Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to spend time with Martyn Gibson, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

In some haste as we are going out for the day. I was asked weeks ago to put I've Killed the Vicar in as the new title but I agree with more recent comments that Peggy's funeral feels like old news now. Great line, though. Sorry not to have used Markie Malarkey, though. I've settled on something that will only make sense to people who were also youngish in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Here's a clue. If a certain person appears in tomorrow's episode the title will be relevant.

Over to you!

I know it's against the rules but here are some spoilers for you:

Guide to the farming calendar: a year in the life of a British farmer | Countryfile.com

Yes, it's a joke. None of that nonsense happens in Ambridge.

Reading that makes me sad we no longer hear of any of those.
At this time of year we used to hear about the shearing, the silage making, the combines. The Archers used to have the tagline" an everyday story of country folk", no idea if it still does, but it should champion living in the countryside, not behave as if Ambridge is a West Midlands suburb.

It is now "Contemporary drama in a rural setting."

That’s a strange way of spelling ‘unmitigated shite’, Asking

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/07/2025 15:36

You mean they can't write AND they can't spell? Why on earth are they in the business of drama?

Madcats · 10/07/2025 15:39

I'm just back from my hols in what was a very chilly north-east (sods law the weather has brightened up now I am back home).

One thing we noticed was that it seemed very common to have fields with sheep AND young cows (not milkers) in them. It isn't something I have really noticed down here in Somerset. Is it because of herd/flock size?

There were a lot of tractors out in the fields where crops had not already been cut.

CrashThere · 10/07/2025 16:11

Another spoiler: Smile
Brookfield get planning permission to build a motel on their land that is adjacent to the charging station.
(Knowing how astute they are, they'll probably sell the land before doing that though.)

The motel will become a sweeping success, and Grey Gables will be used to house asylum seekers.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 10/07/2025 16:25

A motel?

Like Crossroads?

Bruisername · 10/07/2025 16:32

One with water beds or beds you can put a coin in and it vibrates

I love these spoilers. Far more entertaining than the real thing. At least we'd hear something from Brookfield. To think it used to be the heart of the programme! You'd hardly know it's still there these days.

The motel would be run by none other than Joy Orville.
The cleaning would all be done by Clarrie, Brad would be the bellboy, Lily would do the rotas, and Mick and Joy would do everything else.

Funny you should mention that.

Can you tell I've an article to write?

Not about Ambridge, but it's more interesting than TLS messaging.

I think it used to happen many years ago as the cows could eat the long grass with their long tongues but sheep nibble short grass.

Bruisername · 10/07/2025 19:05

Hay making!!

SlenderRations · 10/07/2025 19:17

Have just heard Amber for the first time. Why is her delivery so “posh”? Seems most odd

and as for “grandmother Clary” (looks for vomit emoji). Great writing

Godesstobe · 10/07/2025 19:26

Against my better judgement I listened to tonight's episode. (My excuse is I was in the kitchen and the radio was already on.).

I suggested on the previous thread that Amber and George's love affair might be genuine and lasting and that they could end up as one of Ambridge's power couples.

Maybe that is the way this is going. Under Clarrie's influence Amber might become a normal down to earth young woman, give up the excessive make up and fake tan, and really take to farming. She could end up like Jill - who I think didn't come from a rural background but gradually morphed into the perfect farmer's wife.

I'd be quite happy if that is how this SL develops. I'd like George to have a happy ending now he has served his sentence for stitching Alice up. I'm much preferring Amber to Joy as it looks as though there might be scope for her character to develop.

Gonners · 10/07/2025 20:00

Amber certainly has impressive upper body strength, doesn't she?

Nope. George is a nasty piece of work shaping up to be nastier. She's a brainless airhead who'll go along with him.

It's possible they might make a lot of money but it'll be scams and schemes and dodgy deals at other people's expense. They can be the even lower-rent version of Fagash and Matt Crawford.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 10/07/2025 20:12

I thought Amber had a job at Borchester Farm Supplies? Why is she hanging around at Grange Farm?

I can't decide which is the more loathsome - Amber or Eddie.

Bruisername · 10/07/2025 20:16

Oh it will turn out that she was fat spotty and wore glasses at school and her real name is Gertrude. She developed amber to get back at her bullies etc but deep down she’s still kind hearted Gertrude and the grundys will find and accept the real her

🙄🙄🙄

Ambridge · 10/07/2025 20:16

I just can’t take any of this seriously - Amber sounds like a posho Bright Young Thing of 25 or so from an Agatha Christie adaptation, but with 2020s slang. And waaay too old and upper crust to be George’s GF.

Gonners · 10/07/2025 20:26

I'm hoping she marries Oliver.

Godesstobe · 10/07/2025 20:31

Amber and George may not work out in the long run but I think it's being heavily sign posted that she's nicer and more vulnerable than she appeared at first.

Is it? I can't listen to her. I fast forwarded most of tonight's episode.

She's taken time off to have stress or anxiety or something. I don't think it's necessarily good policy to decide she's a good thing on the evidence in tonight's episode.

DeanElderberry · 10/07/2025 21:00

I got the impression she's taken time off work because of stress or some such and has also posted tons of pictures of herself spending the day haymaking, so have a mystic future vision of her getting the sack.
