If you were dating - would you "avoid" certain professions?

I'm trying the online dating thing and have just got talking to a 6ft 4in bouncer and weights trainer.

Seems a nice bloke but I read "into the darkest corner" and .... well anyone that's read it will know what I'm on about.

I won't write him off for that alone but is it reasonable to be "wary" of certain professions when dating or is it terribly judgemental?

Mighty I am going to marry my cats. How about us finding a vet to officiate and having a double ceremony. You bring the nuts and I'll bring the tins!! I'm with you on dating. Blearggggggh! Sex yes, dating no - and on my terms.

MightyNice · 03/04/2012 15:43

I might have to be a bit polygamous and marry my cats too, and my dog, and the pony and ferret and the dead fish in the biorb - our ceremony would be the best ever :)

garlicbutter · 03/04/2012 15:56

I'm afraid I'd avoid policemen, too, and would think twice about soldiers and anyone else whose work includes familiarity with violence - so prison officers and bouncers, too. This is due to personal experience - obviously there are plenty of people whose values are not interwoven with their work, but I prefer to eliminate that particular risk.

sillymillyb · 03/04/2012 15:59

Another vote against dating a copper here... Never again! Also, less commen but actors. I used to live with a load who are in west end plays. Everyone is shagging each other and the motto "what goes on tour stays on tour" is thrown about very liberally!

garlicbutter · 03/04/2012 16:01

Oh, yeah, and I'm prejudiced against top doctors/surgeons, financiers, estate agents, airline pilots AND social workers for reasons outlined by others!

Good thing I'm not dating, eh Grin

Cat says she won't marry me. She wants to keep her options open ...

garlicbutter · 03/04/2012 16:02

Oh, oh, that one too, milly! Same reason.

ChickenSkin · 03/04/2012 16:04

Well this has made for some interesting reading! I think we can firmly say police officers are out!

I'm going for a poo but will catch up with the thread properly later :-)

They say there is a personality type that is drawn into the police force. A personality type which should be avoided. I dated an ex-copper for a few months once. Only fucker who ever messed with my mind.

Saying that, one of the nicest people I know is a police officer so I would hate to tar them all with the same brush. Just percentages, innit.

mummmsy · 03/04/2012 16:19

my goodness sweetie of course! You've just got to make sure he's in the right income bracket Wink

er no! all about the person Grin

Mrbojangles1 · 03/04/2012 16:22

Yes, any one who is a dj, bouncer or people who are students I am mid thirties to old for a frigging student

Also somone with no job is a no no unless they are a prince and dont need to work of course

garlicbutter · 03/04/2012 16:30

professional dole scronger that has not worked a day in his life, is 40 and lives with mum - sounds like a catch, Skinned Grin

Thanks to this thread I've now added woo peddlers, career Tories, sex industry owners/workers, high-flying lawyers and journalists to my ever-growing list.

I'm considering designers for inclusion as well; the ones I've dated have all been so in love with themselves, I didn't stand a chance.

I really must write this list! Good thread, OP, hope you enjoyed your poo :)

garlicbutter · 03/04/2012 16:33

Further thoughts on scrounger that has not worked a day in his life, is 40 and lives with mum ... Good thing Prince Chas isn't dating Wink

LiarsWife · 03/04/2012 16:37

Garlic Prince Chas is 63 ...

RedRosie · 03/04/2012 16:44

Woo-peddler - brilliant. Damn right I wouldn't.

Has anyone mentioned ...

Estate Agents.

Would you date one of them?

LiarsWife · 03/04/2012 16:53

StrawberrytallCAKE Tue 03-Apr-12 15:09:59

Footballers - egotistical cheaters who never grew up
Musicians - too depressing and angst ridden.
Recruitment Consultants & Estate Agents - slimy bastards

MrsTittleMouse · 03/04/2012 17:04

Anything where I would be effectively married to his job.

So no forces, because of all the threads on Forces Sweethearts about moving and getting your housekeeping scrutinised, and what to wear to the socials, and having your own status linked to whether you were married to a private or a major (not counting all the stress when they're away).

And no politicians, because of the New of the World finding my threads about keeping my adult bedroom stuff locked away from the DCs. Grin

MrsTittleMouse · 03/04/2012 17:06

I know three policemen (in a social, not professional capacity :)). Two are completely lovely, and one is an utter, utter bastard.

marshmallowpies · 03/04/2012 17:08

I have met a police officer and an estate agent (one a friend, the other a friend of a friend) who were lovely, decent, kind, trustworthy people. However, they also weren't men Grin

hellsbells76 · 03/04/2012 17:18

professional dole scronger that has not worked a day in his life, is 40 and lives with mum - you've met my ex then? Grin

I would also run a million miles from police/army. Went on a date with a social worker - he was very odd. Talked constantly and without pause for breath about himself for the entire date - I have no idea how he does his job with that complete inability to listen...

I tend to end up with IT boys...I think it's my very slightly nerdish tendencies that draw them in.

PostBellumBugsy · 03/04/2012 17:20

Thank you for the reminder on estate agents. No, don't think I could. Surely, if there are professional fibbers out there, it has to be estate agents!

Teaandcakeplease · 03/04/2012 17:24

Has pilots been mentioned yet? Unless you do not mind them being away A LOT.

AWomanCalledHorse · 03/04/2012 17:24

DH is a PC, he's lovely, although a significant number of the men (and women!) he works with are utter cunts when it comes to being faithful/naice to their DP's (used to work with him, so know these people in a professional/friendly capacity).

Can I add authors? Bit like actors but with added 'I'm superior cos I can write good'-ness.
Also newspaper paparazzi men, always flying off somewhere at short notice.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 03/04/2012 17:25

Social workers and any jesus-sandal wearing profession

PostBellumBugsy · 03/04/2012 17:25

The being away alot appeals to me Tea! Grin I'm going to keep watching this thread for tips. I've got soldiers, pilots & MI5/MI6 agents so far!
