Series 1, Episode 1 - Abu Dhabi. Not sure how many series they are going to schedule.

A cat, a thermostat and Bristol combine in the ups and downs of a tiny charter airline.

I tried to listen to Cabin Pressure, I really did, but honestly the canned laughter did my fkn head in and I gave up.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/01/2025 18:26

It's not canned. It was recorded in front of a live audience in the BBC Radio Theatre. I tried to get tickets and was unsuccessful, but we did manage to get to a few recordings of the Souvenir Programme.

@Chersfrozenface , you just start again.

😂😂😂

Very true, I listen to it every night as I have the episodes on Audible.

Once I've finished Cabin Pressure, does anyone have any recommendations for other radio comedies?

I would be most grateful.

Old Harry's Game is very funny. I also recommend Charles Paris starring Bill Nighy.

Okay.....the laughter may have been more spontaneous in a live setting, that wouldn't be too bad. Look I know laughter is part of it, but I found it so intrusive on Sounds, and I didn't find it THAT funny that the audience was cackling and laughing every minute or so. Live and played back probably a different vibe though for sure.

Maybe I just don't like comedy though and should try something else instead!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/01/2025 18:34

I have the impression that by the later episodes Benedict Cumberbatch was so famous, thanks to Sherlock, that a lot of tickets were taken by young women and girls who were there largely for him.

Yup. Sherlock blew up after the first few serieses of Cabin Pressure, so suddenly you had this situation where BC was a MEGASTAR but still signed up to do this relatively small and low key R4 comedy, and tickets for the live recordings went hens-teeth.

I think there was a worry that the "new audience" wouldn't appreciate Cabin Pressure but they clearly did.

I love this bit from Paris. Clearly a reference to Sherlock

DOUGLAS: Any progress?
MARTIN: I don’t think he has it.
DOUGLAS: How can you tell?
MARTIN: Pretty certain. But, um, it’s just impossible. He didn’t take it; I didn’t take it; you couldn’t have taken it, and there’s no-one else except Arthur, so how ... Oh!
DOUGLAS: You’re not thinking ...
MARTIN: Well, I know it seems crazy, but ...
DOUGLAS: Arthur?!
MARTIN: I know! But the thing is, we’ve taken away all the things that can possibly have happened, so I suppose the only thing that’s left, even though it seems really weird, must be the thing that did happen, in fact.
DOUGLAS: Snappily put

There's Tom Wrigglesworths hang ups

Some episodes are on BBC sounds.

About a son and his regular phone calls to his parents. Very funny

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 25/01/2025 18:59

Seconding Tom Wrigglesworth. Slightly more low key audience laughter I think @VonHally

Nick Revell's Broken Dreamcatcher series doesn't have any audience laughter at all. A bit marmite but I love it.

Charles Paris is brilliant, and definitely doesn't have any audience laughter because it's comedy drama mystery with no audience. There's a new series starting on Monday, and one series (A Doubtful Death) still available on Sounds.

When I have insomnia problems I swear by Just a Minute and The Unbelievable Truth, because they're absorbing and light hearted but they don't have a plot so there's no pressure to stay awake or keep track and I don't have to backtrack to the last bit I remember the next night.

Chersfrozenface · 25/01/2025 19:07

Thank you all. I am noting these.

Hut 33

RhinestoneCowgirl · 25/01/2025 19:12

I can recommend Melvin Bragg's In Our Time for insomnia, works a treat 😁

Love Cabin Pressure, thanks for the reminder that it's on Sounds.

Hut 33

I wonder what Olivia Coleman thinks of her role in that?

Olivia Coleman is amazing in Hut 33.

Madcats · 25/01/2025 20:10

Hut 33 deserves another recommendation. I'm not sure how easy it is to track down, but we enjoyed Bleak Expectations and Clare in the Community.

DH suggested Ed Reardon's week.

You can get Green Wing on Audible (but it probably helps to have watched the TV Series first).

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 25/01/2025 20:39

I knew there was something I'd forgotten. Bleak Expectations is amazing. It's not on Sounds at the moment, but they repeat it quite regularly, so keep an eye out.

VonHally · 25/01/2025 20:41

@GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia Thanks for the recommendations for low laughter emissions 😉I've subscribed and will listen another time.

I was thrilled to find something else that I know I will really like when doing the search for Broken Dreamcatcher - something called Broken English about a couple whose dream move to France is destroyed when their son goes missing. Not a comedy obv, but serendipity! Thanks..

Minka is brilliant in Hut 33, just don’t cross her…

cakeorwine · 28/01/2025 22:39

Douz is out now.

Love this one with John Sessions.

Do you want coffee?
No
Then coffee you shall not have.

What do you mean, fire truck?
I can find no better word to describe fire truck than fire truck!

The whole series is on Internet Archive. Annoyingly they're sedated out each series when it used to be all on one click of the site:

Also, all of Old Harry's Game is there too, and mercifully the whole thing is on one page:

Separated, not sedated.

I LOVE it!! It's so witty and well-written. How many series were there out of interest?

Four six-episode serieses, plus the Christmas special (Molokai) and the two-part finale (Zurich), covering every letter from A to Z.
