Just that for now

It's a means of sending pictures that automatically delete after about 10 seconds. Google snap chat for a more detailed explanation.

OnTheBottomWithAWomansWeekly · 21/07/2013 01:04

DD (16) uses it like texting - every message has a photo with it.

She's sent thousands since she got the (free) app.

So if you see a teenager pulling a funny face & taking a selfie, that's what they're doing.

One advantage is that they stop doing the duck face in all their photos!

MsWinnieBaygo · 21/07/2013 01:16

It's a text messaging and photo/video sharing app where the messages/pics automatically delete themselves 10 seconds after the person has read them so no one else can see them.

amessageforyouYoni · 21/07/2013 09:31

Its a bit dodgy. Used by teens and youngsters for sexting a LOT (work with young people - this is the new 'problematic' app).

Supposedly pictures automatically delete, but its easy to take a screenshot if you have a smart phone. Snapchat say they will 'inform' you if someone saves a pic you have sent, but thats all they do.

Wise to remember that no image you send is EVER 'safe'. Once you share, its always there.

deepfriedsage · 21/07/2013 09:36

Lots of daft pictures. I was really annoyed when they were takindgaft pictures of me and wetting themselves laughing. When they explained they delete quickly, I pulled a few faces and joined in.

ruddynorah · 21/07/2013 09:39

You can send photos and they disappear after however many seconds you set it for. You can also sketch over the photo so draw glasses on or create scenes or whatever. Can be very funny. And you can add a short line of text.

Plus, you could use it to send naked photos that you don't want hanging around forever. If the recipient takes a screen shot of your photo you get a warning message back.

EllaFitzgerald · 21/07/2013 10:03

I believe that there's currently a website full of Snapchat pictures of half naked girls which they wrongly believed would vanish into the ether, and now those pics are out there forever.

therewearethen · 21/07/2013 11:37

Thanks guys, DP has it and certainly isn't a teenager Hmm

OP posts:
alphacourse · 21/07/2013 12:15

Does he use it do you think? Are you suspicious?

VitoCorleone · 21/07/2013 12:18

Do you think he is using it inappropriatly?

Trills · 21/07/2013 12:19

I have it too.

As does DP.

I took a picture of our chilli plant to show that the first chilli had gone red.

A friend sent me a picture of her new nail varnish.

You only use it to message people whose phone numbers you have (who he could already have been sending naked pictures to if he wanted).

Maybe someone said to him "hey, try this app", and he downloaded it, used it once, and decided that he wasn't interested.

Unless you have other reasons to suspect that he is up to something, simply owning the app doesn't indicate anything.

therewearethen · 21/07/2013 13:08

I saw it on there a few wks back and and had a look but didn't really understand how it worked but as friends there were a few sus names with sex etc in them so I asked him if it was just people he knew or randoms and he said both. apparently he's sent a photo of his eye and only received photo's of dogs doing stupid things, not sure if I believe him tbh, it's just been on my mind since I found it. sorry on phone

OP posts:
ImperialBlether · 21/07/2013 13:25

A photo of his eye... Just why would he do that?

Where did the randoms come from, did he say? They would have to have his phone number.

kalidanger · 21/07/2013 13:33

Snapchat is what someone who wants to send pictures of their cock to randoms would use.

ImperialBlether · 21/07/2013 13:43

Yes and vice versa.

therewearethen · 21/07/2013 13:53

Confused so you definitely have to give your phone number out?

OP posts:
kalidanger · 21/07/2013 13:57

iPhone/Android Messenger = for sending texts, and pics that you pay for (MMS are billed outside of SMS usage)
WhatsApp = for sending texts and pics for free. Uses the internet instead of billed usage
SnapChat = for sexting

There must be more going on, OP?

kalidanger · 21/07/2013 14:03

so you definitely have to give your phone number out?

Yes Sad It's an app for texting and sending pics. You need the get the contacts in exactly the same way as usual "Gimme your number, yo" but, actually, the person who you are texting can choose what name shows up, I think.

Like, I'd give you my number and when you put it into the app it'll show as whatever name I'd chosen 'KaliSeXXXy69' for example [vom] It's on the internet so different to comtacts in the phone that you would name yourself.

He's counting on your ignorance of how it works. Pictures of dogs??

kalidanger · 21/07/2013 14:03

OP, get SnapChat and use it with him. Sending him a picture of a fucking cat. Familiarise yourself with it.

ShoutyCrackers · 21/07/2013 14:34

Random people can snap chat you - they don't have to have your number . I often get stupid ones from pouty half naked girls with user names like ' cherrypiesexy ' .

I use it for daft stuff with work pals

kalidanger · 21/07/2013 14:40

Oh god, I knew I'd posted too much Sad

arsenaltilidie · 21/07/2013 14:47

Snapchat can be used for texting just as Whatsapp can be used for sexting.
It's most likely random pictures and the fad seems to have died down.

Ahhhcrap · 21/07/2013 14:49

You have to either send a friend request, or receive one, which involves giving your number.

Get it on your phone and friend request him... You get 'points' each time you send a message or photo against each friend. Which means, once your friends you'll be able to see who he talks to most.

I always thought it was a dodgy app as why would you only want to view a photo for 10 seconds Shock then delete it...

therewearethen · 21/07/2013 15:39

I've got it on ipad, still not entirely sure how it works and I haven't put my number in. Good idea Ahhcrap, but obviously he'll know it's me if its my number and know I'm fishing!?

When I first googled what it was I thought oh well that's clearly to send rude photo's isn't it!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy if there has been exchanges but giving your number out (if that's what you have to do) doesn't sit comfortably with me.
