Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you fancy Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The scars from Scambridge week will take some healing. Most of us felt we were the ones scammed - where was The Archers we know and (very occasionally) love?

Anyway, onwards and - almost certainly not - upwards. Will it be the best Christmas ever in Ambridge? Do we still care? Over to you!

Happy Birthday to Edward the bear.

Rochelle doesn't have custardy of the bairns. Maybe she has had psychotic episodes.

Bruisername · 02/01/2025 21:12

Oh wow! Some very well looked after teds! Mine is a youngster at 42 in comparison!!

I know someone has suggested this in the past, but is Joy anxious about Rex asking Rochelle out because Rochelle is a transwoman? I may have misheard but I think Rochelle's partner is called Bernie. We have all assumed that means the partner is male but it could be short for Bernadette and Rochelle could have been the female partner before transitioning.

I doubt this is going to be the case because I imagine the BBC would regard it as too controversial, but I am finding it difficult to imagine why else Joy is warning Rex off Rochelle. Drugs/alcohol/mental health issues? A tendency to murder her partners?

Either way I am going to lose interest if we don't find out soon. I am not sufficiently invested in Joy as a character to have patience with this dance of the seven veils business.

Also, can we take it that Joy's migraine was not genuine given Mick seemed to have forgotten all about it?

That doesn't make sense. and Rochelle could have been the female partner before transitioning.Did you mean Rochelle was the male partner and has transitioned?

I don't think either Joy or Rex would be particularly nonplussed about Rochelle being trans.

The spouse/ partner's name is Benny, not Bernie and other than Bennie in Bennie & The Jets it's not a female name.

There's no reason why a trans woman can't be as sly, prickly, unlikeable and unpleasant as Rochelle is but I can't see the BBC making the first trans character so unpleasant and unlikeable.

I'm surprised that Joy called off the party given she thinks Rochelle is likely to behave badly / be an embarrassment.

Final thought- strawberry liqueur is an odd choice for a New Year's Eve party.

I think she was violent and killed Mr Orville. Beechwood was paid from the life insurance because Rosh-hell was suffering 'mental health'.

Gonners · 02/01/2025 21:45

Orville was a green duck, as I recall.

KnittedFerret · 02/01/2025 21:59

Well it is Christmas Grin

Bruisername · 02/01/2025 22:04

I have very happy memories of an Emu puppet my Mum made and my Dad terrorised a birthday party full of kids with

loved Orville!!

KnittedFerret · 02/01/2025 22:08

I had an Emu. I terrorised some cousins. They were little terrors but were scared of Emu.

WagnersFourthSymphony · 02/01/2025 22:34

You had an Emu and then you parted with him, you monster! You asked someone to take him off your hands?

gets coat

KnittedFerret · 02/01/2025 22:40

No, he was brought by Father Christmas, and toys stayed at my parents' house for their grandchildren to play with. That's what ferrets do.

noodlezoodle · 02/01/2025 22:41

Agree that Joy's migraine was fictional, as both she and Mick both sounded a bit shifty when Rex mentioned it.

On the plus side I really enjoyed the Henry and Khalil conversation about goats and dormice, it was the kind of thing I would like more of, and less soapiness.

Strawberry liqueur is tequila rose.

Shamelessly cutting and pasting @Nettleteaser101 from the new thread:

In the New Year I would like less of....
Made up histories
Made up geography
New box-ticking characters
Eddie
Clarrie(her wobbly voice annoys)
Less "my darling " from the Pirate.
Less Mick.( I can smell him from here)
Get rid of Rochelle
I know where the turn off button is too, but I'm hooked.
Happy New Year All.
Oh and I loved the puppy. I want one now.😁

More:

I was there when DH discovered some of his childhood books on his nephew’s bookcase. The explosion was terrible to see. No permission had been asked. MIL was in deep trouble.

My DS take it for granted that I will always have storage space for their Duplo, Lego and Playmobil, along with my Bayco and train set.
