Do you think they ever leave their wives

Some one I know (not too personally, thank god) has been seeing a MM, if you can call it seeing, the odd night every other month for Nine, yes, nine years. I just got too wondering, now his dc are at 6th form age, will he leave his wife for her? Or, is there ever a time when they do? Looking at these threads blokes do clear off all the time for OW so, how can it be a myth that men never leave their wifes for OW?

Although, I think nine years is a terrible waste of time!!

They only leave their wives if their wives find out about the affair and sling them out, generally.

Sounds like your acquaintance's man has been with his wife for a long time. That's one expensive divorce. Not an incentive to leave, really, is it?

bottyburpthebarbarian · 13/08/2010 19:26

Is she my friend??

I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall with this friend, she shags this guy a few times a month.

He promises her that at some indeterminate point in the future he is going to leave his wife.

She believes him.

Its been going on for 4 years.

whomovedmychocolate · 13/08/2010 19:26

Yep Bacofoil is right. And a married man who has a long term affair is fundamentally flawed and frankly, not what you want for a long term relationship.

mumofsweetpeas · 13/08/2010 19:29

Does his wife not know then? I would tell her personally. I know I would want to know.

And sorry to be thick, but what does MM stand for?

Haliborange · 13/08/2010 19:31

No, he'll never leave. Why should he?

I do know men who have left (without first being caught) but always in the first few months of an affair and usually as some part of a midlife-crisis/youth-reliving thing, never after nine years.

Bacofoil · 13/08/2010 19:31

Mighty Mouse, mosp.

Or married man, whichever you prefer.

bottyburpthebarbarian · 13/08/2010 19:32

Married Man I assume MOSP?

PeppermintPasty · 13/08/2010 19:32

Married Man.

Wow there must be something about nine years. There's a woman in my village who's been doing the same!! Rumour mill is that she is now preggers!!! Good grief.

Ah, nothing like a bit of friday night gossip

Haliborange · 13/08/2010 19:34

Also, I can't help thinking that "the odd night every over month" is not a relationship. I would think that to his mind it is just sex. His wife is probably no slouch and they probably have a happy home together. He's no doubt still sleeping with his wife, so OP I hope your friend has her own life/other relationships too.

bleedingheart · 13/08/2010 19:37

I think if they're going to leave; it's normally early on in the affair. If they leave only when rumbled, there's a good chance they'll return begging for another chance and if they haven't left after 9 years, they probably never will.

emmyloulou · 13/08/2010 19:42

You won't get through to her someone in my distant family has done this for 20 years now.

He is loaded, gives her money keeps her sweet, wife knows it's happening but is kept in luxury, he won't divorce because of the £££.

He has been telling her years he will leave, he still hasn't. He sees her randomly like this, but he is her life, he is a nasty little control freak.

She sits at home waiting for him to call/visit etc and can't have a life, she even gave up her job for him, and he goes home to wifey and leaves her alone for weeks at a time Angry she can't see it or him for what it is.

kittya · 13/08/2010 19:45

Oh, shes not my friend. Not remotely. I just think its sad really, I mean she is mid thirties with no children. Does his wife know? I wouldnt like to say to be honest. I do know that she is the main other woman but I also know that there have been others every now and again. She thinks shes the only one though.

Hell, what else are we going to discuss on a Friday night? The telly is rubbish and its too early for wine time!!

Emmy, maybe its short man syndrome, he is a little nasty piece of work also!!

traceybath · 13/08/2010 19:54

I think if they're going to leave they generally do it very early on - so the affair was more of a catalyst for the end of the marriage.

Not ideal obviously but have seen that happen quite a bit.

StudiousSal · 13/08/2010 19:54

The only way he'll leave his wife is if she kicks him out.

Their cowards who have no guts, they want their cake and eat it.

PeppermintPasty · 13/08/2010 20:01

Too early for wine time... -that's the scariest thing I've heard on here for a while. Have a word with yourself woman!!

kittya · 13/08/2010 20:08

I know its Friday night and everything but I like to wait until 830!! stupid I know. After reading this thread, it may have to be a g and t!!

Nah, tend to agree with those who say not after that long!

Sometimes MM leave- FIL left MIL after 35 years (40 including before marriage) but when he went it was fairly decisive in the weeks after starting the relationship (and they are now getting wed).

nine years well, thats damned good luck for married men who like that sort of thing isn't it?

kittya · 13/08/2010 20:24

Thats what I thought but, once the children are at uni, I wonder what the excuse will be then?

OP posts:
Haliborange · 13/08/2010 20:59

Kids at uni can still cause family issues that mean he needs to stay at home. Or maybe then his wife will develop problems and "she's put up with me for so long, I cant leave her now in case it tips her over the edge".

Tb perfectly honest this sort of arrangement puts me in mind of a prostitute and a regular punter (the once a month, lack of commitment business anyway). Except instead of putting his hand in his pocket he pays her in lies. I'd rather get money than be lied to.

kittya · 13/08/2010 21:02

I wouldnt be surprised if there was some kind of financial arrangement or, at least nice presents, hotels etc.
