Why is he in jail?

Complete namechange just in case of links.
A week or so ago ds came home from school and said his best friends dad was going to jail, but he hadn't done anything. It was because a girl had got mad at him. I didnt pry but tried to instill the idea that you dont generally go to jail in this country unless you actually had done something you shouldn't have.
His friend was round on a playdate this week, and his dad is indeed now in jail. Didnt ask for any details when it was mentioned as kid was embarrassed.
My ds and this child have had regular playdates at each other's house.
My q is, what type of offence is he likely to have committed? Im sure i saw him at school after i first heard he was going to jail, so he obv wasn't taken into custody immediately. I (fortunately) have no experience with the system, but the only thing i can think of is possible dv or property damage??
Would you still let your ds play at theirs, not knowing the full story? Im a bit wary tbh.

Given this is Mnet,

The Dad asked a question on AIBU ( possibly relating to nosey school mum). An argument followed (with lots of shameless place marking) and Nosey School Mum resorted to ( the big gun in any MNetter's arsenal) ' Did you mean to be so rude?'.

The crim Dad came back at her with a powerful 'ODFOD' and a Biscuit( low blow!)

Nosey School Mum feeling triggered and anxious called 101 and logged it.

Police had nothing better to do that day so arrested The Dad and through him in jail for 5 years.

This is a true account as I googled 'The Dad v Nosey School Mum'.

OR....... how the feck can a stranger have any idea what another stranger is in prison for!

In my mall town everyone in the school yard would know what he'd done in five minutes with or without a surname.

No one has mentioned remand ! At the time of being actually charged with an offence (which can happen sometime AFTER being arrested) and released either pending investigation (new police bail time limits) or police bail.. THEN at charging , the CPS can request remand (held in custody) if they believe the suspect could interfere with witnesses to the crime.

This happens overnight at the police station then he will go to court in the morning- where a magistrate will decide if the thing he's been accused of is sufficiently serious to warrant keeping him in prison until his trial. (Or there is great concern of witness interference and intimidation).

So he MAY not of done anything. He MAY just be accused of something but entirely innocent. (Although fairy unlikely as the level of evidence a magistrate will require at a custody hearing is quite rightly very high before you can lose your liberty.

Also agree about trivial crimes and prison. This happens after a catalogue of opportunities to deal with an offence in other ways has been avoided/ignored. Prisons simply don't have the space to hold first time shoplifters!

I would be curious too. My DC have twice mentioned crimes in relation to acquaintances and both times they were easy to spot looking at the local paper. Although sometimes the reporting is delayed.

If you are concerned you could always contact the Police to enquire using Sarah’s Law.

Weird that you’re not just looking for info online.

Weird that you hadn't read the reason why I wasn't...
Anyway, just asked DS for surname, it's one with a number of possible spellings, as is the Christian name. Nothing has come up so far.

Some news reports state the road they live in, do you know this?

I have family and friends who have been in prison and parents of dcs friends; who I am happy for my dc to spend time with....drugs, theft, motoring offenses

But 'he is in prison because a girl got mad at him' would not be ok. It sounds like a sexual offense?

Nowhere did I say you needed my permission but think perhaps op would have been back if they had anything to add before your comment 4 months down the line.
