Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be happy sharing a hot tub with Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The title started life with @JanglyBeads, whose autocorrect turned 'Oh no, nor do I!' into 'Oh no, nododo I!' on the last thread. For reasons of cowardice/prudence/lack of inspiration and the character limit, I haven't included @BeaLola's even more mysterious autocorrect - her phone had her asking Abdul if he'd always wanted children instead of Neil. Grin Perhaps one of the mooted beavers can be Abdul.

For the first time ever I've added a poll to the OP. Over to you!

That information is incorrect, as the official Singaporean government website shows: the Dependant's Pass is only for children under 21 or spouses, not parents. However, there is another way, using a Long Term Visit Pass, if Simon's income is sufficient, or if he's acquired Singaporean citizenship then he could bring his dad over as a permanent resident. I can't remember what he does for a living, but I remember David hinting that it was well-paid, so I assume he'd be ok with the LTVP. The person I knew who wanted to try it was a freelancer, so would explain why it wasn't an option.

If you click through the links you get to Long Term Visa Pass information , which I'd mentioned in my post at 20:44

Police investigating the illegal release of two lynx in Scotland. Will that be plan b for Kirsty?

stilldumdedumming · 08/01/2025 22:32

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle Whoa! That kind of in-depth research will get you seat at the SW table! I'll put in a good word for you 😉

stilldumdedumming · 08/01/2025 22:34

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I meant that in good humour by the way (there's a slightly tense vibe!)

WombatCowgirl · 08/01/2025 22:37

@Bruisername yes if she wants to get rid of the beavers in an "all natural" manner!

I expect I did more research than the SWs did.

It would be a hoot if Jill wants to go, they have to get married, Jill dies, Leonard inherits her share of Brookfield (does she have a share?) Leonard dies too (which would be a shame as he would be missed, he's not on my cull list) and Simon inherits from Leonard.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/01/2025 22:47

Jill no longer has a share in Brookfield: she and Phil were bought out with the money to buy Glebe Cottage, to get which money a field was sold (probably) or else Phil discovered he personally owned one of the fields and sold it. She gets a pension from the farm until her death, I think.

Bruisername · 08/01/2025 22:57

Who inherits glebe?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 08/01/2025 22:58

Bruisername · 08/01/2025 22:57

Who inherits glebe?

Who lives in Glebe ?

Bruisername · 08/01/2025 23:07

Is it the herbal tea lady?

Sussurations · 08/01/2025 23:56

Yes, Carol Tregorran, we never hear anything about her nowadays. Nor Jill saying the word ‘Glebe’ and making it sound more irritating than one would believe possible.

BeaLola · 09/01/2025 00:56

Well if Leonard does goes that is definitely it for Jill, maybe Ruth will spring her "but you can stay here for ever" Leonard campaign tomorrow and he will be torn (briefly) between Jill & Singapore .... I will miss Leonard.

Nettleteaser101 · 09/01/2025 04:51

But wait, didn't Leonard say his son was telling him about his new girlfriend. So if Leonard goes to live with Jason and things progress with said girl friend and they want to move in together, won't Leonard be in the way. I think Jason should have thought things through before very lovingly asking his dad to move in.
I hope David,Ruth and Jill ask Leonard to move in with them as I'm a Leonard fan.
I don't think we will hear anymore about the little girl and her posh accent and at the end of the day who cares.

BeatriceBatchelor · 09/01/2025 06:30

I think Jason should have thought things through before very lovingly asking his dad to move in.

Simon probably said "Pa, you must come and live with me in Singapore. I insist!" and will now be thinking "oh shit!" when Leonard agrees.

Ficklemind · 09/01/2025 06:50

So are the SW's planning that Jill dies in her bed at Brookfield or on a foreign field?
I would guess at Brookfield on the eve of her and Leonard's planned departure to Singapore - or is that a bit naff? 😄

Ficklemind · 09/01/2025 06:59

MereDintofPandiculation Flowers

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle Simon possibly inheriting part of Brookfield! What a thought!

TottersBlankly · 09/01/2025 07:34

This generation of SWs don’t seem to like on-air deaths, so I’ve been worrying about Jill’s trip to see Shula. It’s a bit Jenny + Lilian at the spa hotel …

Realistically, it sounds as if the possibility of grandchildren is closer for Leonard now, so one can see why he’d want to go. I daresay he’ll ask Jill to go with him - but she won’t.

Ulelia · 09/01/2025 07:58

Can confirm it will be an LTVP for Leonard in Singapore, I know a few people who've done it (I live there and yes, its sweaty). You have to earn quite a lot to sponsor an LTVP but as Simon is in risk management he will do.
I also thought the girls accent was jarring with the story line setting!

Right, back to lurking.

don't be daft! that kind of factual information would have anyone banned from the Writers Room immediately if not sooner.
As my GP said to me when i told him about my mum a few months ago (not in the UK) - bring her over. There is always a way.

LillianGish · 09/01/2025 08:24

Last night’s episode was a breath of fresh air - a three-hander, outside Ambridge, for the funeral of someone we didn’t know should have been an instant turn-off. Paul Copley is such a fantastic actor - it just shows what a difference that can make. Very sorry to think we might be losing him, but I’ve never thought he could realistically stay on after the departure of Jill (and she has already departed to all intents and purposes). He doesn’t have any purpose or link to Ambridge apart from her. Hard to imagine relocating to Singapore without ever having visited first, but maybe the thought of dying alone in a chair undiscovered for three weeks is enough of a push.

It would be an uncanny repeat of how Heather died. I can imagine all the Brookfield children in therapy trying to process two grannies dying in transit! They'd be terrified to let David and Ruth make plans to set foot outside the farmhouse ever again.

Brefugee · 09/01/2025 08:25

i was thinking, when it started "oh this is going to be tedious" and in the end it was lovely.

As for why Ben and David - surely to share the driving?

Madcats · 09/01/2025 10:30

What are salaries like in Singapore? The earnings requirement is only £43k per annum.

I'm surprised that the country isn't rammed full of oldies.
