Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to be Brian's child or stepchild, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

YEsterday I listened to a radio play on R4 extra from 1991, a Fatal Inversion by Barbara Vine (Ruth Rendell). ADam played one of the main characters, his voice sounded really different, only the occasional mild hint of the whiney voice it turned into. Hardly recognised him.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/07/2026 14:46

Yes, I've almost certainly bored on about this several times by now. I remember some complaints on Feedback when Adam first came back from Africa that it was difficult to tell him apart from all the other posher men. He seems to have adopted this distinctive but intensely annoying delivery to sort that problem out. One solved, another created! The actor also plays the blokey teacher friend of Clare in the Community's wimpy partner and sounds completely different.

Adam was played by the same actor as Kenton and Alistair but he had a cold. I remember it well. Smile

I know the People of Ambridge seem to spend almost no time at all doing their actual jobs - is that why Chris the farrier is not as tanned as all the other farriers? What a strange thing for him to be fretting about
Maybe he works indoors a lot of the time.

Wouldn't Kristiffur ask Chelsea about how to remove fake tan? I've heard Lottie being described as black. I'd have gone for a swim - the chlorine would strip most of it.

I think Kirsty will have a lovely baby boy. Given that Kirsty and Tom lost a baby boy, and Tom went on to have twin girls it might cause him to think a lot about his only son. This could lead to some interesting scenes between them. Since the sexes of babies in fictional areas are often better balanced than in real life, I think Amber and George will have baby Josie.

Sidebeforeself · 10/07/2026 18:41

Was Wren definitely a boy? I always thought their baby was a girl?

ChelseaPargetter · 10/07/2026 18:49

I am pretty sure he was a boy. Google says he was. AskingQuestions or one of the other experts are bound to know for sure.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 10/07/2026 18:50

@TeenToTwentiessympathies to you. I lost my Dad this year. Listening to some old episodes of The Archers on the way back from the hospital visits was the only thing that got me to relax and get a bit of sleep. I hope your Mum pulls through.

I might have just assumed it was a girl cos Wren sounds like a girls name to me ( and makes me shudder cos I don’t like birds!)

Late to this thread. RIP Patricia Greene.

The relationship between George,Amber and her parents is coming along nicely and very interesting.

What's the end game with the Brian saga I wonder?

Die of heart attack leaving inheritance mess and CC can in real life join Shula up north?

JanFebAndOnwards · 10/07/2026 19:32

Not sure I think Iain’s capable of blackmail. What will Adam say?

Gonners · 10/07/2026 20:56

Ian is a thoroughly nasty piece of work. Whatever Adam says, it will be delivered in his customary languid drone and I will wish he was real, so that I could hunt him down and throttle him.

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 10/07/2026 21:18

Wren was a boy. Both Kirsty and Tom refer to Wren as "him".

If the baby is a girl she could be given another bird name like her late brother, Wren. Thrush maybe, or Swallow, or Great tit.
I thought Wren was a girl?

Thank you very much for that, worked for me. What a marvellous life she had.

Just listened to Thursday. Just the tonic i needed. Sophie had a big part, done well, sounded natural.

TherapistInATabard · 10/07/2026 13:42

Yes and he also played Prof Binns in Chamber of Secrets. Carol Tregorran plays Auntie Muriel in Deathly Hallows 😂. There are probably more but their voices are so distinctive.

Oh! Auntie Muriel! She sounded familiar and I looked her up, went "oh I've seen you before" and that was the end of it. I didn't realise that she's also Carol Tregorran. I listen to audiobooks and podcasts all day, and I often google people who sound familiar or just have an interesting voice. I'm getting pretty good at recognising actors doing voiceovers in tv ads, probably to the annoyance of everyone around me when I suddenly sit up and shout "Bill Nighy!" at a furniture advert 😆

Nos4r2 · 11/07/2026 05:43

I dont think Ian is horrible blackmailing Brian. I think its good the way he is fighting for Adam, its what a partner should do, and Brian has it coming. I dont see the love people have for Brian, he is a stuck up snobby land owner who dosnt know when to give up. He treated Miranda terribly and from what I hear he was awful to his wife Jenny. So I hope he gets his come uppance.

When bird hames for children come up, I suggest Shag...

LillianGish · 11/07/2026 07:08

Did anyone else hear Monty being described as a softie (or similar last night) and wonder if he was about to be revealed as the sheep slaughterer?

Crikey!

Darker · 11/07/2026 08:31

I thought Ian was brilliant. Especially at the end on how Brian is treating Adam and Ruari differently.

BeatriceBatchelor · 11/07/2026 08:36

Not entirely sure Harrison is going to return to Fallon's paddling pool, pina colladas and inflatable flamingos.

Something ominous in the way Fallon said wistfully "three more days, he'll be home."
