fun and keep it light?

Or, y'know, relationships don't always last and heartbreak is always possible, but we recover, it's not the end of the world. What are you going to regret more, trying or not trying?

feelingsinister · 21/05/2019 06:18

Not that much younger tbh as I don't tend to find younger men attractive but I'm only 40 so as the men age I might change my mind.

Even if it's just for sex I can't ever imagine me seeing anyone more than 5-10 years younger.
Most of my friends disagree.

TescoValueUserName · 21/05/2019 06:43

I'm 39 and i would say youngest would be 32 or 33, but I wouldn't be expecting it to be any more than a fun fling as I doubt a guy in his early 30s would want anything more with an older single mum of 2!

Then again it depends on the guy, if he already had kids then maybe it could be more, plus some guys in their early 30s are more mature and settled than some that are much older!

fairydustandpixies · 21/05/2019 11:33

A friend of mine, years ago, when she was 50, dated another friend's son who was 19 at the time. The friend never found out. I was horrified. I asked how she'd feel if I dated her eldest son who was then also 19 (I was ten years younger than my friend) and she was disgusted!

Always amused me, that.

Needless to say, after she'd been seen with him and people asked why she was out holding her grandson's hand and the novelty for him of shagging her had worn off, it soon ended!

fotheringhay · 21/05/2019 11:44

Fwb 22.5 years younger Blush

I did not take advantage! He's twice my size and had to talk me into it

A very fond memory Smile

fotheringhay · 21/05/2019 11:48

I'd suggest you try not to get too emotionally invested early on OP. Protect your feelings

lifegoes · 21/05/2019 11:57

Personally wouldn't go younger than 33 for me. I'm 42. I find any younger and they only want sex and I find they can often expect a 33yr body.

Although my last OLD was 47 and he was with a 23 year old for 3 years and still together. So who knows 👀

fotheringhay · 21/05/2019 12:00

For a relationship, I think a man would probably have to be late 30s at least and also a father to really 'get' me (I'm early 40s). Not impossible otherwise, but unlikely

Summerorjustmaybe · 21/05/2019 12:07

I am 47, dh is 38. Very well suited.
Exh was 15 years older. Way too much of a gap.
Depends on the person /their family.

RiftGibbon · 21/05/2019 12:09

I don't really know! My DP is 5yrs younger. His older brother is with a woman 6rs his senior, and his younger brother with a woman 4yrs older, so it seems to be a family thing. My grandmother was 3yrs older than my grandfather.
I've a friend whose DP is 12 years her junior and they've been together for 10+ years. She's in her very late 40s. I've also a friend who is with a man 20yrs her senior, and she's also in her late 40s. I don't think anyone asks much if the man is older.

Drogosnextwife · 21/05/2019 12:10

I wouldn't go out with anyone that you could tell just by looking that they were younger.

RiftGibbon · 21/05/2019 12:10

BTW, Tim Minchin is considerably younger than me and I would!

Moralitym1n1 · 21/05/2019 12:31

Depends if you both have kids or not.

Moralitym1n1 · 21/05/2019 12:33

That's assuming for a relationship.

If for sex/casual/fwb - any gap while legal really. Caveat is that one most women can't do fwb, always seems to end with them sobbing into their Chardonnay.

FuriousVexation · 21/05/2019 12:40

I heard a "rule of thumb" is half your age plus 7.

So if you're 40, you shouldn't be knocking boots with anyone under 27.

I'm late 40s and I don't think I could really enjoy spending time out of bed with anyone under 30. It's just the lack of life experience and that makes it hard to hold a conversation up.

I once had a hookup with a gorgeous guy, obviously I realised he was a lot younger than me but post-coital conversation revealed he was the same age as my son. Cringe.

CaptSkippy · 21/05/2019 12:41

I would not consider anyone with more than a 10 year age difference in either direction.

cookiechomper · 21/05/2019 12:45

My man is 3 and a half years younger than me. Not a huge difference but he was only 25 when we got together and I had young kids. Beforehand I'd never consider going any younger at all but glad I did as he surprised me. I'm happily married to him now and am now 31, so not looking to date but if I was I don't think I'd go below 27/28.

Summerorjustmaybe · 21/05/2019 13:51

When I was 36 I had a fling with a 23 yo..
Blush

wishywashy6 · 21/05/2019 14:01

I'm 37 bf is 26, works for us 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pinkmonkeybird · 21/05/2019 14:17

I'm late 40s and my ex was 7 years younger which wasn't that much of a gap. But I would much rather date someone similar in age in the future and not anyone significantly younger.

I have a son in his twenties and it just makes me feel very icky to even contemplate dating someone in his age bracket as some older women do. Urgh. No thanks.

mindutopia · 21/05/2019 15:51

My dh is nearly 7 years younger than me. We met when I was 28 and he was a 21 year old uni student. I don’t think that’s a big age gap really but it was a bit more obvious at that age than it is now. He was a student still living a student life and I was a nearly 30 something professional ready to settle down, get married, have children. But the things that drew us together were stronger obviously than the differences. We’re now in our 30s and have 2 dc and I wouldn’t say the age difference is an issue at all anymore. We’re much more at the same place in life and he’s probably actually the more grounded, mature one of the two of us, tbf. I think it depends a lot on your personality and what you want in life. He was way more together at 21 than I was, so we grew into each other. But I’m 38 now, and definitely wouldn’t be after a 21 year old anymore!

YouKnowILoveYou · 21/05/2019 20:05

The age gap is 11 years, don't want to say exact ages but I'm very early 30s and him very early 20s. Doesn't have children and I don't want anymore but that doesn't matter to him apparently. I've said what if we just have fun but I'm scared of both of us falling. But he makes me so happy at the minute.
