Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like Alf to stay around, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from //www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: //www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @DoctorTwo for the thread title! I was strongly tempted by R4's suggestion of Wildlife on Four: Jonneh is wild at Lily, Phoebe rewilds by Occam, Joy is in the wilderness and David is bewildered by a marriage proposal. Grin

So we did make it past Joe's funeral at last. Are we heading for a Christmas octogenarian wedding now?

he has a predilection for younger women.

Maybe not as strong as his predilection for stately homes, and fancy kettles and never having to pay for anything ...

This was exactly my thought when CMR was outlining the evening's cooking (yes, I know lentils are cheap), but he's a fundamentally a cocklodger, isn't he?

Venison sausages! Bambi banger stew.

Venison sausages and lentils-delicious!

I doubt that CMR would have bought cheap lentils.
They were probably extra special organic puy lentils.

Of course they were.

Oh Lily- how disappointing for you. Johnny and Bella seem to have sorted things out. Unlike you.

Yes, MissBarbary, she wanted tears to feed off and the gnashing of teeth to dance to on her pretty little feet, didn't she? Using gormless Johnny's affairs (by which I mean business, not that the serf has multiple carryings-on on the go - where would he find the time?) as a little laboratory to test her own emotions, while carefully feeding Pat enough false concern to ensure that she flat-foots in with questions.

I have been chided for this, but I say once again, rancid little bitch.

Scrolling through a baby names thread and realised with shock that I’m still deeply annoyed about the naming of the Brookfield heiress.

It was all so clumsy. The ridiculous machinations to get ‘Grace’ in there somewhere, for no good reason.

And of course she should have been Juniper. Or, if not, at least something with some aural presence. Apologies to bearers of her actual name but it’s completely anonymous as a radio name. It wasn’t chosen for any particular reason afaicr, it doesn’t say anything about her, and I find myself switching off, mentally, whenever she’s mentioned.

Really wish the editor would send tedious Pip and her daughter on a lovely adventure to Australia. For about forty years.

I dont know if I am chiding you or not but for me you are making this thread a highly unpleasant place to be.

OOoh... a fight breaking out on the nice, gentle, stately Archers thread.

Report

Unusual views fine. Calling a woman - even a fictional woman - a “rancid little bitch” absolutely not fine.

Report
birdsdestiny · 21/11/2019 07:58

Which means that its fine for me to post my view then isn't it.

Report
birdsdestiny · 21/11/2019 08:00

Yes are we now welcoming racist language on this thread because it's also an unusual view.

Report
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/11/2019 08:00

I hope not. Enough of that about everywhere else. Civil agreement is good, lifeblood of a thread. Sexist insults, albeit thrown at a fictional character, not good. Please tone it down, @Pierrettelasanguinaire.

Disagreement is what I meant, and for avoidance of doubt I was replying to NewName73.

(Morning coffee has not yet kicked in, obviously.)

The thing is ... I so often (ok, once or twice) stumble upon Archers offshoot threads and urge the posters to come here. And they reply that they tried once and were so shouted down by ‘the regulars’ that they’ll never repeat the experiment.

And if people are being deliberately provocative - can we not just move swiftly on?

(birdsdestiny - I really hope not. This isn’t a place where I would want to feel unwelcome. Not after 112 threads ...)

Rancid is an odd term to describe someone, and Lily isn't particularly bitchy.

And if objecting to really obnoxious language used repeatedly is “shouting down”, then happy to be guilty as charged

Yes Bert - really truly.

I remember because I have more than once replied with a touch too much ... froideur to a new poster innocently attempting to explain TA to me - and then been called patronising. Different type of thing obviously - but I do try a bit harder now not to drive people away.

(And, in the end, I guess I care more about the shocking racism displayed on my ought-to-be-favourite TV thread. I don’t want to be talking to myself on a substitute thread - and I really don’t have the energy for a fight ...)

I don't think that objecting to nasty sexist language is 'shouting down' nor do I think that it should just be ignored. You wouldn't be saying that if the language was racist or ableist I assume?
