Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

I’ve not listened but, if Peggy has requested another vicar officiate, that is glorious scriptwriting! I hope she personally requested it.

I was always puzzled by the dedicated window, but I was a very intermittent listener for a few years.

I would like to think that the actress (and future retirees have a lovely lunch with the editor or SW’s to give them a good steer about their inevitable downfall or demise.

@Cantsleepdontsleep , me too. Grin

@EBearhug Yes to the diphthongs, but they're still consistent once you know, and I'm guessing Pat did some Welsh at school, if nothing else.
I've no idea if it would have been taught in Pat's schooldays. I think it would have only been taught in a few schools back then.

The typo was wy. It's ŵy, but it might be wy in some online dictionaries. It wasn't a ŵy iâr on the deilen.
The plural is wyau, which is 2 diphthongs.

@Brefugee , Grin. Not Yng Ngwlad y Pethau Gwyllt or Tri Mochyn Bach?

sorry, i speak not one word of Welsh. 😄

ETA. have now used the power of Google translate. What a brilliant language!

Gonners · 15/05/2025 21:23

Where is Pat from? My father, born in the 1920s in Pembrokeshire, spoke no Welsh beyond Hello, Goodbye, Yes, No, Please, Thanks.

KnittedFerret · 15/05/2025 21:24

Online Translate isn't very good at Welsh. I typed
'Was it a hen's egg on the leaf?' and it was translated to 'What bird was on the leaf?'

KnittedFerret · 15/05/2025 21:31

No idea, Lewis is more prevalent in Mid and South Wales. The actress is from the Midlands

No idea where Pat is supposed to be from but I've lived in Wales from 1 year old( apart from university and a few years working in london)and can only say hello, I like coffee and goodnight in Welsh.
I vaguely remember a couple of Welsh lessons at primary school( I'm 61) but in top primary my teacher used to let me off them as I was good at sewing and I used to make clothes instead.
My children had to do a compulsory half GCSE in welsh but neither of them has spoken a word of it since then. They both live and work here and one went to university here.
In the latest census 17% of people in Wales could speak Welsh, the lowest percentage ever recorded. 75% of the population in Wales had no knowledge of any Welsh, either written, heard or spoken.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/05/2025 22:22

If I heard aright, Tony isn't getting any more than Helen and Tom. Brian is getting the same. I'm very suspicious about Kate's absence. Brian had clearly talked to her, but we don't know how much she's getting. Do we know about Lilian?

Also, surely the first question Rex should have asked is how much money Peggy has left for this work of art at the rewilding site? If it's another half a million job, presumably they'll be looking for something akin to the Angel of the North. The Angel of the Am?

Absolutely delighted by Helen's combined vitriol and petulance. Bring it on!

Natural artwork - interesting!!

I love that Peggy didn’t want Alan! That’s totally in character. And I love the other vicar being called Crispin. Alan being a bit petulant too!

I wish Rex would stop moaning but Lynda was manipulative and not nice

So Lynda true to character. Why do people put up with her?

Gonners · 15/05/2025 22:32

Why is Brian getting anything at all - if he is? Unless it's JennyDarling's share, which would suggest that Peggoi planned this amusing bombshell after her <on edit: Jennifer's> death. Because I don't think you can leave a legacy to a corpse.

For the first time ever, I find myself on Team Peggy!

KnittedFerret · 15/05/2025 22:40

Wouldn't the Angel of the Am need to be on Lakey Hill so it could cast it's shadow over Ambridge?

Do they have wind turbines and solar panels in Ambridge?
Maybe they could harness the power of the mighty river.

EBearhug · 15/05/2025 22:53

ŵy

Not all keyboards/character maps have the option of ŵ- my phone does (though possibly only because I enabled a Welah keyboard) - never yet found it on my laptop, so I have it saved in a text file to copy and paste if it's required for my homework. Not sure why - I can set the language settings to Welsh for Word, but it won't always correct missing accents.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 15/05/2025 22:53

Why does Gnasher have that dreadful music in the tea-room.

The SWs dragging this out aren't they? We now know Tony, Lilian and Brian got the same e-mail. Why Brian?

Kate can't possibly be the residuary beneficiary unless Peggy is setting this up deliberately to sow discord.

They certainly have solar panels at Brookfield, because Vince insisted the loan he gave to pay for them was paid back when Ben and Beth split. I think they're on a roof rather than covering fields.

Don't think we've had a wind turbine storyline.

KnittedFerret · 15/05/2025 23:10

I’m amazed that the lawyers have everyone’s email addresses. Even Henry’s?

I was executor for MIL’s estate last year and insisted on email addresses for the ten beneficiaries because I wanted proof I’d contacted them all.

echt · 16/05/2025 00:20

Thinking of Alan, I also don't get why he didn't know Crispin, and wanting particular vicars must be quite common. I'm not up to speed in CofE matters.
What I did like was his determination that the church should look its best for Piggoi. A real example of grace under pressure and in the face of disappointment. Unlike some of the beneficiaries of Peggy's will I imagine.

When my lovely MIL died, she requested a particular vicar of whom she thought highly. She was a regular church goer at her local church all her life. When my husband spoke to the vicar he turned it down. "I don't do death" were his exact words. What a tosser, and MIL thought the world of him. Angry

Back to to the resident vicar who was a woman and MIL had said she didn't want a female vicar. Quite vehement about it. My DH sat with her and she spent over two hours talking with him about his mother. The service was lovely and the vicar spoke so warmly and convincingly of MIL that while she never claimed to know MIL well, it didn't show at all. DH never regretted going against his mother's wishes.

TottersBlithely · 16/05/2025 00:38

I hope he was only claiming two thirds of his salary, if he was refusing one third of the work he should reasonably have been doing?

Amazed he could have qualified with that sort of attitude.

I get the impression people aren't queuing up to be vicars, but nowadays I would imagine funerals might be more than a third of their work, if they go to crematoria as well as conducting services in church. Fewer christenings and church weddings, these days?

I think Pat is being reinvented as a Welsh speaker.

JudyCoolibar · 16/05/2025 08:30

I don't understand why Alan was so convinced Crispin wouldn't know Peggy. She was so into the church that you can bet she insisted on long conversations with him after services, and he was probably expected to go to see her every time he visited The Laurels. Perhaps he even agreed to a memorial window.
