I think he's got me a bread maker for Christmas...

I wasn't supposed to see anything and I don't know for sure, but it definitely looks like some kind of kitchen appliance. It makes me feel quite sick at the thought... We've only been together a couple of years and until now all his gifts have been very romantic (jewelry, flowers, customized cards...). What on earth do I do?!

I want a bread maker forchristmas! For my birthday my dp got me an electric toothbrush. He does but me little spontaneous romantic presents throughout the year though, like flowers if I have had some good news etc, so I let him off.

honeybeeridiculous · 15/12/2013 07:42

Id be glad he had thought of something himself.i have to write a list for my DH as he cant seem to think for himself Smile

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 15/12/2013 07:48

I have done this to dh before. I bought it for him as I wanted it. Turned out I hated doing it. He loved it.

Men can bake too you know. It don't just rise for a woman....

derektheladyhamster · 15/12/2013 07:54

I'm getting a slow cooker - one you can use on the hob too! I'm very excited. I have a standard one, but I hate transferring stuff from a saucepan to the crock pot.

Practical gifts all the way here Grin

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 15/12/2013 07:56

I also want a slow cooker! Grin

fiftyandfab · 15/12/2013 07:56

I once got 2 bottles of aftershave from my DH! He knew I liked Cerruti....he just didn't bother to check fragrance gender in Debenhams!!

BalloonSlayer · 15/12/2013 07:56

Why don't you just say, with a hug and a big smile:

"Sorry, I know I wasn't supposed to see but I did get a glimpse . . . you haven't got me a breadmaker for Christmas have you? Because I'm one of those people who get really offended if they are bought a kitchen appliance for a Christmas present. I thought you knew that about me already but if you didn't, well I'm tellin' you now."

ZenNudist · 15/12/2013 07:57

I asked for car seat covers,

My list also included mulberry handbag Grin

You make it plain early on that a gift for the house is not a gift for you, bring it into the conversation in a general way. I was brought up like that and was aware from at least 5yrs that my mother would have been horrified to have a kitchen appliance. However my MIL liked practical gifts, so you have to make it plain which sort you are.

ThePinkOcelot · 15/12/2013 08:02

You feel sick?! Really?! Grow up!!

herladyship · 15/12/2013 08:02

I bought DH a paella pan last year Grin he loved it & now we usually have paella night once a week where he cooks

Tapiocapearl · 15/12/2013 08:03

It's a gift for the house, not yourself.

Saying that Xmas always tends to be an excuse to buy things we need in the house - so DIY stuff and house stuff seems ok because we are so skint.

Hulababy · 15/12/2013 08:04

I like cooking stuff for presents. I often have them in my wish list. I know I'm def getting something of that inkling this year from my brother and from my parents.
But my dh, and family, know me. They know me well enough to realise these are things I like to receive.

I'm not into perfume and things like that for presents from dh much though. I get perfume anyway during the year. I definitely wouldn't want underwear type stuff. He has it me bags and jewellery in the past - but only special Ones. He knows I'm not into having and changing them often. He'd love to get me an expensive watch but knows it's not really me and I'd rarely wear it, so wouldn't. He knows me. He buys me stuff I am interested in - camera lens if top of my wish list this year so suspect he will have got me a fancy one of them - perfect. Maybe not romantic (???) but more thought gone into what I actually want.

However if he knows you're not into cooking and wouldn't want/use this kind of thing - then no, not thoughtful.

SatinSandals · 15/12/2013 08:04

I don't think that you should 'grow up' - who wants to go from lover to housekeeper? Hmm

SatinSandals · 15/12/2013 08:05

I would ask him why he has bought a present for himself as he will be the one using it!

I would love a breadmaker for Christmas! Last year DH got me a red food mixer and I was delighted! The year before he got me an apron with chickens all over it (now fondly referred to as my "cock apron") which I also loved. I think I was a 1950s housewife in a prior life.

Gileswithachainsaw · 15/12/2013 08:19

I don't see an issue tbh. I'd much rather receive something like that which I would use and get some use and enjoyment out of than jewelry that sits around in a box until you have somewhere to wear it and then no one even noticed if you do.

Do people really think it's a "get In the kitchen" hint?

Isn't clothes it jewellery then "looking pretty" hint on the same note.

Hmm, cliche unimaginative "shiny shit" . Not much better tbh IMO.

strawberrypenguin · 15/12/2013 08:26

Sounds like a good present to me! I don't have one but they look great. Then again my favourite present last year was a posh kettle from DH! I've used it several times a day, every day since and I love it.

Branleuse · 15/12/2013 08:28

Buy yourself a breadmaker, then he'll take his one back

He got me an electric potato peeler as an 'ironic' pushing present. Yes, I was a bit hormonal...but I actually cried, so I feel your pain!
