Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you fancy Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The scars from Scambridge week will take some healing. Most of us felt we were the ones scammed - where was The Archers we know and (very occasionally) love?

Anyway, onwards and - almost certainly not - upwards. Will it be the best Christmas ever in Ambridge? Do we still care? Over to you!

John hadn’t actually inherited anything by the time of his death and so, in my experience, any ‘share’ would have died with him Wills usually have a clause saying “if any of my kids predecease me, their share of the loot goes to their children”. Which backs up your suggestion that the default is for the “share” to die with the intended recipient.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 31/12/2024 11:59

John hadn’t actually inherited anything by the time of his death and so, in my experience, any ‘share’ would have died with him. Unless P and T wanted to arrange things otherwise.

Most jurisdictions provide on intestacy that if a child has died before the deceased that that child’s children will take the share their parent would have taken. (Per stirpes principle) Here P&T can provide in their will that that should happen. It would be very unfair not to.

Was John on johnnys birth certificate?

KnittedFerret · 31/12/2024 12:08

Highly unlikely. John died before Johnny was born.

He couldn't have been but it's irrelevant.

Bruisername · 31/12/2024 12:10

Yes - I suppose you can only put dad down if you are married?

but they only found out about him fairly recently?

Bruisername · 31/12/2024 12:15

Wouldn’t put it past Helen to demand a DNA test if she felt threatened!! Now that would set the cat amongst the pigeons. I am always amazed at how much shit her parents will accept from her

Of course he could. He died about 5 months before his son was born.

Talking of dying, ought we to have a 2025 dead pool?

Brian, almost certainly, but I wonder whether they are working up to a double deading of Brian and Neil within a short space of time. That would have lots of interesting possibilities - how Chris and Alice fare when both are grieving (Alice won’t be able to lean on him the way she does as a rule, and it wouldn’t be reasonable to expect Susan to do the heavy lifting either). George never seeing his grandfather again (if they could also polish off ruddy Bartleby while they’re at it that would be splendid). Emmur maybe actually blaming George for Neil’s death? Chris blaming Emma… And all the inevitable squabbling between the Brian and Jenny’s ghastly broods.

Also, is Peggy going to ‘live’ forever? It’s about time they bit the bullet on that one.

Of course he could. He died about 5 months before his son was born.

No he can't. He, like any other unmarried father, can only be on the birth certificate if he jointly registered the birth with Sharon. Which he obviously didn't do as he didn't even know about the pregnancy.

KnittedFerret · 31/12/2024 12:36

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle , of course he wasn't on the birth certificate. He would have needed to be with Sharon when she registered the birth, which, being dead and buried, he couldn't be.

Your post came across as being rude and dismissive, which might have not been your intention. I'm not the first to comment about your tone.

I wish someone had pointed out that it’s actually Tom and Natasha who have forced the issue here. Helen has no choice but to think about her future now they are buying her home . Not like me to defend Helen, but I do think Pat and Tony should acknowledge what’s behind this.

the super obvious answer is, of course:
Tom and Natasha move into the Beechwood house
Helen and the boys move into Bridge Farmhouse
Pat and Tony move into wherever it is Tom and Natasha are currently living (which i forget but CBA to check because that lot sap my will to live)

Rochelle is annoying me greatly. She is acting like a sulky teenager not an adult woman.

ETA i live in the land of the Passivhaus. And i also live in a town which has had to relocate at least 5 (maybe more, I've lost count) from the north side of town (being consumed by an open-cast lignite mine) to the other side of town. Each of the existing villages also has had a large programme of building (in 10 years, simply due to new houses the population of our village has gone up from 994 to 1,500). Lots of people "build" a passivhaus (many actually build their own). The Passivhaus is modular and comes on trucks and is built in a matter of days. The last one to be put up here was done and dusted and the family were in it for Christmas - they actually "broke ground" on 7th October. That is normal for those houses. I'm not sure Pat has any clue what a Passivhaus actually is.

Your post to which I replied came across as rude and dismissive. "Of course he could" were your words- rudely and incorrectly dismissing another post.

There is no "of course" about it.

KnittedFerret · 31/12/2024 12:58

My post in reply to your rude post was rude? @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle .
What did you expect?

@Brefugee , Pat and Tony move into wherever it is Tom and Natasha are currently living (which i forget but CBA to check because that lot sap my will to live)
Tom and Natasha are renting a smallish house (not an Executive Home). Why should Pat & Tony move there? Why would they?

Answer: because Helen wants them to?

bloodredfeaturewall · 31/12/2024 13:16

regarding passiv house: surely tony would like strawbales & lime plaster type of thing.

tbh I would like them to build a huf-style 1-bed bungalow. no chance of helen taking that over with her boys.

EBearhug · 31/12/2024 13:30

I'm leaning towards Joy having been a high class madam before coming to Ambridge. That would explain her apparent affluence and her desire to bury herself away where none of her previous clients would recognise her.

Nah, I thought.

But then I asked the friend I'm currently with. He has taught in public schools for much of this century. "Oh, definitely at least two in the current school. And I think at least three in the previous one. You can tell by the accent, and they're always way over-dressed."

So maybe...

That’s snobbery at its finest!

I think the pp was referring to Emma Barnett

RegimentalSturgeon · 31/12/2024 13:50

Don’t think they’re mentioned in the talk guidelines. And I can’t imagine it would apply in the case of fictional characters in a moribund radio soap.

TottersBlanklyBoundInTinsel · 31/12/2024 14:10

Rex would never say ‘check that her and Mick are still coming’. Angry

BeaLola · 31/12/2024 14:22

Perhaps Tony and Pat will "chat" to Brian about how to split the farm - he had a rather more complicated structure to deal with

From my earlier comment about Jonnie coming back and Pat&Tony splitting 3 ways I appreciate Jonnie is a grandchild but he is Johns son and they think the world of him - perhaps he may end up with 1/5 and Helen and Tom get 2/5 each - I just can't see them leaving Jonnie out of a legacy ?

I wonder if Rochelle will let everything out at the party in terms of why she and Joy were estranged

I was actually thinking of Cynthia Payne whose son was privately educated I think. In the film of her life - Personal Services from memory - Madame Cyn was played by Julie Walters and I can absolutely see Joy in that role.

See also Mrs Warren's Profession - although Mrs Warren is not so much a dead ringer for Joy.

If Emma Fraud is on here, Sunningdale is in Berkshire not Surrey.

Some of Sunningdale (Broomhall in particular) was in Surrey when the Snells were living there. They moved to Ambridge in 1986, and the border between Berkshire and Surrey was moved in 1995 in what was called a "rationalisation" to include the whole of Sunningdale.

KnittedFerret
The house is unlikely to be split, but the business should be.
Pat and Tony are in their 70s, so should have thought of this already.

They made the business into a partnership a long time ago, 2009 I think; the partners are Pat, Tony, Helen and Tom. Bad luck Johnny.

Not until he starts to say "check that her is coming".

(That's not a construction I have heard even in dialect, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell me that it is what they say where whoever-it-is comes from.)
