Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think we should hear more about the Naughty Milkman, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @Roysnewshirt for the excellent title suggestion, which I tweaked a bit.

I wonder how much dialogue we're going to get in the coming weeks. They're back to normal recording, I believe, albeit socially distanced. Also, when will we get our Friday and Sunday episodes back? I know I'm not the only regular to miss TA a lot more on Friday than on Sunday. The Sunday episode is still an incomer, of course, having only been introduced some 20 years ago, of course. Grin

(My parents retired to a village and some features of Ambridge life are very familiar from their experience, the 'incomer' label being one.)

Another BOOP for nasturtia - it made me LOL - that is absolutely how Lynda would refer to nasturtiums. She probably also uses the original Greek pronunciation of kinema for cinema (which I now use myself as a joke ever since hearing a ridiculous pomposity at Oxford use it in all seriousness) It is these little details that define the quintessence of Lynda and make her one of my favourite characters.

CheetasOnFajitas · 23/09/2020 10:17

@MikeUniformMike

Lynda often mispronounces things in a pretentious way, so the nasturtia is only to be expected.
No, she pronounces things correctly in a pretentious way!
CheetasOnFajitas · 23/09/2020 10:20

I know, for example, that she would never countenance the abomination that is “Choreetzo” and would say “Choreetho” with a beautifully exaggerated lisp.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 10:21

Forget-me-nots are called that for a reason.
Lynda's enunciation of chimenea and bergamot were something else.

@MadameButterface

Hello archers thread, long time no see. I have no insight to add but just wanted to say how much i am enjoying the horses/alice is an alkie storylines , and how they’re starting to converge now. I’ve been lurking on all the archers threads during lockdown and beyond, and the discussions here have kept me interested and listening even when the program wasn’t quite at its best. Thanks regulars Flowers
Welcome @MadameButterface 😊

No, she pronounces things correctly in a pretentious way!

She is basically the radio version of Hyacinth Bucket in many ways. Presumably she actually comes from very humble origins which she has been trying to shake off all her life.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 11:48

@Roysnewshirt, she pronounced chimenea as jimenea and bergamot as bergam O

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 11:49

Sorry, I meant Cheetas not Roys

Chemenger · 23/09/2020 12:59

I’m willing to bet Lynda knows how to pronounce bruschetta. Which my Italian colleagues have taught me through the medium of mockery.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 13:03

I'd bet she says it Broo - Shett-a'

It's broosketta isn't it.
Ra-dicky-o always caches me out.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 13:04

as does Sev-ee-cheh

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 13:10

Many years ago a group of us from work went out for a meal to an italian restaurant. I ordered Tagliatelle, much to the amusement of one of the directors, who was half italian. I'd never get the gl right but I'm a lot nearer the correct pronunciation now. It isn't Taggy Telly.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 13:18

catches not caches.

Delia Smith used to say things strangely. I can remember a show when she went to great lengths to tell us about fieldbrick

I can't imagine what fieldbrick is but I remember her making hoomoose.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 13:25

wasn't Who Moos?

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 13:26

fieldbrik is feuille de brik

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/09/2020 13:27

Aha!

Roysnewshirt · 23/09/2020 14:01

For years I used to want to be like Delia Smith. We used to holiday quite near Saxmundham where she lived so we virtually thought we knew her. I went off her a bit after the drunken episode at Norwich Football Club but I have still retained a soft spot. Nowadays, I probably use more of Mary Berry and Jamie Oliver’s recipes than Delia’s if I am honest which does make me feel a bit disloyal...

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 14:10

I'll never forgive her for saying the vegetarians could have turkey.

How come Kristiffur doesn't know about Alice's drinking?

Chemenger · 23/09/2020 14:17

Yes Mum it is broo sketta all the way, if you don’t want noisy Italians laughing at you. They understand better if you wave your hands around too.

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/09/2020 14:22

She is basically the radio version of Hyacinth Bucket in many ways. The whole point of Hyacinth Bucket was the "keeping up with the Jones". Lynda has a whole personality.

Presumably she actually comes from very humble origins which she has been trying to shake off all her life I doubt that. But wow! what a dismissive comment!

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 14:27

I've worked with Italians and they were a nice bunch.

TV chefs/cooks are terrible for mispronouncing. If they can't say it, can they cook it?

Food names often look quite different to how they sound because dey is forrin.

A pet hate is people saying Bara Brith to rhyme with Frith. It sounds like Breeth (not Breathe) and thinking that Cawl is some special welsh recipe - it's just the word for soup or broth. Which brings me to Batasha - busy year for her.

StillDumDeDumming · 23/09/2020 14:28

I haven’t been on here for ages. But I came on to join in nasturtia chat. I love nasturtia and have lots in my garden. Cheered dp up by decorating his poached egg with the flowers at breakfast yesterday- delicious.

I’m glad storylines are now happening - but the Alice one is so sad. Chris will be so hurt. And I feel sorry for Kirsty - though Philip has never suited her.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 14:30

Chris won't be hurt because the Chrysalis will be spared and despite being very ill when born will be fine and Alice will be cured of her dipsomania by the pregnancy.

Chemenger · 23/09/2020 14:48

Just to be clear my Italian colleagues are my favourites, the Spanish are close behind with the Germans. They are warm but brutally honest and very, very loud.
