Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think 19 is an ideal age to have a baby with a convict, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Emma spoke sense to George and Amber tonight. Goodness only knows where this storyline is going. I can't see George being Father of the Year. Oh dear.

Over to you!

Please could everyone stop saying "plate up". Lilian and Justin would not approve.

In fact, we have had barely any Archers royalty appear this week. Just endless newcomers/hangers on/peripherals- Mick, Esmay, Azra, Akram. Even Justin, Kirsty and Rex are second division. I’m happy with time spent with George/Susan/Neil etc as they are so long-established and Ruth has married into the royal family so I suppose she has earned her stripes but no wonder we have found this week dull.

All we need is to hear from Joy tonight at the unveiling and we’ll have a full house.

All we need is to hear from Joy tonight at the unveiling and we’ll have a full house.

And your wish has been granted.

Rochelle’s charges dropped?? 😡

Protest at The Mailbox 9.am sharp tomorrow? Who’s with me?

muddyford · 29/01/2026 19:21

Rex actually said "Mucking in."
And Joy said "Bringing up Rochelle."

Felicitous phrases, methinks.

WMW · 29/01/2026 19:22

So Mick was lying? "They" didn't go to his mate's pub?

Bloody ridiculous, isn't it? Still, it's Thursday, so time for Friday's bombshell I suppose.

And another thing, what's all this about Peggy's influence in a wider way (paraphrasing madly as I've listened live)?

Mumblechum0 · 29/01/2026 19:31

Quite. I’ve only been listening for about 10 years so maybe I’ve missed something, but what did Peggy achieve in her life?
other than normal stuff I mean.

I was thinking that.

Also, did we get to hear what the art work looked like in the end? I confess I wasn't listening very carefully.

The square root of SFA, I think.

OrphanBlankly · 29/01/2026 19:58

I was awfully afraid the billion dollar stained glass would be in a million pieces by the end of the day. Glad they avoided that, at least.

Gonners · 29/01/2026 20:10

I wonder how much that "installation" cost Justin. Because if Peggoi's money only covered the Spinal Tap Stonehenge-sized artefact, he must be considerably out of pocket.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/01/2026 20:25

Well, good.

Gonners · 29/01/2026 20:41

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/01/2026 20:25

I would go slightly further than that and say "Yippee!!!"

Ambridge · 29/01/2026 11:34

I've sincerely loathed Joy since Day 1 and if anything Mick's arrival has only intensified my feelings. However, I reserve a different and special loathing for him.

(ETA - it’s a pity because I did once see the Mick actor in a stage-play - not a pantomime - and he was incredibly good at physical comedy; completely stole the show)

Edited

Was that at the RSC with Mark Addy?

SPQRomanus · 29/01/2026 21:24

If Rochelle has met someone and it's going well, dare we hope that the man won't want to uproot his family and ever come to live in Ambridge, meaning that we won't ever have to hear her again?

I do hope so. I'd even put up with the ridiculousness of dropping the charges if that was the case.

DeanElderberry · 29/01/2026 21:49

Has anyone seen effective stained glass in an open air setting? I can't get my mind around the concept. Rainbow and sunset sound trite and obvious even if it was in an indoor light flooding dark space setting, but outdoors? How?

stilldumdedumming · 29/01/2026 21:53

I feel like the Mick lying thing is a red herring- and someone else is lying. Although Mick is awful and probably did something in the whole George- thing

DeanElderberry · 29/01/2026 21:55

Maybe George is having seizures and falling over a lot and that's how he cracked his head.

Though you'd think the hospital might have sussed it.

AnneWhittle · 29/01/2026 22:10

oooh interesting idea

but wrt Azra not seeming concerned, we never hear people's thoughts so maybe the last vestiges of professionalism prevented her voicing to Susan 'of course, he may have undiagnosed epilepsy and if only I wasn't hospital-phobic I might have requested the special epilepsy blood test'

Trivium4all · 29/01/2026 22:26

I think I do the opposite of @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g, and tend to plate up mostly for fancy dinners. But in German culture, it's more normal to have dishes in the middle of the table and pass them around, so everyone can take what they like. I've long thought that this is a contributing factor to German kids tending to be less picky (on the whole; of course there are also picky German kids!) than British ones. Food just doesn't turn into as much of a bone of contention. My parents had the rule that we couldn't say something was disgusting if we hadn't tried a tiny bit, because we couldn't possibly know if it was disgusting. But if we tried a tiny bit, and said we didn't like it, we didn't have to eat any more of it, and pudding wasn't conditional on eating an arbitrary amount of food someone else put on our plates.

As for Azra, I got the impression that she was very concerned, and thought he needed to go in immediately for scans. I thought it normal that she didn't theorise much aloud, just insisted that a person with a recent head injury needed to go to A&E for scans/investigation.

Won’t it get covered in bird poop? A fitting tribute to Peggy in a way in which they never imagined.

No, it was One Man, Two Guvnors in the West End. Martin Barrass played a very old man with a repeating gag flinging himself down a staircase, and flung himself with ever more abandon until the whole house was practically weeping with mirth.

Or smashed up by drunken Ambridgians waving Chardonnay bottles. Or beavers chewing the wooden surround.

Nos4r2 · 30/01/2026 06:10

Is it a tribute though seeing Peggy paid for it herself. It's not as though it was dedicated by someone like The Nurse Cavell statue at the side of the National Portrait Gallery. I mention her because I don't think anyone has asked to tear it down.

WombatCowgirl · 30/01/2026 06:13

Agreed, it's a self-aggrandizing Ozymandias-style memorial!
