Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think we should hear more about the Naughty Milkman, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @Roysnewshirt for the excellent title suggestion, which I tweaked a bit.

I wonder how much dialogue we're going to get in the coming weeks. They're back to normal recording, I believe, albeit socially distanced. Also, when will we get our Friday and Sunday episodes back? I know I'm not the only regular to miss TA a lot more on Friday than on Sunday. The Sunday episode is still an incomer, of course, having only been introduced some 20 years ago, of course. Grin

(My parents retired to a village and some features of Ambridge life are very familiar from their experience, the 'incomer' label being one.)

You need a native to say it as they have quite a strong accent.

listen to the welsh version.

R4
I said that she should speak to someone. Unfortunately, she chose the wrong person.

I don't think she exactly chose Lilian; Lilian bullied her after guessing that the only reason to refuse a drink must be pregnancy. (New idea to me, that one, but it is rife in Ambridge. That was how oops, Alice! intuitively knew that Pip was pregnant, I think? Along with Forbidden Coffee, which led Susan to assume a pregnancy when someone bought decaff in the village shop.)

R4
We have had a few conversations where Chris has tried to lure Alice away from some pressing farm matter but Alice has been conscientious and done the task. Farming is a bit like babies - there's no 'off' button, you have to do the right thing at the right time

I think that has been more not in the least wanting to talk with him or spend time with him than conscientious care about the farm; and that's not including the times when she didn't want to go home because what she wanted was to booze a bit without him knowing.

Yes, the first 2 are fine. Thanks.

It's a soap. Someone always guesses.

TheSilveryPussycat · 01/10/2020 17:32

MikeUniformMike wash your mouth out. With soap. Which TA is not ShockArchers

Augustbreeze · 01/10/2020 18:27

Yes I think the big issue here - and in Alice's Head, is the drinking, not the pregnancy. The latter will in some way cause the former to be revealed, I can't work out how long it will take though.

The big issue tonight,, if the R4 trailers are anything to go on, will be to do with The Horses. Poor poor Kirsty.

Taswama · 01/10/2020 18:53

Is Kirsty going to finally discover the truth?

Asterion · 01/10/2020 18:57

Hello all! Newbie to the thread here!

Can someone remind me what "the horses" is code for - is it Blake?

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 18:59

TA is a documentary.

Cursedy won't find out the truth tonight, they'll drag it out a while to get the ray tings up and fill Radio 4 with trailers cos it's cheep radio innit.

Darker · 01/10/2020 19:04

'horses' seemsto mean modern slaves - so all the lads that Philip is keeping, presumably without pay. They are very likely homeless with no family.

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 19:05

The horses are the slaves.

Asterion · 01/10/2020 19:11

Ah, got you. I didn't realise there were more than Blake.

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 19:21

There is Kenzie and, I think, Jordan.

Quinque · 01/10/2020 19:34

@Madcats ......gift of a bridle bag.
I heard it as "bridal bag"! Radio can be so confusingBlush

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 01/10/2020 19:37

Well, that was the dampest of damp squid. What a waste of excitement.

I am entirely happy for the Jolene, Fallon family line to die out naturally - Harrison as a father would be nauseating listening. But I imagine this strongly held lack of interest in progeny will last as long as Fallon's earlier professed dislike of marriage.

Dissatisfied customer here.

But welcome, Asterion!

I imagine there have been other slaves preceding the current three? Sold on to Alban or other slave-driving chums of Philip's.

Darker · 01/10/2020 19:37

Interesting that the SW have brought Fallon in at this point to talk about her reproductive choices. Where is this going?

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 19:39

That's strange because I clearly heard 'bridle bag'. I think I see words rather than hear them, so Lynda and Linda or Jill and Gill seem quite different.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 01/10/2020 19:45

@Quinque

Are the script writers setting the scene for a storyline about foetal alcohol syndrome? Ambridge is unusually low on special needs children(the cancer rate is also vanishingly small.) If so it's not exactly subtle.
Sorry, Quinque - meant to respond but forgot. There was a discussion about this, either much earlier in this thread or (iirc) in the previous one. That does seem the logical conclusion, but given how swiftly they exiled Bethany Tucker I cant see them wanting to write a child with any long term serious condition into the story.

Very true about the lack of cancer patients in Ambridge.

Darker · 01/10/2020 19:48

Ruth had breast cancer and has had a mastectomy.

But I agree there would more that likely be more cases in a village. The life expectancy is generally very good.

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 19:57

Do we want to hear about it though? I don't particularly.
There are plenty of other programmes in the schedule that can deal with it.

It isn't particularly entertaining, and having lost relatives to it, I think I'd feel a bit cheated if they miraculously recovered. I think we tend to only hear about certain cancers and we sort of expect everyone to battle it bravely, and sadly, sometimes, that is not enough.

EBearhug · 01/10/2020 20:11

gift of a bridle bag. I heard it as "bridal bag"! Radio can be so confusing

Me too, and I thought, what is one of those? To be fair, I have not heard of a bridle bag, either, but I assume it's for carrying a bridle about when it's not on the horse. (I leave the groom to deal with such details.)

cameocat · 01/10/2020 20:14

I rode a lot when I was younger and I'm not sure what a bridle bag is. I mean it could be for your bridle but I've never known one.

I also heard bridal bag and initially thought hand bag of sorts...

Augustbreeze · 01/10/2020 20:40

I've worked out what (I think's) going to happen with Alice, babe and alcohol:

Athe drink will result in a miscarriage, whether directly or indirectly, at which point she'll realise she's actually desperate to have a child. Which will motivate her to go to AA and all will be well.....

Jenny's going to have horrible flashbacks to her father's drinking. Ditto Peggy.

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/10/2020 20:54

So did I.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/10/2020 21:18

@MikeUniformMike Well, that sounded like "thlan ethli" to my ear, which we've always been told it isn't.

Though of all the ways I've heard of mispronouncing it, the one on the English side "lan Ellie' is one that I've never heard.

MereDintofPandiculation · 01/10/2020 21:28

Interesting that the SW have brought Fallon in at this point to talk about her reproductive choices. Where is this going? I thought it was their attempt to "cleverly" trick us, so that Alice who doesn't want a child will have one, whereas the person who really doesn't want a child turns out to be the unsuspected Fallon (who I always think of being as past childbearing age anyway, probably because I can't usually distinguish her from Jolene)
