I was watching the Trisha show this morning and she said that smoking pot can seriously affect relationships becasuse it can distort the way you understand things and you take things in a different way.
I don't smoke myself but does anyone have any experience of a partner who smokes pot regularly, all day as a cigarette smoker does?
What effect has it had and how do you get them to damn well stop it?

pops in......oompph.........ducks out

Jimjams · 24/11/2003 14:25

I went out with someone once who smoked a lot. He had a distinct lack of motivation to do anything (like get up). He realised he had a problem and started to cut down but we split up anyway. If I had had responsibilities- like children at the time I think it would have driven me mad. No idea how you stop them, think they have to work it out for themselves really.

M2T · 24/11/2003 14:26

Linzoid - I know a couple who smoke it all day. They are the most paranoid, unpredictable people I know!! They are very good friends of mine and I used to indulge in my student days..... I knew when to stop, they didn't.
Sometimes they can both be SOOO volatile it's scary.

Lol@Doormat.

ThomCat · 24/11/2003 14:34

Yeah - wait for me Doormat!!!!

Actually - I know a couple of people who smoke it all day and all night and both have full time jobs and cope just fine. Also I know creative people who work from home who like to smoke just before starting a project as it really helps get them in the zone so to speak.
There's no way I could smoke during the day and live my life but each to his own. Having said that if DP smoked all day and I didn't it would drive me mad as he's already massively laid back, anymore and he'd never move a muscle!

linzoid · 24/11/2003 14:38

I guess what i am trying to establish is, is it the dope that causes the behaviour in the person in question or are they just like that anyway? I know you can't tell me that but there have been so many times when i have argued and been left astounded thinking how can he possibly be viewing it like that? I never put it down to the dope before until it was brought up on the trisha show now i'm thinking he might be much easier to deal with if it wasn't for the dope?? He is definately not slowed down as i would have expected if anything he's quite energetic...weird

linzoid · 24/11/2003 14:39

could also be because he's a musician i'm told.....

motherinferior · 24/11/2003 14:43

Wait for me, doormat and Thomcat...

hmb · 24/11/2003 14:47

Well, it is a depressant drug. I'm using that is the biological way, not 'it causes depression'. It depresses brain activity; alcohol and sedatives are also depressants.

I have no experience of anyone I know using it on even an occasional basis, so I can't comment from personal experience.

pie · 24/11/2003 14:51

My grandparents smoke it all the time (amongst doing other things)...and yeah they're paranoid and the rest of it. But I think that they're miserable sods even without it. They function perfectly well though in day to day stuff.

My mother was thinking of suing them though for giving her LSD when she was 13, so maybe it did serioulsy distort things for them.

ThomCat · 24/11/2003 15:16

Yeah see the creative person I was talking about is a musician and when he was making his music, dance/house stuff he worked better / created better musuc if he smoked a spliff before going into the studio.

Pie - your DGP gave you DM LSD when she was 13!!!!
She should sue - that's disgustingly outrageous.

lucy123 · 24/11/2003 15:18

linzoid - I think it's a combination of both.

I know people who smoke all the time with no probs, and others who are quite clearly affected (those people becoming complete monsters when they can't get any).

Can't say I have noticed anyone having a distorted way of thinking due to marijuana though. Aside from paranoia and general insecurity that is.

pie · 24/11/2003 15:18

TC, apparenlty they were experiementing on her (note they didn't give it to her 2 sisters). My mum from the time she was 10 would have to babysit every friday night her little sister so my DGPs could drop acid together. Then they got into trepanning...

To say my mum doesn't have a good relationship with her parents is an understatement.

ThomCat · 24/11/2003 15:20

Blimey Pie!!!!!!!!!! And to think we feel bad if we have a bit of a hangover on a Sunday around our kids!
What's trepanning? Or do I not want to know?

pie · 24/11/2003 15:23

I think that is how you spell it, but it is when you have a hole drilled into your scull. The theory being that when your fontanel closes over when you are 21 you forever lose the childlike qualities, so to regain them you put a blinking hole in your head.

lucy123 · 24/11/2003 15:24

Pie, that sounds horrific.

hmb · 24/11/2003 15:26

Bloody Hell! That is so dangerous! Not having a gap may make you lose your childish qualities (yeh, right!), but trying to put one back in your head makes you an idiot!

pie · 24/11/2003 15:32

Its been around for centuries If you want to know more

hmb, never thought of it like that. Anyway, I think being brought up in this enviroment, mary jane has always seemed so tame iykwim!

ThomCat · 24/11/2003 15:34

OMG Pie!!!!!!!! They had holes drilled in their heads?!!! If you want to tell us more I'd be very interested, just in an 'oh my God' sort of way, not becasue I'm thinking of having it done.

Why did they give her acid thought - what were they thinking? Your poor little mum!

CountessDracula · 24/11/2003 15:52

Pie your grandparents sound very experimental (and a bit mental) Your poor mum, what a nightmare for her.

I know several people who smoke all day every day. Some are fine and function as normal. Others are rather odd. Others are obviously damaged (slow, forgetful, dopey). One good friend of mine is now a paranoid schizophrenic and had to be sectioned, I am sure smoking too much contributed to his problems.

I used to smoke quite a lot (evenings only though) but hardly ever now, never buy it any more but will have the odd one at parties. And now you mention it DH and I argue a lot less often than we did when we were smoking. And I'm not scared of escalators any more....

hmb · 24/11/2003 15:54

As I understand it, the Egyptians used to carry out tripanning, as did various prehistoric societies. But then, they didn't know what the brain does in living things. I repeat, Bloody Hell! What an amazingly stupid thing to even think of doing!!!!

hmb · 24/11/2003 15:57

Never used it, and I know it is not scientific, but all I've got to say is Paul Macartney. From 'Yesterday' to the 'Frog Chorus' via MJ ???

ThomCat · 24/11/2003 16:02

Drac man - you sound just like me. I used to jump 10 foot clear off the escalators and take 15 minutes trying to get on one!!!!!!! ha haaaaa!!!And I have a mate that got sectioned becasue of smoking too much hash. he rewrote th bible in a night , covered up all the mirrors, emptied all the plant pots out and left post it notes with messages on every surface he could see! He was living with my BF at the time.

lou33 · 24/11/2003 16:11

I think it depends on the person. It makes me seizures, I know someone who has turned into a paranoid, withered and self obsessed person on it, and dated another who just used to float around happily all day, and held a full time job down no probs.

CountessDracula · 24/11/2003 16:14

Sounds about right TC! My mate was sectioned for threatening to kill someone Last time he stayed with us I was upstairs on my own and heard him getting something out of the cutlery drawer, thought he was going to stab me so armed myself with a blunt implement and when I got down he was making a sarnie. I have another one that should have been sectioned, he would leave 40 minute rantings on the answerphone at work (i worked with him) and was convinced that aliens were after him...

LOL re escalators, do you still get it. I used to walk miles to avoid the one at Angel as so long!

codswallop · 24/11/2003 16:16

I just thin they are notrmally very tedious people who cant think of anything interseating to talk about so wibble on boringly.
