Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be happy sharing a hot tub with Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The title started life with @JanglyBeads, whose autocorrect turned 'Oh no, nor do I!' into 'Oh no, nododo I!' on the last thread. For reasons of cowardice/prudence/lack of inspiration and the character limit, I haven't included @BeaLola's even more mysterious autocorrect - her phone had her asking Abdul if he'd always wanted children instead of Neil. Grin Perhaps one of the mooted beavers can be Abdul.

For the first time ever I've added a poll to the OP. Over to you!

So much for Leonard’s purported devotion to Jill, then, if he does go. (Could this method of getting shot of a character be the Singapore Sling?)
I’d be happy to see hear the back of him.

crumpet · 09/01/2025 12:39

it’s possible I may have to rethink the stupidity of the wild beaver release storyline!

Oh and I see @Lalgarh got there before me!

What are salaries like in Singapore? The earnings requirement is only £43k per annum.

I'm surprised that the country isn't rammed full of oldies.

I think it's higher than that; the MOM website says $12,000SGD a month, which is about 85,000GBP. Not a huge number of expats earn that, often because they're on a total package worth a lot more (housing, medical, schooling etc) but the wages may not seem that high. Then, as someone else said, most people don't want to move to Singapore just because their adult child has moved there, it's hot, small, and not everyone's cup of tea!
But also yes, the country is rammed full of oldies!

SaffyRosie · 09/01/2025 13:44

I noticed several of the characters who are supposed to be well educated using poor grammar.

Last night it was Leonard using me instead of I. And I think David also is guilty along with several others. Ex "me and Frank". Leonard is a character, supposedly with a good education, who went to a middle tier university using bad grammar.

Come on script writers this is basic stuff!

Who inherits glebe?

Elizabeth and Shula.

LillianGish
Hard to imagine relocating to Singapore without ever having visited first

Leonard has visited Singapore, and found it fantastic; he waxed lyrical about it to David.

Bruisername · 09/01/2025 17:04

All these villagers who are landlords and seem to have no issues at all. I’m an accidental landlord with excellent tenants but it’s still a pain in the backside

TottersBlankly · 09/01/2025 17:44

Perhaps transfer of ownership of Glebe Cottage might be what tempts Dan back?

And how does Shula manage all her professional hand wringing whilst owning half the midlands? Intellectually, I mean.

Fink · 09/01/2025 18:30

And how does Shula manage all her professional hand wringing whilst owning half the midlands? Intellectually, I mean.

I was at the British Museum's Silk Roads exhibition today. There was a manuscript labelled: 'Arabic deed of sale for a Nubian woman named Shu‘la, detailing her scars but declaring she is physically fit. Ca. 850-930 CE.'

It goes without saying that I wouldn't wish slavery on anyone (and in any case, I really like Shula), but I was pleased to see that she was declared fit. Sadly there were no identifiable Archers listeners around to share my amusement, so I saved it for here.

Bankholidayhelp · 09/01/2025 19:14

Dear god.

Sidebeforeself · 09/01/2025 19:16

@Fink Oh that must have been really annoying that you weren’t able to share it at the time! I have loads of jokes and witty observations that I have to keep to myself

WagnersFourthSymphony · 09/01/2025 19:20

I somehow doubt there's a vacancy in the local Armed Response Unit, or whatever they're called. It's going to be some kind of youth liaison work, isn't it.
Oh dear.

And the Leonard SL, how can a man of his age be so easy to manipulate?

muddyford · 09/01/2025 19:24

Ruth's "Wrap up warm" had me gnashing my teeth. 'Warmly 'dear, 'warmly'.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 09/01/2025 19:25

I've been trying to remember why Phil & Jill gave their twins such unusual names, but apparently they threw alphabet blocks into the air!? A tradition, then, of SWs being a bit maverick.

Ruth's "Wrap up warm" had me gnashing my teeth. 'Warmly 'dear, 'warmly'.

That worried me less than the instruction to a fully functioning adult.

Ficklemind · 09/01/2025 19:34

I find Leonard enjoyable to listen to one day and irritating the next 🤷🏻‍♀️

Gonners · 09/01/2025 19:35

All my mother's family (North Notts) would have said "Wrap up warm". It's called colloquial language. I wouldn't say it, mainly because it's not part of my dialect but also because I don't care if Leonard freezes. Indeed, after tonight's let-down I rather hope he does!

Off-topic, I was faffing around sorting out old paperwork for shredding this afternoon while half-listening to old Father Brown broadcasts on 4-Extra and one of them (from 1985) included Graham Blockey playing a very Scottish policeman!

DeanElderberry · 09/01/2025 19:39

I hope Harrison is needed for a Borsetshire police liaison officer in the Falklands post. Not that I want the penguins to suffer unduly.

Yes, the people around me were loudly sharing an inside joke about a cup carved with a rat's head. I was slightly miffed that my moment of amusement had to be solitary. But generally I prefer exhibitions alone; other people always get irritated at how long I take.

Quite. What business is it of theirs what Leonard does - where he lives or what he wears? They are behaving like he's their pet.

And that!

DeanElderberry · 09/01/2025 19:47

I do like the idea of Jill and Leonard cuckooing their way into Brookfield. I also hope that Kirsty decides against beaver introduction but that someone, unknown to anyone in Ambridge introduces a few of those lynxes and that they manage to first drive David mad when he thinks they're beavers, then kill and eat him when he gets too close.

Without anyone knowing theydunnit, they can blame David for running away but we will know because we'll have heard the sound effects in all their yogurt-soaked-teatowel half-coconut-shell gory glory.

And that then they are captured and relocated somewhere they'll be able to live happy lynx lives (the Pyrenees maybe).

So much better and more realistic and satisfactory than what the SWs have been giving us.

But wouldn't that be the north-east usage?

Madcats · 09/01/2025 19:58

If Kirsty and Rex are thwarted in their beaver endeavour (as they should be) I hope they nip down to the Forest of Dean and relocate some wild pigs

Yes, but Pip, not David.

I've never thought about 'Wrap up warm' before. Yes, I suppose it should be 'warmly' but that doesn't sound right, somehow. My mother would probably still say it to me, and I regard myself as fully functioning.
