Ok so I'm only half way through the first book but I really need to get this off my chest. This book is making me so angry. It's being branded as "mummy porn" and no one is picking up on the fact he is completely manipulating her and being completely abusive!! All this "stay away from me" blowing hot and cold that's a manipulation tactic and the fact that he isn't willing to have a normal relationship with her says he really doesn't give a fuck about her - despite what he says.

I know it's only a piece of fiction but the fact that everywhere I turn people are going crazy for him saying how they miss him and want someone like him . I was in an abusive relationship for about a year when I was 17 trust me it's is NOT FUN to be with someone like Christian Grey .

Sorry for another 50 shades thread

I was also in an abusive relationship, but I'm not reading this that way at all. Not yet anyway, kindle says I'm 44% through

mummytime · 06/07/2012 10:19

You don't have to read it.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/07/2012 10:19

It's fantasy. Some women fantasise about being in a relationship like this. It does not mean women would want/accept a RL relationship like this.

That is the whole point of fiction, to transport you into a different world where RL conventions don't necessarily apply.

WillowTheWitch · 06/07/2012 10:24

Haha true mummytime I've tried not to read it but it's hard now that I've started to not want to know what happensGrin

I want a Mr Grey; not for the manipulative side of it, but for the hot sex.

KatherineKavanagh · 06/07/2012 10:30

I'm finding it quite tame so far

In my head Christian looks like David beckham

Come off it, he's obviously Matt Bomer Wink

I've read all 3 books, I liked 'em. Hasn't made me crave an 'abusive and controlling' relationship in real life one bit. I took it for what it was, nothing more. The dynamics of my relationship certainly haven't changed since reading the books, nor will they. I'm hoping that most people reading it aren't influenced by it, other than to move away from pure vanilla and add some chocolate chips Wink

curiositykitten · 06/07/2012 10:55

In my head, for the first book he was Ryan Phillippe. As it progressed, the image changed a bit. Not sure who into, but yes, Matt Bomer would be rather close I think.

Kaluki · 06/07/2012 10:58

If you can relate it to an abusive relationship you have had in the past then its best to put the book down - it isn't going to be nice reading.
For me it is just fiction. Not the best written book I've read by a long shot and the plot is a bit cheesy at times but I love the naughty fantasy side of it.
I don't want to be whipped or tied up in RL but its great to read about.
I am slightly worried about myself though because I get bored with all the mushy lovey stuff and start wishing he would get her into the red room and get on with it!

Kaluki · 06/07/2012 11:00

OMG Matt Bomer!! I don't know who he is but that is exactly as I imagined CG in my head.

tiredemma · 06/07/2012 11:00

Ive never read so much shit in all my adult life. And I've read a lot of Martina Cole novels.

utter tosh. and boring as hell.

DozyDuck · 06/07/2012 11:02

It's starts off like that... I don't want to spoil the ending.

HotDAMNlifeisgood · 06/07/2012 11:08

I'm with you Willow

But creepy stalky controlling dudes have always been help up as the stuff of romantic fantasy - cf. Twilight.

solidgoldbrass · 06/07/2012 11:28

I despise the books because they give both BDSM and erotic fiction a bad name. They are utter rubbish written by a moron who probably hasn't had any more exciting sex than her target readership given the amount of stuff she apparently gets wrong.

BelieveInPink · 06/07/2012 11:28

Leave off. CLEARLY he is Robert Downey Jr.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/07/2012 11:36

HotDAMN 50 shades is Twilight, or at least Twilght fan fic. Christian is Edward, and Ana is Bella I didn't know this til I read it on MN. I went and bought the twilight books and now I am hooked on those too

MaisyMooCow · 06/07/2012 11:44

OP, I was exactly like you whilst I was reading the books. I wanted her to stand up to him and tell him where to go. I'm glad I stuck with it though because I wanted to know what happened to the relationship. I got a bit bored of some of the sex scenes so skimmed quickly though them.

I had lots of questions whilst reading the books but am glad to say every one of them was answered by the time I'd finished.

izzyizin · 06/07/2012 11:50

I acquired a Twilight book along with numerous novels in a raid on my local charity shop.

I thought it was puerile a substandard Point Horror book for teenagers. If this is what passes for adult fiction these days, dumbing down has taken its toll.

KirstyWirsty · 06/07/2012 13:05

I think it is a modern Mills and Boons .. she´s a virgin, he´s moody .. they come at the same time ... the sex scenes are reptitive and boring

Xlibris does some decent erotic fiction .. look it up on Amazon and don´t waste time with this tosh :)

MillyMack · 06/07/2012 13:08

Its utter shite. Badly written, juvenile and creepy...the fact she is a virgin and he is a billionaire stalker made me feel quite ill at points.

The BDSM element was also incredibly vanilla, imo. They talked about it a lot, but the actual sex was just straight forward wham bam thank you mam and didnt sound remotely satisfying for anyone but a creepy control freak and his immature, inexperienced gymslip girlfriend.

There is far better erotica out there, ladies Grin

Totally agree Willow, it doesn't get any better either.

WillowTheWitch · 06/07/2012 16:37

Ok so do u keep reading or give it up? One the one hand I'm desperate to see what happens, but on the other hand I cant imagine there is anything that will make me sympathise with him. He clearly enjoyed the "vanilla" sex they had on the first night, so why then not try and see if he could have a normal relationship. Also, as soon as he thinks she wants out he's right at her door manipulating her into wanting him again.

He tells her they either have a Dom/sub relationship or no relationship at all !!!! Someone who really loves another would never make that kind of ultimatum IMO. If Ana wasn't being manipulated she would have said there and then "well if that's the way you feel you can't like me that much then" and walked away.

I think I need to knowAngryGrinConfused
