Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to spend time with Martyn Gibson, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

In some haste as we are going out for the day. I was asked weeks ago to put I've Killed the Vicar in as the new title but I agree with more recent comments that Peggy's funeral feels like old news now. Great line, though. Sorry not to have used Markie Malarkey, though. I've settled on something that will only make sense to people who were also youngish in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Here's a clue. If a certain person appears in tomorrow's episode the title will be relevant.

Over to you!

Perhaps there was a famous actress who spelled it like that?

Lynda Bellingham?

Gonners · 14/07/2025 15:37

Lynda Belllingham wasn't famous when Lyndipops was born, though. She wasn't even born!

CrashThere · 14/07/2025 15:59

Lynda La Plante
Lynda Baron
Lynda Carter
Lynda Lee-Potter

There was a Lynda at school, and a few Kathryns, one Cathryn and several Catherines. I can't recall any Katherines, but plenty about 10 years younger than me. Plenty of Martins my age or thereabouts but I only know one Martyn.

Lynda La Hughes

ExitPursuedByABare · 14/07/2025 16:34

I had 6 Catherine’s in my year group and each was spelt differently.

Godesstobe · 14/07/2025 17:26

Also Carolyn from the 1950s vintage and Lynn.

Bruisername · 14/07/2025 17:31

Interesting- was using the ‘y’ the 60’s equivalent of names starting with ‘k’ in the twenty tens

Godesstobe · 14/07/2025 17:50

And Jayne of course.

I'm not sure if it was the equivalent of the later fashion for names starting with 'k'. I know a Kathryn and a Carolyn who would be decidedly miffed if I suggested that to them! There was a much smaller pool of names used then, so it was definitely an attempt to be a bit different (if not yooneek). I speak as someone with a very ordinary name.

Choccyp1g · 14/07/2025 17:57

There was also a fashion for changing the normal "y" on the end of a shortened name to "ie", then an "i" or two.
Nicky, to Nickie, to Nicki to Nickii to Nikki

Kathy to Kathie
Jenny became Jennie, Jenni, Jennii
It's fascinating how we think we are being different, and all end up the same.

Discussion of cheese made from Montbeliarde milk on R4 just now in relation to British alternatives to unpasteurised cheeses not being imported at the moment.

They're really struggling to find a point for Pa Malik. Although well done Azra for telling Snell to get lost.

Gonners · 14/07/2025 20:45

I'm rather fond of the Maliks. They seem to get on pretty well with each other and haven't yet fallen into the Slurry Pit of Stupidity. It's as though they've somehow drifted into the wrong soap opera.

echt · 14/07/2025 22:07

I listen to TA on my laptop via podcast and there's always the two-hander teaser for the episode. I saw "Akram bites off more than he can chew" and immediately thought of the wonderful Akram of Department Q on Netflix. Now there's a capable man.

I digress.

Oh I did like that Akram. I hope they do a series 2.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 14/07/2025 22:54

There's a reddit post about that Akram

I think what makes the show so good is that it's competence porn. You're watching cops who are very good at their jobs - and Akram really nails that,

So true.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 13/07/2025 13:18

Would Kenton immediately question it? I think that would be very out of character. Kenton and Jolene are annoying idiots most of the time but they're not unkind. I don't think Kenton would have had a moment's hesitation in agreeing that.

He might have insurance or something similar. Weren't Lovell James pressurising the staff to sell that sort of thing a couple of years ago?

JudyCoolibar · 15/07/2025 00:36

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 14/07/2025 08:55

And how does Justin square that with rewilding?

You didn't think Justin actually cared about rewilding, did you?

JudyCoolibar · 15/07/2025 00:40

I enjoyed hearing Azra continuing in the vein of Clarrie's newly discovered assertiveness. Long may it last.

But it's surely sheer insanity for Lynda to pick on a busy GP of all people to become her dogsbody?

JoelenesParrot · 15/07/2025 08:08

The Maliks are very boring. I had to abandon ship half-way through last night. Even Azra saying no to the Snell didn’t ring true as we know she will eventually be recruited and end up as the fete dogsbody in the end. Yawn.

Ambridge · 15/07/2025 08:26

Gonners · 14/07/2025 15:37

Lynda Belllingham wasn't famous when Lyndipops was born, though. She wasn't even born!

I’m not saying she’s named after LB (I don’t want to break it to people about TA not being real but, sorry….), I’m saying that in the awareness of people listening to TA there was a Lynda with a Y out there in the (ahem) real world. Lynda Snell first appeared in 1986. Lynda Bellingham was quite a well-known actress active at that time. I’m guessing that the SWs might not necessarily have thought through who she might have been named after. They might have just grabbed a name that was floating around in the zeitgeist in 1986.

In any case, it was only my random suggestion of another Lynda with a Y!

PS I am related to a Martin but also to a Martyn.

Cantsleepdontsleep · 15/07/2025 08:40

That episode left me verging on furious. Does Azra think Lynda is getting paid for any of her work on the fete? Absolutely fine for her not to get involved (and why on earth did Lynda ask her anyway), but Pa Malik seems to still have no discernible employment and is a perfect person to help - and willing to boot. So offer some respect and support (and maybe gentle teasing), not derision for his efforts. Ffs. Lynda is a pain, but she means well and without her they would have no community events (especially now harvest doesn’t seem to involve the usual recruitment of any characters spare moments).

harriethoyle · 15/07/2025 09:05

I did a catch up on the train this morning and I genuinely had to fast forward the hay making episode. Absolutely ludicrous. Amber is teeth gnashingly awful.

Choccyp1g · 15/07/2025 09:42

Akram said he met Lynda as he was coming home from WORK.

Sidebeforeself · 15/07/2025 11:56

I dont know why people are struggling to identify the poisoner. It’s Tilly Button. Its always Tilly Button.

Lalgarh · 15/07/2025 12:06

Or Amber with her meds
