Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think 19 is an ideal age to have a baby with a convict, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Emma spoke sense to George and Amber tonight. Goodness only knows where this storyline is going. I can't see George being Father of the Year. Oh dear.

Over to you!

there is a small wickerwork museum close to where i live - they do workshops for all sorts of groups. All the kindergarten and primary schools go at least once a year with a group of children.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 12/02/2026 11:55

Did Amber ever shut up and listen to George? It was very annoying.

No, she babbled on and ON in a very desperate attempt to stop George talking - it bordered on gaslighting him into thinking he was going mad. Very odd.

I read that as Wickerman. 😵

back in the day, basket weaving was one of the activities offered to people in institutions for people with poor mental health etc.

When i was in the army, if anyone gave the slightest inkling of a mental blip the cry would go up "send him on a basket weaving course"

so - wrongly or rightly - that is what i associate basket weaving with.

Any link to the phrase 'basket case'? Somewhere in this house we have my husband's great-uncle's certificates awarded when he successfully completed his basketmaking apprenticeship. His firm was in or near the Charing Cross Road, I think, and I suppose at the time (1900s?) there was a great demand for huge baskets and hampers in markets and laundries.

am guessing that is where it came from?

Thanks, I was too lazy to look it up. Sad.

I haven't had the radio on much this week so I haven't been hearing the adverts, I hope it is coming to a conclusion finally, they've dragged it out long enough!

So this is what I think we heard at the end last night...

Jazzer getting his lager delivery, then cut to George yelling for someone (???) to answer the door, then cut to Lillian answering her door to someone else ( ??Chris).

I think Amber and Emma knows and Amber is really afraid of how George is going to react when he remembers/figures out what actually happened that night which is why she was so keen to let him believe it was Marky and that it's all over and done with.

Gonners · 12/02/2026 15:35

That's what I heard too, though I heard David (rather than Chris) calling to Lilian. But listening again, you may be right. If so, it may be something completely unrelated to George, e.g. Alice or a horse (or both).

TheUsualChaos · 12/02/2026 15:51

Ah yes you're right, the person at Lillian's door is probably nothing to do with the clouting. More red herrings! I hope Alice isn't drinking again.

It was George at Lillian's. Confirmed by the BBC Sounds plot summary

Edited

Mathias has already confirmed it was George at Lillian's door. The BBC think it was, anyway. However, I'm sure that's going to be a red herring. I can't believe that either Lillian or Justin bonked George on the head with a wine bottle. I think he's going to take her to task about someone else who was in The Bull on New Year's Eve, because he thinks she knows something about it. No idea, who, though.

Oh ok interesting. It just didn't sound right at the end. Going straight from yelling I know you're in there to asking to come in, in a relatively calm manner. Yes I think he has realised Lillian will be able to tell him something that helps piece it together. Well the SW wanted us all confused and they've succeeded!

I agree, it didn't sound anything like George and I've listened several times to make sure.

Gonners · 12/02/2026 16:47

Maybe (a) Angus Stobie lost his voice from all the shouting and someone else stood in for him; or (b) the 12-year-old intern who wrote the BBC Sounds plot summary didn't get it checked by a grown-up.

AnotherHormonalWoman · 12/02/2026 17:22

Read this thread before listening. Still found myself yelling at Amber for railroading over George, and gaslighting him - never thought I'd be on George's side for something! It's as if getting engaged and pregnant so early on in a relationship isn't a very good idea 😒

I'm somebody who would love a little coffee shop in a van, and have looked into both converting a horsebox or trailer and buying a good to go one. £5k is a thin streak of piss in the wind compared to how much it'll cost to put that crock of shit successfully through an MOT, let alone properly convert it. I have a friend who had her own beautiful little salon and she told me once that the backwash chair/sink thingy for washing hair alone cost in excess of £5k - granted that was the most expensive thing for her, but she didn't have to sort out carrying and heating fresh and grey water, and council permits and the like will cost a minimum of £500 or so. I really don't think she'd get much change out of £15k minimum, and that's assuming that this crock of shit can be made roadworthy.

Agree that it's inconceivable that she isn't already doing a roaring trade as a mobile hairdresser. Putting that £4.5k into a little run around car for that would be an infinitely better plan. She could do wedding hair at GG and LL within the guests' own suites, I doubt any bridal parties would rather go out to a horsebox conversion on their big day morning than have it done in their rooms/at home!

Definitely think that was George & Lilian - I assume he's gone there for Justin, rather than Lil? If it was Justin perhaps the recent rewilding storylines, are feeding into it, especially with the emphasis on Lilian's approval of the stained glass fiasco? I could imagine him being utterly unrepentant, childish and minimising about a bottle to George's head though. Lilian's reaction would be a gloriously complicated one.

BeaLola · 12/02/2026 17:33

I was thinking last night that oerhapa Lillian was ay the Bull opening the doir at not at home ?

I admire Chelseas enthusiasm but surely kitting out the horsebox and insurance and everything will cost a lot more than the £5k she has ?

To me it sounded much more like somebody who he wanted to accuse directly was in there, and that he softened when it wasn't that exact person who answered the door. Although goodness knows they like a red herring on this SL.

I assumed it was Lilian's home, but would it have been the Bull, maybe? Most pubs would be closed mid-afternoon on a week day.

Madcats · 12/02/2026 17:46

BBC Sounds must have had eleventy billion re-listens of Wednesday’s episode. I still don’t think the last voice was George (if it was, shame on the producer for not making him use the right ‘voice’).

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 12/02/2026 17:50

The male didn't sound like George and the female didn't sound like Lilian, but that is who the BBC synopsis says they were.

WorriedRelative · 12/02/2026 17:52

TheUsualChaos · 11/02/2026 22:46

George really didn't sound like George when Lillian answered the door. He went from bellowing through the door to sounding more reserved. Was that even George right at the end, I listened again and can't decide. It did sound a bit like him but it was odd.

Whatever is going on I think Amber and Emma both know the truth. I think George said something when he was semi conscious. Always thought it was odd who they were both so keen to push the Marky theory based on no evidence.

Re. The horsebox, on this occasion I'm prepared to let any lack of realism go because I just love Chelsea and it's about time she had something really positive to focus on. Go Chelsea! O

I wondered whether it was someone else speaking or whether the abrupt change in tone was because George wasn't expecting to see Lillian there.

Say he was going to confront someone else but Lillian answered their door instead.

The only thing is the only doors I can imagine Lillian opening other than her own are the ones at The Bull. She doesn't strike me as the type to answer the door while visiting friends.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 12/02/2026 17:58

If I were Lilian and were inside a house outside which George was bellowing and ranting in a nasty and threatening manner while battering on the door, the last thing I would do is open that door and let him in. I would put on the chain and then ring someone large and male (as it might be David) and ask him to come and tell George to sling his hook. Not the police, probably, if I didn't want him to get his license revoked or whatever (though why she wouldn't want that I cannot imagine after the way he has been carrying on in public) but definitely tough male backup. Lilian is seventy-nine this year and should not have to deal alone with a violent and aggressive twenty-year-old with a grudge against her.

AnneWhittle · 12/02/2026 18:05

agree the change of tone would be accounted for by an unexpected person opening the door

but why would Justin have attacked George?

Gonners · 12/02/2026 18:12

Justin wouldn't have the guts to physically attack anyone, least of all a much younger, physically strong man.

Unless she thinks she's safer answering than the other person? Lillian has faced down George before, it isn't wise but she may well do it again, especially if she isn't the person he's after.

32 minutes to go
(Unless we have a filler episode about Britney Beaver or similar)
