Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

So they turn up en masse or they don't turn up en masse?

Ooops, finger wobble there. They DON'T turn up en masse.

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle

When you say fenced off fields, do you mean with a footpath through it? Not just any old field someone fancies taking a stroll through?

Anywhere you fancy going other than the curtilage of a house- no requirement that there's a footpath.

So yes, any field you fancy walking through, including fields in crop or with animals in them, as long as it's done "responsibly"

BeaLola · 09/05/2025 18:13

Am I remembering incorrectly some storyline in the past about Peggy leaving the Lodge to Helen ???

Good. That's what I thought.

I'm fed up of Laurence and Lynda. Was she always in charge of the cricket? That scene added nothing to anything.

The problem is that Laurence is soooo nasty in every respect and that makes him dull. It'd be more interesting if he was only one out of racist, sexist, snobby, boorish and letcherous...

Sidebeforeself · 09/05/2025 18:18

St Lynda isn’t it? Only she can stand up to the bigot, only she can instantly befriend the new Asian family… It’s such a dull and unimaginative scenario.

Well I suppose he has to be irredeemably awful if the point is to make Lynda good. Not sure it worked- wouldn't want to be stuck with either of them.

Lynda was unpleasnt to Adil when he first arrived.

I imagine 300 members around the country not 300 turning up at once. That would turn heads.

I assumed 300 regulars spread between different locations and days.

Bruisername · 09/05/2025 19:15

Bloody hell -9 mins and there’s bloody Joy. Why can’t they give us a night off!!

and all such maudlin shit. Really wish I hadn’t bothered

it’s not escapism any more

DeanElderberry · 09/05/2025 19:31

But Fallon's pies.

She did. Everything to Tom apart from that. Tony was outraged, and Pat even more so on his behalf. But then Otto-the-Bull knelt on Tony and he was in a coma for months, and Peggy had a change of heart and altered her will to leave everything divvied three ways among her three children. And I hope she has updated it since Jennifer's death, or the editorial team has a lot of scope for messing about.

Bruisername · 09/05/2025 19:40

I guess her will could have taken into account a child pre deceasing and it going to those grandkids. I know my parents will does

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/05/2025 19:41

My parents' did too, but this is TA and they do just love a pointless melodrama (with needless conflict) these days.

Bruisername · 09/05/2025 19:44

Very true

but at this stage it wouldn’t surprise me if Peggy left it all to Joy🙄

No need to update, will would have provision for what happens re predeceasing beneficiaries.

And what was all that sentimental nonsense from Emma? Wasn't Peggy horrible to Emma?

Oh Lynda, I take back everything I said about you. That fair put Gnasher's gas at a peep. And Gnasher's suggestions sounded rubbish for a cricket tea.

I admit the recording at the end was sweet- a nice send off. It's highly implausible it would exist, but that was a nice touch.

You're assuming Usha wasn't involved, then?

When June Spencer said, shortly after she officially retired from the programme, that she had recorded her last contribution to The Archers, I assumed that she meant she had recorded something to be broadcast after her death. So I was sort-of anticipating something like that. It's a bit of a shame that it was so unmemorable that my brain has already erased it!

It was the poem Peggy read out on New Year's Eve 2020.

Synopsis: "As the bells finish their chime Peggy is reading: we hear some verses of 'Ring out wild bells', with lacunae. There is cheering when she finishes with the penultimate verse ('Ring out old shapes of foul disease') and the words 'a thousand years of peace'.

So they may well already have had the whole thing recorded back then, and have played it without the Noises Off this time.

Saw this, thought of TA …

We were birdwatching. A man yelled, ‘Go back to your own country’

Disgusting behaviour.

echt · 09/05/2025 22:39

When they mentioned individual beef pies in tonight's episode, all I could think of the was the mushroom poisoning trial going on here in Victoria. The accused made individual beef Wellingtons - all the better to poison youand not me with my dear.

Yes she was .. but it was a way of introducing her to the family who she instinctively bonded with..

Not sure what your point is- was she atoning for being horrible to Adil?
