I met him when I was 15, started dating when we were 16. Got married when we were 21. We were engaged for 1 year and a bit. We had a long distance relationship as well.

He was my first and only boyfriend.

sminkypinky · 03/06/2015 21:58

12 years. Met at 17 (DH 21) married at 29, we've now been together a total of 19 years.

peanutnutter · 03/06/2015 22:09

peanutnutter · 03/06/2015 22:10

BolshierAyraStark · 03/06/2015 22:11

9 years together prior to marriage, that was 8 years ago so together 17 in total-so far...

MrsTrelis · 03/06/2015 22:13

Moved in together after a year, living together four years, still not married or even engaged! There's no real rush for us, we have other priorities right now!

WeAllHaveWings · 03/06/2015 22:13

Moved in together after 3 years, married after 10 years, been married 12 years.

elQuintoConyo · 03/06/2015 22:14

Met at 23, moved in together at 28, married at 35, child at 36. Wanted to be sure Wink

We have been together nearly 17 years. That includes 1 year long-distance, different countries actually, and living in 3 different countries togetger. It's been a blast! Wedding was great, would live to do the whole thing all over again.

Skiptonlass · 04/06/2015 09:08

Ahhhh... Chick. I thought I recognised the tone of your question :)

Don't ever get pressured into marriage. Marriage is a big deal- it's not to be entered into lightly. I was engaged in my late twenties and I called it off. The guy was lovely but we just weren't right for each other and we grew apart.

Everyone is different and everyone has a different story, but most happy marriages contain love but also respect. Respect isn't being 'treated like a princess' don't confuse it with that - it's being treated as an equal.

CandyAppleFudge · 04/06/2015 09:12

Met when I was 14 dh(16) had a kid at 18 got married at 19.
5 years

spiffysquiffyspiggy · 04/06/2015 09:19

We were together for 9 years and had 3 children when we got married. Only married him because we got our pension statements though and realised that we each had fairly big pensions that would only pay our to a spouse if one of us died. Wedding was us, children witnesses and their partners.

I did move in him with him immediately though. (went back to his on a Friday night, left on the Sunday, went back on the tues and never left)

littleostrich · 04/06/2015 09:36

We met in early 2010, got engaged at the end of 2011, and married in the summer of 2013.

Archer26 · 04/06/2015 10:03

8 years, lived together for 4 years before that. Been married a year now.

Purpledahlia88 · 04/06/2015 10:34

Moved in together within weeks, not married or engaged yet (it's been a year)

thecolourpink · 04/06/2015 11:29

Married my dh 5 months after meeting! Still happily married 8 years later.

But it all depends on your situation and circumstances. We did what was right for US. Everybody is unique and what's right for one won't be right for another.

Listen to your gut feeling. That's how I knew.

@Skiptonlass

Thanks for the insights... :)

As more I spend time on the MN the more I learn ;)

A few weeks shy of ten years together before we got married.

No DC in common, I didn't see any reason to get married. He was keen from a romantic point of view. I remembered my mother as having lost her identify, having subsumed it in children and house. Wasn't going to let that happen to me.

We bought a house together, made wills in each others favour. Some ten years later, with home counties house price rises, I realised that either of us would have a struggle to raise the inheritance tax required stay in the house, if/when the first one died.

We had been thinking of a party to celebrate ten years, booked the registrar to turn it into a wedding at quite late in the day.

If i had known how well it would go, would have married years earlier. Sigh.

Dp now, been together over 8 yrs, engaged, but no hurry to marry yet!|""

5446 · 04/06/2015 12:34

Met 5.5 years ago, moved in after 2.5 years.

Absolutely no hurry for us to get engaged/married. I was only 20 when we met and still feel too young to do the whole marriage thing.

DP's brother has just got engaged after being with his DP for 9 years so can imagine we will be similar Grin

silverstar1 · 04/06/2015 12:40

Moved into together after 6 months, and married 3 years later, been married for just over 9 months!

CheersMedea · 04/06/2015 12:42

Didn't live together before we got married but we'd bought our home sort of concurrently with the wedding.

This was a big thing for me because apparently statistically if couples live together for an extended period before marriage they are far more likely to get divorced. Looking back I was irrationally obsessed with this fear. And also I'd seen too many women live together with their partner, hanging for a promised engagement that never came and then the man left and immediately married someone else. I didn't want to be the woman left high and dry.

So I had an absolute cast iron rule of no living together before marriage.

tindel · 04/06/2015 12:47

We were friends for 4 years beforehand, including living together for 9 months in a student house as part of a larger group. Got together a few months after we moved out, moved in together about 4.5 years later, bought a house 4 years after that, got married last year. We'd been together 11 years before we got married.

BestIsWest · 04/06/2015 12:54

2.5 years. Been together 30 years now. Blimey.
