Please can you recommend your favourite podcasts. I have just started listening and find the choice amazing but overwhelming

I'd definitely recommend Earhustle. It's a podcast made by the inmates of a prison in the US, and tells their stories of their lives and life in prison. Really interesting xx

I have quite a collection and obviously It depends on your tastes and specialist subject areas, but

  1. "Answer me This" is interesting, funny and done very well.. Its been running for many years so lots to catch up with. Its got some adult content. 2)"The Modern Mann" produced by one of the Answer me this team, a monthly magazine style show. Each month he does an interview with someone who has done something remarkable or interesting. They are all very different but Olly Mann has a great interview style and gets his guest to reveal a lot. Also has a sex education segment at the end so again Adult content only.
  2. "No Such Thing as a Fish" the team behind QI take an interesting fact and talk about it.

There are loads of radio 4 shows that have extended podcasts versions. I like, Crows science, The curious cases of Rutherford and Fry, and The Kitchen Cabinet, but take your pick they are all very well made.

I'm a true crime podcast fan and I'd recommend Room 20 (although not true crime), Bear Brook, S Town, The Storyteller: Murder Most Foul, The Shrink Next Door, The Dropout. They're all single story over several episodes. Smile

LittleLebowski · 06/12/2019 10:03

My "desert island" podcast would be This American Life. Consistently high quality, masses of variety, some funny/sad/interesting covering all topics and in 3 mini stories so you can listen to one then come back to it. Huge back catalogue now too. Second to that would be Radiolab.

LidlDonkey · 07/12/2019 21:22

The best podcast EVER is My Dad Wrote a Porno. It sounds rude, but it is absolutely hilarious. I've had to stop listening to it in public because I often end up crying with laughter.

I've also recently really enjoyed The Missing Cryptoqueen (true story about a missing billionaire) on BBC Sounds. Also Death in Ice Valley, if you like a real-life mystery.

The Unbelievable Truth

Storywriter · 31/03/2020 12:31

What about for short stories? And how do you find them? I like BBC Sounds but I've exhausted their archives - where else do you look as a starting point, anyone? Spotify? Google?

frostyfingers · 04/04/2020 17:16

I’ve just stumbled across 13 Minutes to the Moon about the moon landings - fascinating stuff, and I’m not a space geek in any way shape or form. It caught my eye whilst looking for something to accompany my window cleaning and it was well worth it.

It’s on BBC Sounds, from the World Service.

blueberrypanda · 24/04/2020 11:18

I really like Beauty Is Eternal for unique guests and Bulletproof Radio for health topics.

pumpingRSI · 26/04/2020 08:30

I've just come up for air from Serial, binged series 1 and 3. I love a bit of desert island discs for people I've heard of and people I haven't. Sibling Revelry is good as it's Oliver and Kate Hudson talking about the sibling dynamic with other siblings.

Margie32 · 29/08/2020 21:24

Fortunately with Fi and Jane. Just brilliant.

Scottishlassie81 · 01/09/2020 16:13

Comedy - Frank Skinner Show, another vote for Answer Me This
Science - Infinite Monkey Cage, also funny and has Brian Cox as a host.
Marvel - Fatman Beyond - if you like Kevin Smith
General geek TV and movies - The Weekly Planet
Showbiz - The Perez Hilton Podcast
Ghosts - We Need to Talk About Ghosts - hosted by a Liverpool chap
Movies - The Empire Movie podcast, there are several others. Reel Blend and Lights Camera Barstool

I love podcasts. I have many. I use them to help me go to sleep when my brain is churning.

Katinski · 06/09/2020 11:26

Another shout out for Fortunately... by Fi Glover and Jane GarveySmile
They're such friends and bounce off each other delightfully. Away from the constraints of the Beeb they can be quite outlandish! And VERY gigglyGrin Each week they invite a guest to join them. Last night I listened to them chatting with Miriam Margolys, for instance.
Definitely my favourite series of podcasts.

laurae1987 · 13/09/2020 12:25

I love podcasts. I like them as a replacement for magazines when I haven't got time to sit down and listen.

My friends have just made one called Real Fix. It's women like you would get in the real life magazines, talking about their crazy stories.

Also love Adam Buxton, Serial, This American Life - probs my other top 3.

TryingAgainPod · 24/09/2020 23:07

Hi, I know I would say this - but I have launched the Trying Again Podcast today. A podcast that is exploring the world of miscarriage. Episode 1 and 2 are available today to download with episodes being released weekly.

Katinski · 06/10/2020 13:56

I came across St.Elwick's Neighbourhood Assoc.Newsletter Podcast(Pocket Edition)and I've been laughing my way through them.No.6 has the wonderful Stephanie Cole as an exasperated, sweary'SilverTop' who just wants all the do-gooders to just bugger orf.
An absolute treat!

The Truth is really good.

(I'd quite like some suggestions for short stories too.)

Spotify Apple Podcasts Sticher If you have a Android device, there are a number of podcast apps you can download - I use one called Pocket Casts that I really like
SunsetBeetch · 13/10/2020 12:45

Sorry, that reply was supposed to be for @Storywriter !

Thirtyrock39 · 20/11/2020 16:13

'You're wrong about' is two American journalists giving alternative viewpoints and in-depth research on famous news events and people - everything from killer clowns to Jessica Simpson to the challenger disaster - it's told in a really informative and funny way and so interesting . They've done a five parter on princess di recently that is just gripping
To be fair it was recommended on my other favourite pod cast 'the high low'

Mynxie · 27/11/2020 22:02

Thirtyrock39 you must be as gutted as I am that The High Low is finishing next week Sad

I’m really going to miss it

Thirtyrock39 · 29/11/2020 10:42

Yes I'm really sad about it - I love listening to it when I'm out for a jog and their recommendations are great I've discovered so many books, tv programmes from that podcast

I thought I'd exhausted BBC Sounds but then someone pointed me in the direction of Claire in the Community which are short half hour radio style plays about a social worker, her colleagues and boyfriend. Claire is played absolutely brilliantly by Sally Phillips. It makes me laugh out loud so can't listen to it in public.
Backtotheplanetofthegrapes · 12/12/2020 10:42

I really like Wheel of Misfortune on BBC Sounds. Alison Spittle and Fern Brady laughing cheers me up!

It’s not for the faint-hearted, with adult content and swear words. Lots of disasters featuring poo, piss and protein powder!
