Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that like George you like your steak very well done, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Mulligan mostly makes me think of John Finnemore's Souvenir Show. This is good, and tenuously connected to a recent TA storyline

Over to you!

@Agapornis He gets plenty of treats. He's well fed. He's clever and can open doors. I'll find that he does things like open the door, steal a lick-e-lix from the cupboard, sneak under the sofa and chew his way into the tube. He's now curled up in the laundry basket.

I should rehome him, because someone would love him. He's really cute.

He's now got up and is lurking by my feet. Both have had chunks of puff pastry from my dinner. DCat is breathing all over me with her stinky breath.

ChersHeart · 16/11/2025 14:22

@EBearhug , true about the contacts. Freddie could have asked any of the Archers, the Aldridges, Lilian, Aunt Camilla, Vince etc, while George could only count on Clarrie or Susan, who would have asked Oliver and Bridge Farm.
Freddie is pleasant but George isn't, and Neil, Oliver and Bridge Farm would have turned him down.
George got on well with Martyn Gibson, might that have potential?

I suppose it will be a couple of years before “old Amber” explains why she stepped down after a few months. I don’t think it can have been planned because it feels to me as if they are hastily rewriting the back-story and not doing it very well.

Am I losing my marbles, or did “old Amber” not work for her parents at an agricultural merchants? I felt certain that she had a salaried job when she first arrived on the Grundy’s doorstep.
Didn’t we also conclude that she now looks very unlike she did at school where she might/might not have been bullied?

Now that we have learned that her mother is “moneyed”, sending her to the local comp with her iffy eyes and dodgy teeth and bad clothing seems odd.

I don’t recall Brian ever mentioning gout? I’ve rather lost track of who might be going to Scotland…

I’ve also wondered why the shop can’t move to the cricket pavilion and why Rex can’t help with any of the farming babysitting in lieu of taxi driving.

Bruisername · 16/11/2025 17:00

I’m surprised it hasn’t been suggested that the ship move to grey gables because the guests would love it 🙄

ChersHeart · 16/11/2025 17:12

@Madcats , I think where the SW/Casting are going is that Geowurge is such a sexist pig that he hasn't realised that Amber is sounding and behaving differently, but not only has she had a personality transplant, is a completely different person. His immediate family are so determined to make Geowurge happy they've either not noticed or are turning a blind eye.

Old Amber worked at the agricultural merchants. Daddy's little princess would have been sent to a fee-paying girls' school, seen an orthodontist and worn contact lenses.

@Bruisername , the ship could go on the fully-navigable Am. Smile

EBearhug · 16/11/2025 17:23

Amber is still working at the agricultural merchants- she mentions going to work once in a while, and would have been at work when Bill called round, had she not forgotten her lunch.

But it is not for her parents that she is working there, because Daddy owns a car dealership not one selling agricultural stuff.

Do shop assistants draw a salary, or are they waged? Back when I worked on the tills at Sainsburys I got a weekly wage, not an annual salary, but that was a long time ago.

Merlin23 · 16/11/2025 17:49

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime
Shop assistants get an hourly rate. Minimum wage up to just over £13 an hour. Amber might get commission depending on how the business works.

ChersHeart · 16/11/2025 17:53

I hate spell check Yes, it's ship.

Or should that be shot? Ever mistakenly typed 'shit down my computer'? I know someone who did and it raised a few giggles.

On that basis she wasn't a salaried employee, I suppose. Shame! That would have made her different from any previous Grundy apart from Will, who must have had a salary rather than a wage as a gamekeeper – he was expected to work whenever he was needed at whatever time of day or night rather than being able to clock off and go home at the end of every afternoon.

What is this disorganised claptrap?

A Liz John script?

Tonight's episode made me laugh aloud; it made me super-aware that the only person in Ambridge who could hope to organise a piss-up in a brewery is probably Jakob.

They are going to need an extra room made up, aren't they; Tony won't want to share with Natasha, and vice versa. Oh, and the castle will still have to be paid for the night they are now not going to spend there – what a waste oof Peggy's money.

FizzingAda · 16/11/2025 19:57

That was a tractor load of complete manure. Losing the will to live 😵‍💫🙄

ChersHeart · 16/11/2025 20:30

Will Tony crash the MPV? Jakob could make me a coffee any time. Wink
Maybe there will be forfeits or challenges to do at the castle. Not seen Traitors, but whatever sort of things they did on Traitors.

When is the little Broedie arriving?

muddyford · 16/11/2025 21:03

Do none of the women drive? And it sounded like an electric car - bets on where they get stranded with no charging facilities!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/11/2025 21:42

I doubt they will go full Traitors. In the latest series (the Celebrity one) the first challenge involved digging their own graves and later they went back to the graveyard and one of them was buried alive (ish). There were also people caught up in nets that whizzed them up to into the treetops. Wonderful visually, not great for radio.

How does Jakob stand it? I'd have told them all where to go.

We used to drive three times a year from the south of England to the north of Scotland with a baby and toddler and two dogs. It is a long drive but not exactly going into the Outback. Can’t see why they are making such a fuss about it!

WitcheryDivine · 16/11/2025 22:35

I guess I’m the first to say how much I enjoyed Tom having his precious list thrown back in his face. F you sausage boy. Love that Natasha doesn’t give a flyer and is off anyway.

muddyford · 17/11/2025 06:23

Why is the prize bitch Hazel going? Her connection to Peggy is tenous, to say the least! Perhaps that's where Peggy's money went.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/11/2025 06:55

Long ago we met a couple in a hotel in Kintail (near Skye) who had regularly brought their car up from the South of England by Motorail to Fort William or Inverness. Sounded like a great idea. I don't think Motorail exists now.

Shula is about three hours away, close to where Ruth grew up and where, presumably, the people who went to school with her still live, and she might as well be on Mars considering how often she drops back for a weekend.
