Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd have given a home to Hilda the Hellcat, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @MerryChristmasToYou, @OverArmour and @LillianGish for the thread title ideas.

This week is a bit better than last week, but the Brad/Adil/Lily stuff is very odd. Coming up to the anniversary of Jennifer's death (22nd January last year). We need a new matriarch - could that be Natasha? I find her quite an interesting character. Sometimes she's awful and then she has moments as last night where she utterly redeems herself.

Over to you!

Like everyone, I'm unsure whether Harry's weird speech patterns are bad acting or bad writing, but did anyone else get the impression yesterday that he recognised the name Shula in a horsey context and wasn't keen to meet her?

I can just barely imagine a horsey set with lots of Harrys not being able to pick one out, but Shula is a unique name and she was MFH for at least a year, as well as running the stables, so he probably knows her.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/02/2024 21:14

That's a thought. She might even know him.

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/02/2024 21:16

He did question the name. I assumed it was because it is an unusual one but you could well be right.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/02/2024 21:23

The weird speech patterns are even odder having listened to the first few minutes of the podcast linked by Totters above. He speaks perfectly normally there. I can't believe an experienced actor would lose the ability to speak normally just because he's been asked to use a much posher accent than his natural one.

@Sidebeforeself , why is she awful?

Oops, that should have been @CaptainMyCaptain , and there's a new thread.

I just don't like her from interviews and articles I've seen. She seems very much like her character in CTM to me including the voice.

ClickyHeels · 06/02/2024 16:00

I haven't seen her in anything so can't say but from a quick search she seems to be good at getting married to co-stars. She and 'Harry' have 2 DD called Wren and Lark! Seren and Nova might not seem so bad after all

On Chris being unwilling to say where he lives, I thought it was maybe embarrassment about living in a flat over a shop rather than having already clocked that he doesn't want Harry to be able to trace him. Harry was being so very condescending and the class differences emphasised that Chris may have felt self-conscious about it.

Harry massively fell from grace with me anyway by calling Chris 'mate'. Its a habit my ex-h had (possibly still has, I wouldn't know) of subconsciously class marking. He would never do it with other professionals, but as soon as a tradesman came to the house he was calling him 'mate' every third sentence or so. I called him out on it after a cricket match where he had very noticeably (to me) gone with 'mate' for the WC players and not for the university student players. I could be over-projecting this onto Harry, mind, but that's what it sounded like to me.

And how did he react when you pointed it out? Was he even aware he was doing it?
My brother is a code-switcher extraordinaire, as he spent a lot of his working life either on site or in management offices and is adept at blending in to both groups. It’s more than just sprinkling in “pal” (Scottish equivalent of “mate”) though.
