Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think we should hear more about the Naughty Milkman, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @Roysnewshirt for the excellent title suggestion, which I tweaked a bit.

I wonder how much dialogue we're going to get in the coming weeks. They're back to normal recording, I believe, albeit socially distanced. Also, when will we get our Friday and Sunday episodes back? I know I'm not the only regular to miss TA a lot more on Friday than on Sunday. The Sunday episode is still an incomer, of course, having only been introduced some 20 years ago, of course. Grin

(My parents retired to a village and some features of Ambridge life are very familiar from their experience, the 'incomer' label being one.)

I think Vince has seen Lizzie on the dating app.

That sounds quite likely, somehow. I wonder how he will go about letting it drop to David, if so!

fishmonging section? Ought exist as a word but probably doesn't

Isn't it the wet fish counter usually?

Is Vince single? I can't recall.

Its possible he reckons to get a good deal on a posher wedding venue or possibly he sees a business opportunity as Lower Loxley would have been hit hard this year.

David is such a plonker. At least he has stopped having a hissy fit at Elizabeth for having the temerity to know more about the wedding business than he does.

My Welsh class started with a brief discussion about TA, because our tutor's mother likes to know what we (I) think, so he will have to report back. She was not a fan of the monologues. Grin

Roysnewshirt · 14/10/2020 08:16

Speculating on Vince Carey’s private life makes me shudder a bit.

I bet he is the sort who sends special close-up pics to get to know a lady online!

TheSilveryPussycat · 14/10/2020 09:03

Didn't Vince say they had met at some sort of business round table?

EBearhug · 14/10/2020 09:43

Yes. Borchester Chamber of Commerce or something.

Repeatedly divorced, afaik. His daughters have two different mothers, and I think there may have been another wife as well. And he turnedup at Lilian's party with one woman and left with a different one.

R4 · 14/10/2020 11:15

He said he was going to open an abattoir. Don't believe everything VC says.
He could have easily googled a relatively high-profile person like Lizzie, found some details on her and pretended that they had met at umpteen different marketing / networking events that she had attended. She could never deny it, unless she wanted to appear forgetful or rude (not the image an events-organiser wants to portray!).

MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 12:08

EBearhug, os ydych eisiau trafod Y Saethwyr...

MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 12:10

That was "if you wish to discuss TA..."

MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 12:11

FFS Mike. It was "if you want to discuss TA..."

Roysnewshirt · 14/10/2020 12:20

Exactly! I think saying he had met her at a networking event was just a cover. It was his attempt at being a gentleman so he didn’t have to say ‘I saw you on Tinder’ in front of her brother...

EBearhug · 14/10/2020 13:59

Do I did eisiau traffic yr Archers yng Nghymraeg.

(He objects to us calling it y Saethwyr. And my phone mostly just objects to Welsh in general, but then starts trying to autocorrect things to i'r...)

EBearhug · 14/10/2020 14:00

Dw i ddim... trafod... Stupid phone.

Madcats · 14/10/2020 14:29

Presumably Lizzie will be in a relationship by the end of the year. Will it be with:
a) Alistair?
b) Vince?
c) CMR?

They must all be in their 50's?

There has been no sign that the children are showing any interest in running Lower Loxley, so I wonder what is planned?

I am still annoyed that Lizzie was so rude about the maths tutor in lockdown.

MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 14:40

EBearhug, texting in Welsh is a PITA. You can get a spellchecker for Word, I think, but not phones. I suppose you shouldn't translate surnames, unless it was something like Lloyd (Jim) or Pritchard (Ruth's maiden name).

Lizzie, Vince and Alistair are probably in their 50s but IIRC CMR would be in his 40s.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/10/2020 16:43

Freddie described him as being as old as their father; Nigel would now be 61.

I think Freddie may have been disgustedly exaggerating!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/10/2020 16:45

Oh, and he was the deputy principal of a college; would he have got to that level before he was forty-five or so? Those always seemed twice as old as God when I was a teenager, and liable to either baldness or grey hair.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/10/2020 16:49

Elizabeth was born in April 1967 (53) and Alistair in September 1962 (58); we have no information about Vince's age afaik. Have we heard how old Stephanie is? That would be a clue.

Choccyp1g · 14/10/2020 17:12

But Alastair was married to Elizabeth's sister!! These are Archers, not Grundies.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 14/10/2020 17:36

Elizabeth married Nigel after he had been having an affair with Shula, too.

She prefers men who have been "run in" by her sister or a friend -- she also took Cameron Fraser away from Caroline, not realising that Caroline had already decided Fraser was not that good a bet.

And Kenton has made a bit of a habit of going out with Sid Perks' ex-wives, so long as they had a house for him to live in.

MikeUniformMike · 14/10/2020 17:46

I got the impression that Stephanie was late 20s, but might be wrong. Vince might have started a family while still very young.

Taswama · 14/10/2020 18:10

You can add languages and keyboards to an iPhone in Settings. This makes Duolinguo considerably easier. I'd be surprised if Welsh isn't an option.

EBearhug · 14/10/2020 18:32

I had a Welsh keyboard on my old phone, but I couldn't find it (haven't looked hard) for this one. Both Android. It didn't work brilliantly anyway.
