Quick one. on mozilla there is a search bar on the top right of screen. when you type in a letter searches have made come up. below are suggestion. can you have searches that you hsven't done Thanks

thenightsky · 03/12/2011 21:00

Nope... only ones you have done.

Bogeyface · 03/12/2011 21:01

Yes. The previous searches starting with that letter (or letters) come up first then (depending on how many there are) there is a thick black line. After the line are the suggestions.

I have done this too......going on the search bar with each letter of the alphabet, what I found wasnt nice :(

Bogeyface · 03/12/2011 21:11

Oh and the suggestions are usually fairly innocuous, so if you have found porn sites or dating sites etc, they have probably been searched for rather than suggestions.

GypsyMoth · 03/12/2011 21:13

Oh no!!

What did you all find? Porn I'm guessing...

AntiqueAnteater · 03/12/2011 21:32

yes you can have suggestions come up that you havent searched before

same with google

NeedABrew · 03/12/2011 21:51

What a rookie error...this is what InPrivate browsing is for.

Hope you're ok.

venusandChristMARS · 03/12/2011 22:26

xanthum Ignore the posts above.

If you are talking about the little bar at the top right hand side (mine says 'google'), then it comes up with random things that I have never ever looked at. e.g. if I type a 'p' I get 'pandora bracelets' 'pubtropica' and 'papajohns'. If i type 'j' I get 'jailbreakme' 'jimmy johns' and 'justin beiber'. no one else uses my laptop and I can swear that I have never searched for enay of these.

xanthum if you have suddenly got worried because of typing something in that box, then please stop worrying. However if you were searching because you were already concerned, that is a different issue.

venusandChristMARS · 03/12/2011 22:29

And maybe it depends on how your mozilla page is set up....

PurplePidjInAPearTree · 03/12/2011 22:38

My corner google search box does what venusandChristMARS's does, completely random stuff including xbox, which I'm not interested in and has DP frothing at the mouth (he's not a computer games fan) so I assume it's the "most popular" searches

Oh, and stuff like JCPenney and "Dancing with the Stars" came up so it's clearly Americanised Wink

My most common searches are for crochet and sewing patterns - neither of which came up until I had "free cr" and "free sew" typed in...

GypsyMoth · 03/12/2011 23:03

Venus, that's a bit rude ' ignore the posts above'....

SulkySullenDame · 03/12/2011 23:07

My box suggests random stuff like Venus's.

izzywhizzysmincepies · 03/12/2011 23:13

You've been unnecessarily rude venus, and you're incorrect to say that what's revealed is entirely random.

My search box is exactly the same as Bogey' has outlined. Anything above the line has been actively searched for at some point; anything below are google generated 'suggestions.

Perhaps you should take a look at the computer history to see whether any suspicions you may have can be confirmed, xanthum.

venusandChristMARS · 04/12/2011 00:39

Apologies if I've been rude - that why I posted that it may depend on how your mozilla page is set up. Certainly on mine it's nothing to do with anything I've ever searched or used (and from what it looks like that's the same for some other people too).

Bogeyface · 04/12/2011 00:43

You can set it up tp delete search history or not save it (not sure which), which is why yours doesnt do that venus.

Toadinthehole · 05/12/2011 05:26

Really?

When I type search terms into my Mozilla browser, nothing happens at all. Even though I have "show suggestions" ticked.

How do I turn it on?

loserface · 05/12/2011 08:10

Mine comes up with stuff specifically searched for and then there is a small black line beneath them with stuff suggested. It has suggestions written next to them but not next to the ones that have actually been searched for.

PattySimcox · 05/12/2011 12:11

I'm running Mozilla firefox and have just put different letters in and its come up with stuff that I know I haven't searched for - DH has his own machine as do the DCs so I think (depending on how you have FF set up) it can bring up common search terms.

xanthum · 06/12/2011 07:32

Thanks guys. Haven't been able to get on to say thanks for your advice. It was weird. One of them was "Pornhub" and "Freesexdates" and that kind of thing. The way these were written without spaces would suggest that someone didn't type them into the search bar. DP swears blind he didn't do it and was very upset about the whole thing, as was I!

He really is the most trustworthy man I've ever met so I am going with believing him. I checked the individual sites visited in history and these sites were not shown so fingers crossed all is well.

Thanks so much for your help x

Oh dear.

ISayHolmes · 06/12/2011 10:16

I very much doubt they'd let suggested searches include anything to do with porn/sex unless it had been typed in before. It'd cause a shitstorm if people's children went to search for "free games" and got "free sex dates" instead. For example, when you type "free sex dates" into Google or the google search bar the live search will go blank as soon as you type "sex", won't produce results and waits for you to press enter instead, so their programs detect it somehow and won't suggest anything.

I'd say someone has typed in those search terms. Sorry.

bubblechristmaspop · 06/12/2011 11:10

OFC they did, search engines don't throw up sex terms as suggestions, even with safety off. They aren't allowed too.

Op has been had, encouraged by some here trying to be right.

Moz does all of the above depending on settings. What it does not do however is suggest such sites.

Your husband is lying op, trustworthy? Free sex dated. yes ofc love.

bubblechristmaspop · 06/12/2011 11:11

to dates *yes that post was appalling, so tired.

tabulahrasa · 06/12/2011 11:16

Things like that don't come up as suggestions - in fact if you type in porn it stops suggesting anything

Step · 06/12/2011 11:31

Under a search ours suggested "vidyeoos of sex", on asking number 1 son aged 13 how to spell video suspicions were confirmed. Claims it wasn't him though..... he thoughtfully added he deleted all his internet history, but started to look a little horrified when we told him Google search history was held seperately.
I think he just might possibly be lying.

loserface · 06/12/2011 17:27

Yeah sorry OP but that has been typed in deliberatly Xmas Sad

Agree with others about how they don't let stuff like that be suggested.

Does anyone else have access to the pc or is it just you and DP?
