Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to hear more of Drunk Alistair, or other unusual views.

Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radioaddicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radioaddicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @OverArmour for the title. I was tempted to try some sort of complex riff on chocolate names, given @PedantScorner's lightbulb moment - Paul's sister is Cara Mack! - and all the nonsense in last night's episode about coffee creams, but I couldn't be bothered, beyond thinking we must all be Cadbury's Fruit and Nutcases for listening at the moment. Let's hope the SWs take a walk along Quality Street or we'll have to put a Bounty on their heads!

And over to you ...

Measles talk! Where's this from? My 7 month old grandson has measles right now! Too young for that particular jab. No idea where he got it from. It's been a bit hairy so far. An ambulance called by 111 and separately a and e. My poor dd is only just 20 and she's a bit stressed by it.

PS I like Paul and I think the 'adults' are not being very understanding.

Kieron would have been Paul's one night stand picked up on the night out, if Paul hadn't been too drunk to do anything and Lily hadn't chucked him out.

I worked with a Kieron, known as Ron.

I suspect Kieron is going to be Paul’s next relationship disaster. That we’ve already seen his true colours tells us exactly how it’s going to go.

Gonners · 13/08/2024 21:39

If George really must go to prison, could it be for accidentally battering Justin to death, please?

Bruisername · 13/08/2024 21:43

If we’re getting George to crash his escape vehicle into people then can pip be there

DadDadDad · 13/08/2024 21:44

So...

Alice having hypnotherapy and recalling salient details from the night of the crash - a bit ridiculous.

George / Will believing that Alice might have hypnotherapy and recall salient details, and so panicking - probably where the SW are going with this?

WorriedRelative · 13/08/2024 21:44

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/08/2024 19:38

I didn't entirely like the fact that Kieron (that is how the BBC has him spelt in the cast-list: looks faintly wrong to me, but hey) was only persuaded to leave when Ben came back to support Lily; I would rather she'd managed to get rid of him herself.

And where was Josh in all this?

Josh had gone to bed early, probably had to be up early.

Yeah - this SL is getting better and better 🙄🦈

It needn't be accidental.

Yeah, but can you imagine the shrieks of indignation and the massive month-long sulks and non-speaks that he would indulge in if any of the adults in his life were even the teeniest weeniest bit critical of how he conducted his sex or love life? How their daring to be interfering would be condemned and shouted about and talked over in detail with everyone he knows – I will not say with his friends, because he doesn't seem to have those, only His Audience.

I am really sorry about the measles; it is babies like that, totally innocent of adult folly, who make me so angry with Wakefield. I hope very much your grandson will pull through well.

I'm not sure why the former is ridiculous, but the latter is far more likely as a development.

Trivium4all · 13/08/2024 23:34

Conversations with vets re. suspected colics, in my experience, tend to go more like this: "I think it's got colic."-"I'll be there in 30/[colleague X] will be there in 30"-"Cheers, thx." [For knowledgeable peeps incredulous, I lived near an equine hospital.] I guess, for audience education purposes, we need to get more actual dialogue about symptoms and stuff...though the content of the dialogue rather sounded like someone who's read a random website about colic, rather than someone who's actually spoken to someone who has a clue.

Marseillaise · 13/08/2024 23:49

BrightYellowDaffodil · 13/08/2024 21:32

He’s also an absolute arsehole. If a member of staff had caught my horse’s colic early - knowing full well just how life-threatening colic can be, not to mention incredibly painful - I’d have been down on my knees with gratitude proffering wine/flowers/chocolates/all three as a thank you. NOT kvetching that I didn’t have to observe basic civilities because she was “just doing her job”.

<Grumbles that in her groom days we all knew - and loathed - people like that>

I still quite sympathise with him over his misgivings at Alice fronting up pubicity for the stables etc. How can it make sense to be advertising a business that wants people to entrust them with their children's safety by telling them that a known alcoholic who has recently fallen spectacularly off the waggon will be in charge?

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/08/2024 23:53

@stilldumdedumming good wishes to your DD, she must be so worried! At least baby won’t suffer the excruciating boredom that’s my memory of the disease. Hope all goes well.

Will Alice be in charge of driving the trap and during the scenic route she will inexplicably cross the bridge of doom and have a flashback?

echt · 14/08/2024 00:45

Thinking of the colic episode I was rather chuffed that I diagnosed it before anyone on TA. Thank you James Herriot. Grin

I think you might have it!
She will be in the dray/trap with George......

OK, I just thought it was far-fetched that hypnotherapy would conveniently retrieve memories from a time when Alice was so drunk she was passing in and out of consciousness. And then she pops down to the police station to say "I've just remembered I wasn't driving that night" and the police take that seriously.

BeatriceBatchelor · 14/08/2024 08:04

Pip is sort of growing on me. No, wait, listen ... it's her desperation to be something other than Pip that I'm finding both moving and pathetic. She's so desperate not to be Pip that she's become a lesbian. And a girly girl too. The hen party was so tragic, like she'd read a manual on how to be feminine and decided she needed mani-peds, rom coms and glitter and then she won't be cow botherer Pip any more, she'd be one of the girls.

Or I might just be talking shit 😂

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 14/08/2024 08:09

I.dont recall Emma and Kate ever being especially friendly. I guess they are family of sorts and it's for the plot but it certainly felt contrived. No way Emma would indulge Kate's alternative ways.

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 14/08/2024 08:10

Oh and Kate is slim with dark shortish hair..Slim like Helen but her her is brown and bobbed.

DeanElderberry · 14/08/2024 08:12

Who is going to be the one to point out to Paul that he is of course allowed to have a chaotic sex life and unsuitable partners, and that so is his mother.

RegimentalSturgeon · 14/08/2024 08:19

PMSL at the notion of Alistair featuring in any way in a ‘chaotic sex life’. Which is not to say that you haven’t made a good point there, @DeanElderberry .

Kieron seems a very odd spelling, but perhaps it's a totally new name unrelated to Kieran or Ciaran.

Late reply to say that Kieron is a perfectly normal spelling amongst Irish parents. I've also known a Pakistani Kieron (it may also be common there, but I don't know enough Pakistanis to have a wide sample size).

JoelenesParrot · 14/08/2024 09:06

I think historically they have been far from friendly. K was horrible to E when she ran desperately around the village begging for money so she could keep the Beech Wood home dream alive. George has put E in such a dreadful position that I think IRL the family would have to move.
