Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you fancy Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The scars from Scambridge week will take some healing. Most of us felt we were the ones scammed - where was The Archers we know and (very occasionally) love?

Anyway, onwards and - almost certainly not - upwards. Will it be the best Christmas ever in Ambridge? Do we still care? Over to you!

Does anyone actually like Helen? I mean as a listener, not as an Ambridge resident (I know she in inexplicably friends with lovely Kirsty and kindly Ian).

I remember her being annoying as a teen, petty and vindictive to Hailey after John's death, whiny and annoying to her parents, a lying cheat to her mother whiler shagging a married man, faintly redeemed by the coercive control plot line and a reverting to sanctimonious cowbag to most people. And dumped Lee for no discernable reason (not that he was a loss to Ambridge).

And backing out of a house sale just because her friend didn’t let her keep the curtains.

OverArmour · 14/12/2024 17:23

I don’t think I’d let Mick babysit my kids either.

The landlord remains liable for wear and tear so it’s Kirsty’s responsibility and only right that the cost of remediation should be taken into account when negotiating the process

Twenty thousand pounds' worth of wear and tear in three years? Strewth.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g
Did she say she was a churchgoer or was she agonising about what she and Robert should do 'as Christians'? I thought she said the latter, but my memory is fallible, as so often demonstrated on these threads.

Alan said confidently that he would see her on Sunday as usual, I think.

She told Tony that she couldn't help finding Beechwood suburban and that was why she didn't want to buy that house.

EBearhug · 14/12/2024 20:02

I mostly don't like Helen as a person, but I think she's great as a character, and well-acted.

DeanElderberry · 14/12/2024 20:52

hen is horrible always has been.

I am very taken by the idea of Shula coming back with a different actress. I've always liked Shula, even when the SWs did awful things with her - I still remember the innocent pre-AIDS days when she and Caroline happily shagged their way through the Simons (etc) of Borsetshire.

DeanElderberry · 14/12/2024 20:54

Oh, and thank you @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g for the new thread.

Gonners · 14/12/2024 21:01

Well I dislike a great many of them, for a wide variety of reasons ... and the ones I don't dislike seem generally unpopular here, with the possible exception of Jakob and the appalling but excellent Brian. I loathe Kirsty. It's partly the voice, but also the pious self-righteousness - I hope her house falls down, uninsured through negligence, without her having sold it. If Helen were inside at the time, so much the better. And Fallon has clearly had her marbles removed. I suspect I have strayed far into "wrong sort of listener" territory.

I wish Tracy and her kids - and Jazzer - well, though. And Freddie.

edited for a tiny punctuation error!

I remember that golden time, post-pill, pre-aids.
Oh happy daysnights.

RegimentalSturgeon · 14/12/2024 21:28

Why did Kirsty come back to Ambridge after being jilted at the altar (respect for that howl, though; it was almost as good as Nigel’s scream as he fell from the top of the Burj Khalifa), other than sheer masochism? I have wanted to give her a good hard slap ever since. Ideally with one of the dead fish from the Am.

Well, no the wear and tear is over the 15*years or so since the house was built

*insert exact number as inevitably clarified by @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime !

Her Christian practice has been mentioned 3 times in the last week IIRC. Both she and Alan noted that she normally attends every Sunday. I'm just not sure if this has ever been a thing before or if there's some reason her religious adherence is now being highlighted.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/12/2024 22:57

Beechwood first proposed in May 2017, land purchased June 2017, some houses built during 2018; last house finished 2019. Philip and Kirsty bought theirs in Spring 2019.

Five years, of which over three have been during Helen's occupation: she moved in during April 2021.

Madcats · 15/12/2024 09:44

Just placemarking so I can locate where to moan about the omnibus.

Didn't Lee go mad (assisted by Ian and Adam) with some substantial DIY improvements? Did Henry's room get painted black?

It is ridiculous that the house needs much work outside something that could be covered by an NHBC guarantee. Storm damage would be an insurance matter.

New carpets and a complete repaint, maybe, and possibly a day's work on the garden.

Gonners · 15/12/2024 10:03

If Helen's boyfriend and children have wrecked the walls and carpets and she hasn't maintained the garden, I don't see why she should get a discount on the price!

OMG, I so have to get back in with ex's parents, as they live near Brian somewhere!

ExitPursuedByABare · 15/12/2024 10:49

At least Gavin’s consumption has abated.

Wouldn’t it be a bit creepy if Kirsty and he got together. Having been married to his father?

Madcats · 15/12/2024 11:59

Don't tenants usually pay 5 weeks' rent as a deposit? I'd be using that and asking Helen to make good the damage.

Bruisername · 15/12/2024 12:01

I’m just imagining going on a viewing and Helen being there and spending the time bitching and moaning

we once viewed a house next to a pub and the tenants were in so the estate agent asked them if the pub creates problems. Well let’s just say it did and the estate agent was left blustering!!!

I rent from a friend and I never paid a deposit. I did have to sign a form for his mortgage company saying I had no claim on the ownership of the property.

My feelings about Brian date from decades ago when he fulfilled the niche taken over by Justin and then by Justin’s fellow board member with the improbable Dickens moment.

Think it’s still one of the forbidden relationships. A woman may not marry her step son
