Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think we should hear more about the Naughty Milkman, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @Roysnewshirt for the excellent title suggestion, which I tweaked a bit.

I wonder how much dialogue we're going to get in the coming weeks. They're back to normal recording, I believe, albeit socially distanced. Also, when will we get our Friday and Sunday episodes back? I know I'm not the only regular to miss TA a lot more on Friday than on Sunday. The Sunday episode is still an incomer, of course, having only been introduced some 20 years ago, of course. Grin

(My parents retired to a village and some features of Ambridge life are very familiar from their experience, the 'incomer' label being one.)

Nasturtia! BOOP!
Lynda is back to her old self. Grin
EBearhug · 21/09/2020 23:57

I was just coming on to ask if Lynda had really said nasturtia, or had I misheard....

Roysnewshirt · 22/09/2020 07:51

Very much looking forward to Kirsty asking Philip if Gavin has a problem with the horses!

Robert must be heavily regretting wishing that Lynda was back to ‘normal’. I know she has lots of supporters on here but the woman is a bloody nightmare.

MikeUniformMike · 22/09/2020 12:01

Me too.

Philip is busy twirling his moustache.

Pobblebonk · 22/09/2020 12:24

I don't get why Philip acts the injured innocent so much in relation to Grey Gables. It was undoubtedly his firm's fault, so he can hardly be surprised if people blame him, let alone if they sue.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/09/2020 12:28

But nasturtia is a perfectly valid plural, like bacteria or criteria or media.

She probably says narcissi, too, rather than narcissuses.

It’s utter nonsense. I explained in exhaustive detail on the last thread how the insurance works. Even if no individuals are after him, GG’s property insurers almost certainly will be at some point.

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

But that's the point. It is valid, but only Lynda would a) know this and b) actually say it. Although on second thoughts, there's Jim...
TheSparklyPussycat · 22/09/2020 14:35

BTW I say narcissi.

TheSparklyPussycat · 22/09/2020 14:39

No, Robert is pleased, I am sure of it. Pleased and exasperated I'll grant you. Smile
Taswama · 22/09/2020 14:41

Will Kirsty say horses though, or gambling (and totally confuse Philip).

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/09/2020 15:04

But nasturtia is a perfectly valid plural, like bacteria or criteria or media. Not like criteria - singular of criteria isn't criterium. Grin

Whether it's a valid plural depends surely on whether nasturtium is a valid 3rd declension noun? And I'm not sure that it is. Scientific names may look like Latin and adjectives decline like Latin, but they're not necessarily actual Latin, just "Latinised" words, or even Greek words. Nasturtiums' "Latin" name is Tropaeolum - nasturtium is actually the old name for watercress (which is now Rorippa)

She probably says narcissi, too, rather than narcissuses.
I say "narcissi" but I certainly wouldn't say nasturtia (or antirrhina for that matter)

Missed the first bit - is Lynda growing nasturtiums? I thought they were terribly infra dig.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/09/2020 16:13

@TheSparklyPussycat

BTW I say narcissi.
I thought everyone did. Narcissuses is a bit of a mouthful.
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/09/2020 16:49

I think if Lynda ever had a nasturtium in her garden she probably still has them: they are a bit difficult to get rid of once they have decided they like the place.

MadameButterface · 22/09/2020 17:53

Hello archers thread, long time no see. I have no insight to add but just wanted to say how much i am enjoying the horses/alice is an alkie storylines , and how they’re starting to converge now. I’ve been lurking on all the archers threads during lockdown and beyond, and the discussions here have kept me interested and listening even when the program wasn’t quite at its best. Thanks regulars Flowers

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/09/2020 21:11

I notice she said Dahlias and not Dahliae.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/09/2020 21:38

Might that be because Dahliae is a fungus type, and the plural of Dahlia is dahlias?

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/09/2020 22:20

Might that be because Dahliae is a fungus type, and the plural of Dahlia is dahlias? Well, if you're going to pretend that Nasturtium is a Latin word and pluralise it to Nasturtia, then why wouldn't you take Dahlia, which is the name of a genus just as Nasturtium still is, and pluralise it according the rules of Latin grammar?

Especially since in the fungus Verticillum dahliae you do exactly that, and form the genitive according to the rules of Latin grammar (Verticillum of Dahlia (1)).

(1) or possibly of Dahl, since the fungus in question doesn't appear to be particularly enthusiastic about dahlias.

TheSparklyPussycat · 22/09/2020 22:31

So we can now conclude that Jim would not say nasturtia Smile

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/09/2020 22:52

Don't blame me: it seems to have been an accepted plural before I noticed it at all. en.wiktionary.org/wiki/nasturtium

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 07:45

they are a bit difficult to get rid of once they have decided they like the place. They are.
I seem to have wild rocket rocketing wildly too. Good job they are edible.

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2020 07:46

Lynda often mispronounces things in a pretentious way, so the nasturtia is only to be expected.

Roysnewshirt · 23/09/2020 08:43

What exactly is wrong with the bird table? I couldn’t quite work it out. Is it too avant-garde? It sounds as if the brief was very vague so I have some sympathy with Chris (a rare moment and limited only to bird tables)...

EBearhug · 23/09/2020 09:05

they are a bit difficult to get rid of

Not when you actually want them, they're not.

Darker · 23/09/2020 09:38

I recommend slugs to get rid of nasturtiums and marigolds. I have a sleek sliding succulence of them tidying up the garden and creating soft silver artwork around the patio and walls.
