Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to hear more of Drunk Alistair, or other unusual views.

Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radioaddicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radioaddicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @OverArmour for the title. I was tempted to try some sort of complex riff on chocolate names, given @PedantScorner's lightbulb moment - Paul's sister is Cara Mack! - and all the nonsense in last night's episode about coffee creams, but I couldn't be bothered, beyond thinking we must all be Cadbury's Fruit and Nutcases for listening at the moment. Let's hope the SWs take a walk along Quality Street or we'll have to put a Bounty on their heads!

And over to you ...

We heard no spewing, nor has it been mentioned since.

Bruisername · 15/08/2024 14:54

She was so desperate to vomit that she woke from her unconscious state - having seen people in that state I don’t think she could have stopped herself vomiting. And also, if she hadn’t vomited she would have been at risk of alcohol poisoning?

in terms of the cider bottle George could just say he saw the crash -went to check on Alice (putting bottle in car) before calling police

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 15/08/2024 15:00

She simply believes, without any foundation as far as I can see, that she wouldn't have driven because she is a nice, decent person.

Mmm …

I don’t hear it as a ‘decency boundary’, more knowledge of her own habits. Certainly she wouldn’t have predicted she’d do all the dreadful things she has done as an alcoholic - but they were extreme, more or less one-off events. The driving is different. She’s been drunk in her car several times - and knows what she does when she is in that state.

Lack of curiosity over who else might have been driving is - odd, though.

VoxPop · 15/08/2024 15:13

Ha, ha the knives are out for Alice. Hope it doesn’t go to trial, if it reflects this vibe the judge will be donning the black napkin.

i think Alice has the very best foundation for believing she didn’t do it …
that being - she didn’t do it.

initially despite her disjointed recollections and strongly believing she would not do it (as she had not done it every other time she had parked up) she was disgusted at herself and because of the clear evidence totally took responsibility for everything.

Even when Chris said she would not have drank cider (because she never drank it and she had the vodka). She disagreed and said it was just the sort of thing she would do. She even gave Martha up despite Chris arguing against it. But she was so concerned at what she (really George) had done she said she could not guarantee Martha’s safety.

She fully intended to go to court and plead guilty, even on the day. But when push came to shove she could not say the word guilty because everything inside (including those disjointed memories) was telling her she had not done it. Which of course is correct.

After that, after putting herself in more likelihood of going to prison with no defence whatsoever against the compelling “facts” she became more resolved and as Chris described “like the old Alice”. She had been true to herself, despite putting herself in a much worse position. It was ethereal.

If it was as simple as thinking she was too nice to do it. She would never have taken responsibility from the start, nor had all the self loathing. She would have jumped on Chris’ suspicions about the cider bottle as an excuse, rather take full responsibility for that too. She would not have given up Alice. IMHO

His phone was said to have been destroyed by the submersion it suffered.

I think he'd cast it aside and got a replacement within a day or so? Phones can take a lot longer than that to dry out...

VoxPop · 15/08/2024 15:32

@RegimentalSturgeon totally agree about no spewing noise. Alice went totally silent after the cars clipped on the bridge, I presumed she had passed out. No spewing noise before.

@Bruisername Alice said she was feeling sick as soon as George disturbed her in the car. So she had already refrained from throwing up for quite some time. I imagine her previous drinking sessions had already acclimatised her body to the effects of mass booze consumption.

@TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden totally agree about it being more about knowledge of habits

BrightYellowDaffodil · 15/08/2024 15:34

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I hate to bother you but we're nearly at the end of this thread.

Something about Cantering On towards George being found out, perhaps?

Godesstobe · 15/08/2024 12:33

Thinking about Alice has got me wondering whether I would want to spend time in real life with any of the younger female characters.

Helen, Pip, Lily and Kirsty would be as intensely irritating to know as they are to listen to. I used to like Fallon but I have lost patience with her and her inability stand up for herself over the last few months. Emma's self-pity and spiteful nature would be difficult to stomach. Stella and Hannah might be ok but it is difficult to know as their characters have never really been developed. I do quite admire Natasha for her positive attitude (which must be difficult to maintain given who she is married to) but I'd have to say something if she tried to ride roughshod over me as she does over Fallon.

So I can't think of anyone. Perhaps Rochelle will turn out to be a real bundle of laughs.

I thought Fallon stood up for herself spectacularly well when Harrison was pressuring her to feel sad about losing the pregnancy.

Marseillaise · 15/08/2024 15:42

Alice was trying to open the door in order to spew. Maybe if she did spew, nothing would have been inside the car anyway?

harriethoyle · 15/08/2024 15:42

Hahaha @VoxPop 😂

The knives are out for Alice. Hope it doesn’t go to trial, if it reflects this vibe the judge will be donning the black napkin.

Cantering on to a fête worse than than an evening with PC Burns.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2024 16:09

Never fear, I have been watching this thread fill up from afar (the River Lea towpath, to be exact - stage 13 of the Capital Ring walk) and just got home in time.

New thread here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radioaddicts/5142883-archers-thread-171-harvests-nearly-over-but-will-george-ever-reap-what-he-has-sown-discuss-the-archers-here

Whatever the phone data might show (including record that he called Will), what evidence could the police find to show that George was driving not Alice? If Alice remembers it all and testifies that this was case, but George denies it, is that enough for a jury to have reasonable doubt? Is the clincher the content of the voicemail that George left Will? Can that be retrieved?

His fingerprints must be all over the steering wheel.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/08/2024 17:40

People keep talking about "every time she has been drunk in a car" as a reason to think Alice wouldn't drive when drunk, but in fact, the only time we heard her alone and drunk in a car, she had driven to Leaders Wood and parked there because she was frightened to go any further or to go home when she was drunk; she was definitely drunk when she rang Harrison on that occasion as soon as she had parked, and she been at an AA meeting in Borchester.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/08/2024 17:50

Hey - you two! We've moved!

ClickyHeels · 15/08/2024 18:43

Bruisername · 15/08/2024 14:46

Surely she was sick in the car so it should have been cleaned

If you drink a quantity of neat vodka on an empty stomach, you tend to retch not vomit.

UnintentionalArcher · 16/08/2024 12:29

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 13/08/2024 10:58

Moving on - can’t recall if this nice refreshing thing has made an appearance here before?

We are away in Belgium and my husband has had a bottle of this. I hadn’t seen it before.

ClickyHeels · 16/08/2024 13:40

Bring me back some chocolate please. No soft fillings, just delicious Belgian milk chocolate.

Was Mick's car badly damaged from being dunked in the Am?

There's a new thread.
