Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like Hannah to stay around, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @SurpriseSparDay for the title. I haven't heard 12/12 yet so must catch up now, seeking relief from the outside world. Sad

I seem to remember Kirsty and Phil going on a double date with Gavin and Stacey and Kirsty being a bit upset that her ‘DIL’ was actually older than her it something like that.
I think the amount Phil offers should not depend on their choice of location. £1k sounds perfectly generous. I’ve think it’s best to offer an amount without strings rather than paying for the flowers / drinks/ men’s suits etc.

impostersyndrome · 28/12/2019 19:50

Is anyone else getting ads for Canada Goose alongside the posts on goose dinner?

And YY to ridiculous caricature of ‘consultant’, And ghastly grabby son demanding ridiculous wedding to be paid for. Would anyone of that age, presumably in his 30s, really contemplate being so cheeky? I expected Phillip to go all bluff and say the northern equivalent of “not bleeding likely me old son” . But yes, Kirsty’s spluttering were the best bit of the scene. You could hear her biting her tongue a mile off.

He's welsh, isn't he?

stripeypillowcase · 28/12/2019 20:51

goose is very fatty but the meat is very tender and delicious.
we were 8 for christmas dinner and had 2 geese and lots of leftovers.

and due to the fat content it's really easy to cook, you just put it in the oven and take it out when ready, no faffing about, no basting.
and the fat can be poured into a jar (or jars) to use for roasties or spread on bread.

EBearhug · 28/12/2019 22:07

He's welsh, isn't he?

Yes. He said Nadolig Llawen to Natasha the other day, and something about "we Welshies have to stick together."

EBearhug · 28/12/2019 22:07

We've had goose between three before.

impostersyndrome · 29/12/2019 07:43

Of course, Welsh! In my defence, I have the character the actor played in the fabulous TV series Last Tango in Halifax stuck in my mind when he speaks, so I must be hearing Yorkshire in his voice... Grin

SurpriseSparDay · 29/12/2019 08:54

Was Philip in that? Who did he play?

I thought it was Leonard who was in Last Tango?

(Confused.)

SurpriseSparDay · 29/12/2019 09:30

Oh! Note to self:

The Voice of Joe Grundy. Immediately after TA tonight.

impostersyndrome · 29/12/2019 11:00

Leonard, not Philip! I’m going to crawl back into lurking... clearly I’m not capable of writing sense today

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2019 14:08

I liked the reference on BH this morning to Leonard being Tom Wriggleworth's father.

SurpriseSparDay · 29/12/2019 19:45

Oh good heavens - Ed seems as soppy in real life as in TA! Crown Sad Crown Sad Crown Sad

And Edward Kelsey sounds so delightful.

Lovely programme.

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2019 19:51

It was lovely. So nice to hear their real voices.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 29/12/2019 20:09

If Gnasher needs an assistant, I think Phoebe would be perfect!!

Those two are made for each other.....

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 29/12/2019 20:26

Taswama, Gavin's fiancée isn't really called Stacey, is she? Confused

Is someone having a laugh?

MissBarbary · 29/12/2019 20:52

Pip was particularly irritating tonight- even by Pip's own high standards of being annoying.

I'm so bored with the re-wilding story.

R4 · 29/12/2019 21:03

Ed seems as soppy in real life as in TA!
Oh, I thought Barry was lovely.

I decided that 'Stacey' was either a subconscious mistype or a joke. She's really a 'Kelly'.

So glad that Rex had the nous to not get mixed up in Josh's stupid forgery scheme.

echt · 29/12/2019 21:38

I'm trying to imagine Ruth and David's reactions if Pip pulled out of the re-wilding seeing as some Brookfields land is now part of this.

SurpriseSparDay · 29/12/2019 21:42

R4 I intended ‘soppy’ as a compliment! I love Ed and from what I’ve read in the past his actor seems to be an admirable individual.

But I’m always fascinated by people who can become demonstrably emotional when talking about a beloved deceased person - I’m just not wired that way. I do accept that actors must have unusually speedy access to the articulation of emotion, but if anyone else does it - reality TV stars, say - I tend to feel highly suspicious of their sincerity.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/12/2019 08:26

The tribute to Edward Kelsey was absolutely lovely. It's here if anyone else wants to catch up: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000cpv7

Jim's first ghost story goes out at 6.15pm today. Looking forward to it! 3 x 15 minute episodes, tonight, tomorrow, New Year's Day.

Gosh, Spar, I'm one of those people. I get emotional about almost anything, at the drop of a hat. It's not put on, it's just how I'm wired. I think it's quite facile, as I can get over it pretty fast too, but there's nothing insincere in the moment. It's actually quite embarrassing to be such an easy crier.

I think this makes you Nancy Mitford and me the Duchess of Devonshire. Grin Please don't mention the little houseless match ...

I am reminded today how irritating it is to have guests. I got up early this morning made my coffee (ultra quietly to avoid waking them up) and settled down to listen to the Archers as per usual (except DH Was still asleep so I was in the living room rather than in bed). Half way through they’re all up, and occupying every room of the house, Archers has to go off. Now I’ll have to wait until they all fall asleep on the sofa (if they’re true to form this should be around 10.30), since I’m the only adult who can stay awake for an entire day, apparently.

GranaryGhost · 30/12/2019 09:54

😂 I am a stage on from you up first and to bed last but I keep the program in when they appear... you have reminded me I used to be better!

birdsdestiny · 30/12/2019 10:13

I keep listening as well. Am obviously very rude.

Chemenger · 30/12/2019 11:31

But how do you hear anything over “what are you listening to? Where is the milk (in the fridge, surprisingly). What are we doing today? It’s cold/warm/wet/dull/ windy isn’t it? Etc etc. I’m now hiding in my bedroom listening.
