Do you share a bank account?

How many of you married couples share a bank account? How do you feel about this?

We have separate accounts, never had a joint one and dont envisage it happening. DH gives me money towards the bills which mostly come out of my account. If he's a bit more flush than me, he'll pay for more things and vice versa. I much prefer to be financially independent.

I'm a SAHM so DH is earning all the funds and we work as follows:

  • DH has his own bank accounts into which his salary is paid
  • He transfers a lump sum each month into our joint acount to cover mortgage and household expenses. I make sure all the bills get paid so generally have control over what's going on in that account
  • He also transfers a lump each month into my personal account, which is for me to use for myself
  • We don't have any savings accounts at the moment as we are ploughing all our money into the mortgage but I do have an (empty) ISA in my name which we would use for any savings stuff

I'm happy with this arrangement as I get my own personal funds and DH is completely open about how much money he has in his accounts
