Living with an alcoholic

I'm wondering if there are other people out there who live with an alcoholic and could do with some support?

My partner is a "functioning" alcoholic in as much that he still manages to go to work most days, and doesn't drink during the daytime. He does however drink enormous amounts every evening and it is getting harder and harder for me to deal with. I am 33 weeks pregnant with our first child and I am so scared of bringing our baby up with an alcoholic father. I try to talk to him about quitting but he refuses to discuss the subject.

Anyone else in a similar situation?

OP, I hope you are okay and come back to this thread. Once you listen to the advice you will see that the intent is to support, yet be realistic too.

I would like to ask this: what action is your partner planning to take, and when is he planning to do it?

If it is just a vague one day in the future thing, then you have trouble. If he won't talk about it you have trouble. If he says 'next week' and then 'next week' keeps moving, you have a problem.

You need to see him act. You need to see him do something.

Nothing will change unless he acts.

Shagmundfreud makes a very good point.

For example, I am a big fan of co-sleeping, but it is dangerous for people who have had a drink or are heavy sleepers.

It is particularly dangerous if such a person falls asleep on a chair or a sofa holding a baby. When people talk about the risks of co-sleeping, it is usually in a situation like this.
