Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think 19 is an ideal age to have a baby with a convict, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Emma spoke sense to George and Amber tonight. Goodness only knows where this storyline is going. I can't see George being Father of the Year. Oh dear.

Over to you!

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime ... That'll be Jarndyce and Jarndyce.

Didn’t Freddie and Lily have to move schools because Elizabeth could no longer afford their fees? That’s how it was in my head anyway.

It was a bit! They communicated by slow snail-back, as far as I could tell.

Just listened to today's episode. What do we think was wrong with George this time?!

Darker · 10/02/2026 20:47

I think he has remembered more about the night he got clobbered.

AnotherHormonalWoman · 10/02/2026 20:50

OH. Perhaps the theory from the spoilers thread a few weeks ago is still going strong over there? *bumbles off to find out

Gonners · 10/02/2026 20:51

Oh good grief! Are we now expected to believe that Chris did it and that Martha (silently) revealed that Daddy had blood on his clothes?

I Really Do Not Care. The only problem I have with George being brained** with a bottle is that it was so inefficiently done. The perp should maybe be punished for that?

** I use the term "brained" loosely. Thick-skulled, perhaps?

Madcats · 10/02/2026 21:15

I CBA with the “who failed to dispatch George” theories.

There are some nice horsebox/barber shop conversions on Insta, but I’ve not seen anything involving significant electricity and water use that female hairdressing typically involves. Does Chelsea even have a big car? A freelance hairdresser typically “rents” a chair in salons near me.

Anyway, I believe it is Tony Archer’s 75th birthday on Monday (a secret party for him would be far more plausible than the current Ruth & David valentine storyline).

AnotherHormonalWoman · 10/02/2026 21:17

Had Martha come straight from the stableyard? Smells are very evocative, so hear me out. Martha had a rare afternoon grooming her own pony. Comes home smelling of him. George inhales the smell and gets a flashback that the pony, annoyed at the lack of attention he was getting from the little girl, had escaped and double barrelled the first human he found, aka George. And planted a broken bottle of wine with him to make it look like it was a human wot dunnit.

I think this is also a return to type for Brian in playing his kids off against one another. He used to do it with Debbie and Adam - it looked like Ruari might be the chosen one purely on account of being Brian’s biological child, but now he’s back to his old ways which I think is much more realistic.

Yep. They should change his name to King Lear.

My FiL and MiL had wills leaving everything to each other; he died, she didn't change hers, and the lawyers took a lovely long time getting probate through

With wills as straightforward as this, as were mine and my late DH's, t's easy and minimal cost to do probate yourself, allowing for decent literacy. I did.

I bloody hate the way lawyers dress up what in many cases is simple, for their profit. When I was making a new will leaving everything but everything to my DD, they were campaigning for a testamentary trust that put the money in their care to be doled out when she needed it. While charging like a wounded bull every time they farted I've no doubt.

She's in her 30s.

I said fuck off no thank you.

His will left everything to her. He died, and his will went through probate really easily. Then she died, and her will left everything to someone who had been dead for a while and whose will had already gone through probate, ie him. Apparently this led to complications about intent.

TheUsualChaos · 10/02/2026 21:53

I think Emma has known all along because George said something to her at the time and now it's suddenly come back to him.

WombatCowgirl · 10/02/2026 21:54

Ooh I haven't listened yet, but yes @AnotherHormonalWoman if it was a horse wot done it (and the "nice set of wheels" remark was referring to a travelling forge or horsebox) then it could be like the Sherlock Holmes story Silver Blaze!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/02/2026 21:56

Oh lord, not another bleedin' homage. I thought we'd got rid of the twerp who showed off with those.

echt · 10/02/2026 21:57

Thinking of mobile salons, the ones I see here in Melbourne are smaller than horse boxes though similar in design, and are for dog wash and grooming.

There best one I saw was while driving over the Bolte Bridge - grooming company was called Doggy Style. Grin

TheUsualChaos · 10/02/2026 22:12

Perhaps it actually was Keira, she was wandering about in the dark, couldn't see it was George coming towards her and panicked.

Love the idea of Chelsea and her mobile salon, good for her! Maybe Amber could help her get a good following going on Instagram.

Trivium4all · 10/02/2026 23:38

I had a 3.5t horsebox for some years. It was a Ford Transit conversion, though Renault and Citroën are more common makes. £5k is rather cheap for a used one of those, and I'm with Tracey, in that Chelsea really needs to have it investigated for mechanical soundness by a competent person, and needs to think about how much the conversion to a mobile hair studio will cost. A friend had a similar van converted into a mobile pet grooming salon, so the electricity and water concerns can be overcome, but I imagine that's not super cheap to do.

I was first thinking 'trailed horsebox' but then I realised it is one of those all in ones, (which may well have some basic electric and water in them too? as horsey people sleep in them when taking their horse to events?)

My grandparents left money to care for a learning disabled daughter, with provision for it to go on to my mother and another beneficiary after she died. When she died the solicitors who had been looking after the disabled daughter's affairs were dead keen for the beneficiaries to put a hefty sum in trust for the charity which ran the home she had been in, and in which the solicitor in question just happened to be a trustee. Natch, he also proposed to be a trustee for the trust sum.

As they had been charging through the nose for their work whilst the daughter was alive and for probate work, and were revealed to have cocked up quite seriously in terms of one aspect of their work, my mother and the other beneficiary had no difficulty in saying no thanks, they'd make their own arrangements when it came to charity donations.

Assuming they were properly made wills - and there is no reason to believe otherwise - each will will have made arrangements for what was to happen if the primary beneficiary predeceased them - presumably that the estate should go to @echt and siblings. There wouldn't be any complications at all.

JudyCoolibar · 11/02/2026 11:24

I really don't understand why Chelsea can't just go off and work for a time in a hair dressing salon, and/or make an arrangement where she effectively rents a chair in one. We're constantly told how good she is, surely a competent hairdresser would snap her up and would promote her in order to keep her?

I don't honestly understand how the horse box thing works. Surely she needs to have access to a very reliable supply of hot water and drainage? Wouldn't she need to get a toilet put in? Or is this one of those half-arsed arrangements where she's vaguely hoping to rely on someone else's goodwill to hook up to their facilities?

JudyCoolibar · 11/02/2026 11:28

I guess there's potentially an interesting moral dilemma coming up for George. If he has good reason to think Markie's sidekick is wrongly accused, then letting him take the blame is similar to the situation when he wanted to make Alice take the blame for his own crimes.

Equally the true culprit is morally no better than George, assuming s/he knows someone else has been charged with the offence.

OrphanBlankly · 11/02/2026 11:42

I guess their argument would be that any sensible hairdressing job would necessarily take Chelsea out of Ambridge all day, every working day. So she’d probably have to be on Borchester, and maybe wouldn’t have a steady flow of Ambridge residents as customers, so wouldn’t be in the thick of things.

It would be a rubbish argument. The erasure of Borchester as another Ambridge hub has narrowed the scope of the story so much. We used to have Underwoods, Jaxx, Ambridge Organics, Borchester Magistrates Court, Borchester College - probably other venues I’ve forgotten - and things felt so much airier and more in touch with the real world when Ambridge people interacted in all those places. What happened in Borchester affected life in the village, and vice versa. Now we just have the charging station.

It’s such a shame.

bloodredfeaturewall · 11/02/2026 11:51

did martha say something to george a la 'keira said...' which made him made his hasty retreat?
