This Is Why Instagram Makes Me Sick

Ok so I get it. Some people are better than others. Scrolling down certain profiles it is obvious that some have a very opulent lifestyles. Photographs of them exploring exotic locations Vegas, Bali and Dubai. Countless new bags, watches, shoes, trainers, vehicles and whatever cosmetic device. Photographs of their very good-looking, status-rich friends and their highly desirable significant other.

It's narcissism, no doubt. It is very much someone telling you "I am better than you" but on a mass level. If they can somehow convey that message to thousands of followers, they will do it.

This is where it gets sick. My issue with Instagram is the feet. There are countless photographs and videos where a person, somewhat bizarrely, seems determined to include their feet. It's usually their feet with some kind of magnificent backdrop, like a landmark, one of their whipped friends or I'm guessing a snapshot of their new boots they uploaded right after burning someone of their outer circle. I actually do not think this is the lustful foot fetish that seems to occupy 90% of the internet, I think it is narcissism, again. The person is saying they're better than you by including a photograph of the lowest part of their body. Where you belong, no doubt.

There have been a few threads about instagram recently. Please can someone explain? Do they get paid to put their private photos in the public domain or do they just want to become famous? Do they not worry that their kids will consider it to be a gross invasion of their privacy once they are old enough to realise that their childhoods have been broadcast to all and sundry, almost like in the Truman Show?

What a delightful Saturday night's journey you've sent me on op.

Whaaaaat now??

Runs off to type #feet into Instagram and see what I can find

CurlyhairedAssassin · 25/08/2018 23:49

Magnussen: you’ve just reminded me, I have I have someone on FB who posts a shot like that every time she goes for a run. Sometimes it’s shot in the dark when it’s raining. Just her, her zany coloured leggings and her trainers on a pavement with the rain plopping down. I am bemused every time.

Purpleisthenewblue1 · 25/08/2018 23:53

I think you have a foot fetish based on your likes.

Magnussen · 25/08/2018 23:56

Oh I've fallen in to the shoe/door fetishises trap!!

We are now posting pics for the fetishing op!!

Anon90 · 26/08/2018 05:00

Errr no. Some of us just love our shoes.get a grip.

AsleepAllDay · 26/08/2018 05:52

I only follow my friends and other people/celebs I want to see on Instagram. Which means I interact with people's unrealistic travel and decor and fitness bullshit a lot less. Try it

RainySeptember · 26/08/2018 06:10

I personally predict that it will be all about the elbows in 2019. It is long overdue. Or chins maybe.

Ha I love this.. I'm currently on holiday I took a boomerang picture of my perfectly manicured shellac coral pink (complete with glitter blush) toes yesterday by our private pool at the villa. The back drop was my two beautiful boys jumping into the pool.

So let's look behind the scenes.. my husband the cheating lying bar steward paid dearly for this holiday. I haven't been abroad for 8 years (because my children both have autism) and it's taken me this long to be brave enough to take them on an airplane.!! It went amazing well btw 🙌

The villa is in a secluded place in the tree top hillside of Portugal (2 hour flight from the U.K. is all I could manage with these two boys). The secluded part means I can strut around topless at the pool dreaming about my tummy tuck - he's paying for but doesn't know it yet.. it will be my wedding anniversary present!

Why did I take that pic.. well why the feck not!! I've had the most horrible year, I still have nightmares!! Is it my real self, yes to a degree it is. The masked version of me and my family.. you want the warts and all so you can all put messages of 'are you ok' and gossip behind the scenes about how sad it is.. hell no!

Suck up that shit and face the world. It's not fake it's me making me feel better and I won't be knocked for that.

I know naught about instagram and feet, but do you really believe that people with lots of possessions are better than the rest of us?

I don't understand why some people slag off social media. It's entirely what you make it, so if you don't like vanity don't follow vain people. I'm on FB, Twitter, and Instagram and never get any of the crap people moan about popping up on my feed because I'm choosy what and who I follow. It's that simple.

prettywhiteguitar · 26/08/2018 09:59

My feed is full of contemporary art, I never see hot dog legs or instamums Grin

Hadalifeonce · 26/08/2018 10:05

The foot thing isn't new............. we have proper photographs of our feet in nice settings in albums.

Thinkingofausername1 · 26/08/2018 11:57

I've deleted my social media apps. It's full of self centred idiots. My view is if they are probably not nice people and don't value what they have to be showing off so much on instagram.

AgentJohnson · 26/08/2018 15:00

If it's narcissistic to upload extracts out of their privileged lives, what do you call giving a crap what these people post? Nice try dressing your inferiority complex as social commentary.

I mainly follow dogs on Instagram though so not sure how prevalent this phenomenon is.
