Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

" What I want to know is why Chelsea is working in two cafes instead of a hair salon".

My neighbour is a hairdresser. She doesn't work out of a salon but works from home and also goes to clients homes. It seems quite lucrative - in the last 12 months she's been on holiday to Mexico and Thailand plus assorted long weekend breaks to Spain and the Canary Islands. She has a cleaner several times a week and uses quite an expensive meal delivery service because she said she hates meal planning & shopping so selects what she fancies from a Web site and it all arrives in a box.

It's certainly better than working for minimum wage in a cafe.

That times article shows how odd people can be - surely nature is the greatest leveller

however the walking into a remote pub and everyone hushing and staring at you has happened to me! I always thought that was just an outsiders thing

Choccyp1g · 09/05/2025 09:38

But everywhere in the Lakes is full of outsiders all year round also known as tourists.

Bruisername · 09/05/2025 09:56

I know - that’s why I was surprised

Laurence was only there to make Lynda look good. Total waste of time. Hopefully this is the last we hear from him

i fear we are setting up a racist/bullying storyline here.

I feel like we already had that and Lynda has triumphantly put him in his place

theres no reason for Laurence to hang around making nasty comments now his team has played the years match in ambridge

Brefugee · 09/05/2025 10:06

not sure - the whole exclusiion from the WA group, and "seeing if you are one of us". Maybe a men vs women thing?

Shameful behaviour.

What was said was shameful

The article said With 300 members now joining us on our regular walks. Do they mean they have 300 members? Or literally 300 people turn up ?

In Scotland all countryside is available for walking - hills, farms, fenced off fields. I think a mass group of 300 people is bit off tbh. I don't think my brother would be particularly welcoming of 300 people en masse walking through his farm.

I'm fed up of Laurence and Lynda. Was she always in charge of the cricket? That scene added nothing to anything.

Gonners · 09/05/2025 10:52

Was Old Robert (RIP) in charge of the cricket?

Lynda should be put in charge of something nobody wants or needs to get involved with, and left to boss herself around. Ghastly woman!

You do need some capital to set up though, as you need equipment and supplies. That might be a barrier but even considering that I'm surprised Chelsea doesn't do a bit more hair/makeup/nails etc.

I mean she could put hair up for posh events and do make up using the clients products. The hunt ball and school proms would give her some business.

MorningCoffeePlease · 09/05/2025 12:41

I had to listen to that bit again in disbelief, but I distinctly heard Lynda say "if the criteria is withheld..." The Lynda I picture would never make a grammatical error like that.

MorningCoffeePlease · 09/05/2025 12:46

Regarding Hilda, she may have felt unwell as her end was approaching and gone away to a secluded spot to die. (Hope not, as I like her!)

They probably only accept people who will join in their vile misogynistic and racist banter.

I seem to recall that Christine's son took over paying for her care after a while... (does anyone else)?

I'm looking forward to the potential arguments about inheritance.

Who bought The Lodge after it was put on the market? I don't think we've heard about that?

I do, because I think it was mentioned that, when he found out about the situation, Christine's adopted son Peter took over the payments for her care.

We were not told who had bought The Lodge, only that someone had and would not have welcomed Hilda coming in through the cat-flap.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/05/2025 13:15

Gonners · 09/05/2025 08:37

Surely Hilda must be the cat-equivalent of about 150 years old by now?

Hilda was a second-hand cat in May 2017, so she might not yet even be ten years old; it depends on how quickly her first owner, Fabrice, got shot of her.

I imagine 300 members around the country not 300 turning up at once. That would turn heads.

No, she wasn't. She was elected to the Chair in 2024. Robert canvassed for her because he did not want the position; she canvassed for him because she thought he ought to have it.

The editorial team have invented yet another futile point of strife, competition about cricket teas. I was very glad when Lynda came back with the line about learning how to win at cricket first!

She did say the criteria is, but maybe she was thoroughly rattled and so made a mistake she never would make normally. Or maybe Sarah Hehir made it, which seems somehow more likely.

IHeartHalloumi · 09/05/2025 15:35

Does anyone else think Hilda may have snuggled into the base of the VE day beacon and been accidentally toasted? They will have to rake out the remains of the wood and could find a little kitty corpse..

FizzingAda · 09/05/2025 15:53

I'm in Scotland, I had heard of this group, they are all over the country, so they turn up en masse. Much like most walking or birdwatching groups, small meets.

DeanElderberry · 09/05/2025 16:06

Sorry to refer to another board, but old MLers here who haven't already seen the news may be sad, as I am, that Peter F has gone from this world.

BeatriceBatchelor · 09/05/2025 16:07

I'm partial to an oat latte but agree with pp that I can't see Adam or Ian joining me.

ExitPursuedByABare · 09/05/2025 16:38

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle

When you say fenced off fields, do you mean with a footpath through it? Not just any old field someone fancies taking a stroll through?

Probably not, no.
