Anyone else disappointed about the new 5 Live breakfast presenters?

Gutted to read Naga Munchetty is taking over 5live breakfast show. That's my morning walk ruined. Nothing against her personally but she's one of my least favourite radio presenters ever because she comes across as either fake or angry but either way she's not pleasant to listen to. No idea why the bbc love her so much. The current presenters have a good rapport and are funny to listen to, don't know why they have to change

I agree, Rick and Rachel work well together. I can't listen to Naga, she comes across as condescending and cold. I like listening on my way to work so I'm annoyed.

LlynTegid · 28/07/2026 20:37

I get the impression that for whatever reason Naga Muchetty and Charlie Stayt don't get on, so this change will create a more harmonious BBC Breakfast on Thursdays and Fridays.

MMAMPWGHAP · 28/07/2026 20:43

Grown to really dislike Rachel so pleased to hear she is going. Gutted that she’s getting the morning slot. Find them all too gushy tbh.

AshtonGardens · 28/07/2026 20:51

I don't listen to 5 Luve anymore but happened to be listening randomly a few years ago. The presenter was so needlessly rude and unprofessional that I had to google who it was, as I couldn't believe they were for real. Of course that was Naga Munchetty, who I'd not come across before, and I can't believe that she still has a career in broadcasting! I used to listen back in tbe Nicky Campbell days, and he was frequently obnoxious, but this was a whole new level.

I have no idea which breakfast show I will listen to now. I love Rachel and Rick together, they are both intelligent and skilled broadcasters who can move seamlessly between news/political and serious stuff to more light-hearted segments. I like the way they work together and their humour and humanity.

I find Naga really hard to listen to and never listen to her mid-morning show. I have no idea why but I find her presenting style really grating and quite self-obsessed. This is just my personal opinion, I know she is an experienced and knowledgeable journalist. Radio 5 is my go to station, I cannot get along with Radio 4 these days. I hate commercial radio due to the commercial breaks and heavy rotation playlists. I prefer non-music stations in the morning but the commercial ones are just awful and heavily biased/bigoted.

I do love some of the breakfast stand-ins and of course we have no idea who Naga will be working with, but I am slightly pessimistic that anyone will be able to tone down her pompous delivery and 'head girl' character.

BacksToTheFuture · 28/07/2026 22:37

Im really disappointed with the news, I know it must be gruelling doing a breakfast show especially for Rick with a young child so I sympathise but I won't be listening anymore next year

Who thought replacing two presenters with lovely genuine chemistry with Naga was a good move, a really bizarre choice imo

ElegantlyDressing · 28/07/2026 22:52

5Live has been my station of choice since the Radio 5 days which must be 30 odd years ago. Time after time my heart has sunk a bit when a change of presenters has been announced, but I never stop listening and always get used to them and generally end up liking them whatever my first impressions. I just like the format, news, sport, topical chat, reporters, guests, callers, no adverts. There is one reporter I switch off but that's all. So no issue with this change. Peter Allen still remains my all time favourite though.

Dameputtingonabraveface · 29/07/2026 00:09

@ ElegantlyDressing, I do agree, I remember feeling quite anxious when the Nicky and Rachel partnership ended but love her and Rick together. I actually find Nicky Campbell quite annoying these days. I just really struggle with Naga M, but I will give it a go. I love Steffan Powell when he stands in and Rima Ahmed does a good job as well. I hope Naga M works out but I find I always switch off when I happen to be working from home and have the radio on. With the current breakfast show, I will listen to it on BBC sounds later if I leave early and have not been able to listen from the beginning (I usually leave at 8- often start listening from Wake up to Money).

Dameputtingonabraveface · 29/07/2026 00:25

@TickedOffAndALittleFedUp Thankyou for starting this thread. No one I know listens to 5live and since DH died many years ago, it has become my background noise and company at times! I feel quite bereft since hearing the news (not live as I left for work quite early today). I love radio, and I particularly love BBC radio and podcasts. Certain presenters do become a part of our routine and Radio 5 is so good at being topical and keeping those of us who are interested in news, current affairs and politics up to date. I am not massively into sport, and would not listen to a football match, for example, but loved Rick's coverage from the USA and the general vibes and crazy stuff. And it nice to be updated about the commonwealth games, which no one is covering but means so much to the amazing athletes taking part

Bitwarmtoday · 29/07/2026 00:51

Love Naga, so I'm happy!

