Had really bad pain in my teeth. Went to dentist today and he said I needed a crown £654!!!!!

Husband is furious! I told him its not really my fault. Sometimes I forget to brush my teeth (bad I know)

Then he said 'your teeth are rotten and you smell'

He said I smell because I don't shower every day- I don't think I need to, plus hair doesn't need to be washed every day.

I'm really upset.

Anyone?

So if you don't clean your teeth every day and have rotten stinking teeth and breath, then who's fault is it ?

Perhaps you need to take heed and look after your personal care more.

People are being a bit (a lot) mean. Why do you not look after yourself, which is how I see washing and brushing my teeth? Are you depressed, anxious, don't care? Did your family wash and brush their teeth when you were a child? Does your DH normally talk to you like that, or has he raised this issue before?

I would worry about my DH and be upset if he didn't brush his teeth and shower every day. Is your DH worried and frustrated or mean and angry?

To be very honest, I'd be upset and offended if someone who didn't regularly clean their teeth and shower expected to share my bed and be intimate with me, I'd find it really rude

Not brushing your teeth is possibly the most expensive luxury you have allowed yourself in your life!

Do you not know that you need to brush your teeth to avoid cavities and a reeking bad breath? How come you forget about brushing your teeth?

Do you mean you forget to brush twice a day? Or forget full stop? I sometimes collapse into bed without brushing but always brush in the morning. Your husband could have been a bit more tactful but um, perhaps you do smell? I agree you don't have to wash your hair everyday, I only do mine 2-3 times a week as its long and thick and a bloody nuisance to style, batiste is good for the day before a wash, but I think everyone should shower/ wash everyday, it can only take 5 mins and doesn't do you any harm. If your odour is making your husband uncomfortable, would it hurt you to shower each day?

£654 is alot for a crown though - I'm surprised you didn't get a lecture off the dentist - I've had a huge lecture everytime I've been in recently because I only drink coke and I let the kids eat sweets - I do however clean my teeth twice a day, use mouthwash before so as not to rinse the toothpaste away, don't use water (also so the toothpaste doesn't get washed away), use an electric toothbrush, chew dental gum, drink through a straw and don't brush for half an hour before or after eating. I still get cavities and I still had to have a crown but it cost £200 on the NHS. Now have to give the kids their sweets after the evening meal because it's then classed as a dessert and they're only meant to drink water or milk - one does only drink water but the other two like the flavoured spring water and the fizzy waters. You MUST clean your teeth - it's too painful and expensive not to. I'm sure you wash every day but if not then I think you should otherwise your husband will feel justified in talking to you that way which will damage your relationship. Doesn't have to mean a shower although if you jump in every morning for 5 minutes you soon get used to sorting yourself out quite quickly.

You only drink coke? No wonder your dentist is lecturing you.

Yeah I have one can a day - I don't consider it too much - and I'm taking care of my teeth as the dentist recommended - I figure one can is equivalent to people who drink lots and lots of tea or cofee with sugar in all day long. Once it's been mentioned by the dentist though there's no point in going over and over it - they've done their job - then they probably go home and drink whatever they want - alcohol or something else with a lot of sugar in - Even eating fruit gets you a lecture from the dentist because of the sugar/acid content but seriously - who is going to give up fruit/tea/coffee????

You said you only drink Coke... Does that mean you only have one drink per day? Or, do you drink one Coke and other drinks as well? I don't drink anything with sugar in it because I like to eat my calories!

Get yourself to a good NHS dentist. No need to fork out all that money on a crown.

yep - just the one drink a day mostly - might go crack open a couple of bottles of wine now though - haven't had alcohol for years but MN does that to people;-)

calories don't worry me - I'll only worry if I go above 9 stone

How can your body handle having one can of a drink that is so sugary that it makes other people more thirsty rather than less. Dont you drink water?

I'd be really worried about your health with only one drink per day and that full of sugar and caffeine. Do you ever exercise and sweat? Is your pee really strong? Are you constipated?

I am not going to lecture you on your choice of drink at all, just worried that you get dehydrated on only 330 ml to drink per day!

OP - have a think...

Has your partner been dropping gentle hints over a period of time about your personal hygiene, or lack of?

Does he avoid kissing/cuddling/being close to you?

By your own admittance you don't take care if yourself as you should, so I've no doubt that you're a bit whiffy.

It could be that a dentist bill for over £600 has just caused your DH to snap and although I don't like exactly what he said and the way he said it I think you need to take notice and do something about it.

well we've gone really off topic and I feel I've totally hijacked a thread here! I don't think I'm dehydrated otherwise I would drink more and I'm 40 so it can't be all that bad if I've lasted this long. Not constipated but thanks for asking - pee also isn't really strong but then that's because despite not drinking much still pee on a regular basis - downside of coke is probably the fact I do pee more because it irritates the bladder but that's the caffeine so coffee drinkers probably also suffer. Just put up with it - actually I don't just drink coke - sometimes I switch to Sprite but I am basically a fizzy drink junkie. It's my one vice and I have tried to give it up but really can't - give in every time - the longest I lasted was about 3 weeks I think.

But going back to the thread - anyone else think that £654 is rather excessive for a crown?? Or is that private? I swear I've never paid more than £200 for the crown I had and the bridge but it was on the NHS

Of course that's private. I was quoted a similar figure last year when I had a private check up. I found a good NHS one soon after and my treatment was very reasonable.
