Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be euphoric about getting a job in an abattoir, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4888492-the-archers-spoilers-thread-8-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for the thread title suggestions. @HumanWetWipe came up with Cider with Fat Rosie and @BeardieWeirdie thought up Meadow Rise to Candleford. I wish I could have put in the Line of Duty mashups from the end of the last thread. Another time.

Heading for a ferry shortly, so nothing more from me for now. Over to you!

I think Mia is meant to be pretty academic too right? She’s doing 4 A levels same as him.

Bruisername · 05/10/2023 12:29

Yes - it’s kind of odd they’re not doing some open days together? I certainly didn’t go with my parents!

JanglyBeads · 05/10/2023 12:34

Yes Fink, his narrative def. had elements of DARVO - can't look up what it all stands for now, will remind myself later and post it.

SequentialAnalyst · 05/10/2023 12:41

I'm afraid that sometimes relationships that begin before university do not survive if each go to different universities - or even the same one. Don't you remember being 17 going on 18? Wink

Fink · 05/10/2023 12:48

Going back to the student ambassador's delivery, I LA as someone else here was catching up. I wonder if the actress was trying to play someone putting on an accent different from the one she grew up with? Like another working class student who was trying to speak RP to fit in at uni? Her intonation was odd, but her accent was reasonably unobtrusive. I wonder if she was cast as a non-rah 'ordinary' student.

Actually, I wonder if she really was an ordinary student rather than a professional actress.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/10/2023 12:49

OK, this feels far too early, and I'm sorry if it causes confusion, but I have to go out shortly to give blood and at the rate this thead is filling up I'm not sure it will last till I get back, so I've started the new thread. FILL THIS ONE UP FIRST!

And then move here:

Speaking of real students, that reminds me of a long-buried memory that the actress who played Emma before the current Emma was at Oxford at the same time as me. She read English. So it's kind of nice that the Emma character is getting to study English lit now.

JanglyBeads · 05/10/2023 13:05

Yeah the student ambassador didn't exactly sound like a student but that was the SW's fault.
We did lots of open days last year and will be starting more with DC2 in the summer (or possibly earlier, he's keen and looking at RG ones unlike his more pratical DSis)

Bruisername · 05/10/2023 13:05

If she was going for RP with a non-Rp English accent background then she failed! I thought she sounded Eastern European.

I mostly went with friends, or on my own (since you were always well looked after when you got there).

JanglyBeads · 05/10/2023 13:11

Thanks Witchery.

V common to go to open days with parents though.

Perhaps in Archerworld Felpersham is meant to be Warwick? <clutches at straws>

Much more likely to be Worcester, ex teacher training college turned university. Especially as Felpersham is considered to be Worcester (and Borchester, Evesham, even though I think they’ve git the names the wrong way round)

Fink · 05/10/2023 13:13

Bruisername · 05/10/2023 13:05

Interesting. I thought she had slight traces of non-British, but I couldn't place it. I wasn't thinking Eastern European.

When they've had actual Eastern European characters on they usually mess it up. I thought Lexi was really badly done - word perfect grammar and vocabulary (except when they were trying to make a point) but heavyish accent. And some of the pickers have been exactly the same, although you hear less from them. I can't remember what Pawel sounded like.

Bruisername · 05/10/2023 13:23

Actually maybe more Scandinavian. I’m not great with accents but it definitely sounded like she wasn’t British.

Scots from all parts of the country wear kilts. My brother wore one in the family tartan to Dad's funeral and he's never lived north of Edinburgh.

I liked the fact that Jazzer and Tracy dressed up for the Open Day and are so openly excited and proud of Brad. I am hoping against hope that we are going to hear (or at a minimum, hear of) a conversation with the Prof where Brad can have his confidence boosted. I thought we were hearing more very strong hints that he's on the spectrum in last night's episode. Struggling to read a map while under stress leapt out at me.

(Also agree that the student guide's delivery was very actorish.)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/10/2023 13:35

Good grief. I didn't intend to post that; I did "return" to get a new line, and it posted.

However, since it has posted all I can do is pretend it isn't there and answer as I meant to, if it lets me this time.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Generally not Scots from high-rise slums in the Midlands who left home with what they could carry on a motor-bike having been thrown out, and have never had a pot to piss in, is my point. Where did Jazzer get this kilt, and even more, those bagpipes? And why had his mother not flogged them off years before he grew into the one or learnt the other? He has never had the money to spare to spring for them himself: a kilt isn't cheap, and bagpipes are downright expensive, to say nothing of lessons in how to play the things so you don't make a noise like a dying hot-air balloon and never play a tune of any kind.

I really don't remember seeing a single ordinary person in Glasgow wearing a kilt in civilian life. In Inverness, sure, lawyers going in to the office and blokes in the pub and all. But not Glasgow.

Fink · 05/10/2023 12:25

And the fact that they try to paint the victim who eventually snapped as the abuser or guilty party is also par for the course.

Miles's 'everyone's forgiven Helen' as though both sides had some blame to share just made me nauseous.

Look at it from Miles’ point of view, though. Brother got his head turned, took up with this flaky woman overlooking the fact that she already had a kid (AID? A likely story) and not only does she make a spirited attempt to fillet him but comes up with some cock-and-bull story about ‘abuse’ and rape. Obviously lies: she lived in the same village as her frightful family and saw them pretty much every bloody day. Anyway, she walks and lies through her teeth to get the bleeding-heart idiots in the Family Court to deny brother the right to see his own son, dammit.

I found it hard to believe that Miles would have bleated to Alan about their abusive upbringing.

And I think it is a very great pity that Miles seems not to know about Greg and the shotgun/brain interface.

Bruisername · 05/10/2023 13:40

Totally agree that miles will not be seeing it all the same way. I forgot Rob was married and I doubt miles has heard anything from her about abuse

I’ve always though jazzer was a bit of a stereotype Scotsman - surely him playing the bagpipes is a bit paint by numbers?

Bruisername · 05/10/2023 13:42

Also, if someone asked if they should call Miles baby brother Robert on the baby names thread I would definitely think not. I don’t think they go at all.

For what it is worth, the cast-list for this week has "Student: Ntombizodwa Ndlovo" in it.

Ah, probably considerably further south than Poland, or even Bulgaria, then 😃

Bruisername · 05/10/2023 14:11

Interesting. I wouldn’t have placed her as zimbabwean! As I said, rubbish at accents but my dh grew up there so I should know better! Although from her CV it suggests she can do a range of accents so not necessarily her mother accent. Her CV is more impressive than a cameo in the archers would suggest!

i appreciated the international cohort at university and think it’s really important to broaden life experience. Brad going way and making friends from other parts of the world would be good for him!

I can see why he is intimidated because he is going from small village to big world and that’s a big jump.

Oh, you mean then he could have said "Look what she drove a previous partner to"?