Dameputtingonabraveface · 29/07/2026 01:07

@Bitwarmtoday, let's hope she works out and whoever she is paired with brings out some humour and balances out the stuff people seem to have issue with in her presenting style (lots of trolls to be ignored online but she does not seem generally liked reading between the vile posts). Every time I tune into her mid morning programme I find her style insufferable- even though I know she is a good journalist and I am sure she is a decent person. Weirdly I suffer from adenomyosis and she has done so much to highlight this issue so I feel really unkind. Just every time I have heard her speak about it, it comes across as it is all about her, even though I know this is not her intent. Her presenting style just does not gel with me, but I am sure there are many people who would have the same opinion about me in day-to-day life!

Why would anyone still be listening to the BBC these days when the internet is full of hilarious & fun podcasts on platforms like YouTube or Spotify.

Maybe because they don't want to listen to hilarious and fun podcasts all or any of the time. Hardly a difficult concept to understand.

SleepQuest33 · 29/07/2026 07:06

i really like Naga. She’ll do well.

Learningdutch · 29/07/2026 07:15

I really only listen to Naga on "Must Watch". To start with I couldn't stand her but either she's toned things down a bit or I've just got used to her.

Sunshineandrainbow · 29/07/2026 07:17

Gutted too, I have radio 5 on all night so wake up to breakfast and then listen on half hour drive to work.

I am wondering if it was their decision to leave, I didn't hear the announcement live as had started work.

Unless they are really good actors it definitely sounded like it was their own choice

It will be very interesting to see the impact on the listener numbers

TickedOffAndALittleFedUp · 29/07/2026 10:58

I used to listen to radio 4 (have listened to the archers forever) and still do for specific things but 5live is my on all day in the background noise. Over the years presenters change and generally it's ok but since Naga took over the mid morning slot i rarely listen to it. I will probably go back to radio 4 Today show and see how that is because I need something good to start the day.
Agree with PP btw that Nicky Campbell who I used to really enjoy is getting more and more irritating and Peter Allen was excellent and still missed.
i do like Adrian Chiles though, Matt Chorley is good too and 5 live drive is a nice end before sports takes over.

ElegantlyDressing · 29/07/2026 11:03

I've gone the other way with Nicky Campbell, he used to grate on me but now I really like him. Same with Adrian Chiles. I don't listen during the day much, usually just Breakfast and Drive on my way to and from work, plus football on Saturday afternoons in season and daytime slots maybe an hour or so once during the week if driving anywhere but on the odd occasion I have listened to Naga in the past I haven't had any issues with her style. I suspect many listeners are like me and have been there so long that we aren't fazed by a change of presenter, also there is no equivalent elsewhere. And no, podcasts aren't a substitute, I listen to them as well but they are different.

They do get on but they tease each other, I find their relationship amusing. I do like Naga she has a dry sense of humour and positive opinions about things you get straight answers.

While I think Rachel is nice and I like the rapport with Rick I do think she's out of her depth and lacks the sharpness (of brain) Naga has. I'll miss Naga on her morning show and don't think Rachel is a great replacement.

Yellowshirt · 29/07/2026 18:06

Naga never talks about anything interesting. It's always absolutely depressing subjects.
The news bulletins have actually become a bonus now during her shows whereas normally I'll listen to the news only once or twice during the day as not much changes on a daily basis.

Oh I don't find that the case at all. She has small wins from the weekend from listeners, during the world cup she had her armchair panel. She always asks guests their opinion on whatever trivia point she has that show. She has a great rapport with Matt Chorley. I'm pretty sure she lives in the south so wonder how that will work with the show coming from Manchester. I think Rachel moved to Manchester.

I find it very bizarre that the BBC is publishing schedules for 2022?!?!?
