The Archers #109: Pulp Fiction! Hammer Horror (Tracy), Carry On (Brian & Neil), Call the Midwife (Adam, Ian, Lexi) - but no political thrillers, Ambridge remains Brexit-free. Nitpick here!

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to Bucking Frolics and LillianGish for the title ideas, which I had to edit down a bit to get under the character limit.

I wonder if Lily will have gone back to Manchester by the time we've filled this thread.

Dark You do know that every time you say something like that a kitten dies don’t you?

ADarkandStormyKnight · 08/09/2019 14:56

Surely no-one wants Joe's death to be in vain? Pip will be run out of town!

chemenger · 08/09/2019 16:55

Will could shoot Pip?

MargueritaBlue · 08/09/2019 17:06

I thought of that too.

Taswama · 08/09/2019 18:10

I thought Mr Midlands Meat King sounded like a pantomime villain.

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2019 18:15

No. Pip has to do something so bad that she is never heard of again. Not even in hushed cooing tones.
Killing herself, Toby and Rosie in a drink driving accident would be perfect but leaves scope for months of mourning, so it needs to be a gun massacre or something.
The only person who would ever mention her could be Susan.

Perhaps she could go and rewild the damaged parts of the Amazon. Rather like Adam was sent to Africa, Debbie went to Hungary, Daniel joined the army and Kenton joined the merchant navy. No drama but out of site and mostly out of mind

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2019 19:08

Maybe they could shove her in the cereal cupboard for a few decades.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 08/09/2019 19:15

Just heard Friday's episode Grin

Wasn't it utterly delicious hearing Deevid being given short shrift by Meat Man Casey!

I just wish it had've been Pip, instead of David - that would have been perfection.

QuaterMiss · 08/09/2019 19:19

Amazing!

How have they made me swing from wanting to stuff Emma’s mouth full of hay to wanting her elected as PM in a single episode?

BOOP

Eastie77 · 08/09/2019 19:22

That made me feel so sad for Emma all over again (my sympathy had been waning in recent weeks).

MrsGrindah · 08/09/2019 20:15

Yes but she had to get it in earlier didn’t she about how hard she works?

MargueritaBlue · 08/09/2019 20:53

How have they made me swing from wanting to stuff Emma’s mouth full of hay to wanting her elected as PM in a single episode?

I'm listening on catch-up but for the moment she's being utterly horrible.

echt · 08/09/2019 20:53

Emma was out of order at the meeting. About the use of the grassy areas she said not that something couldn't be done but that it shouldn't. This argues that there are restricted uses of the areas which she should have dealt with as an official, not getting personal about it all.

And she was spiteful to Freddie.

MargueritaBlue · 08/09/2019 20:54

How have they made me swing from wanting to stuff Emma’s mouth full of hay to wanting her elected as PM in a single episode?

I'm listening on catch-up but so far she has been horrible.

MargueritaBlue · 08/09/2019 20:54

Sorry for double post.

MargueritaBlue · 08/09/2019 21:00

The scene with Tracey and Lizzie was good.

Motoko · 08/09/2019 21:45

She was really horrible to Freddie. I'm glad Tracy was there, being kind to him, and later on with her message to him via Lizzie.

Tracy and Freddie being mutually supportive, could lead to a nice friendship, and with each learning about the other's world, it will lead to better understanding of each other.

I wonder if Joy will become a regular? We've all met a "Joy" at some time in our lives, so I can see her becoming a popular character, even if in a love/hate kind of way. I'd love to see her and Susan trying to talk to each other, and could see a rivalry develop between them.

birdsdestiny · 08/09/2019 21:50

Is Joy someone well known, her voice was familiar.

Tonnerre · 08/09/2019 23:34

I didn't interpret what Emma said as meaning that they could do something about the use of the grass areas but wouldn't. It's pretty unlikely that there would be any prohibition on children using them either in the deeds or elsewhere; if it was in the deeds, surely Joy would have said so, and if there were some sort of bylaw you'd expect there to be a notice up, and again Joy would have said so. Emma could have effectively been saying "It's allowed at the moment, even if we could stop it by banning it, we shouldn't".

TheSilveryPussycat · 09/09/2019 01:30

Wasn't Joy justjust a sort of charicature of a townie incomer? Complaining about tractors and cow dung FFS! Her last complaint seemed to be that there were actual children living in the development. It was this that Emma was addressing, saying that this very fact shows that the development is a success.

LillianGish · 09/09/2019 06:30

Joy was a ridiculous caricature and Casey the abattoir man sounds like a replacement for Timotei (what happened to him - he was supposed to know Oliver?) What I hate more than anything is bringing in random characters to give the plot a push. The best scriptwriters do it with the existing characters (and I include the fully-formed silent characters here). Let’s hear Neil or Emma reporting back on or discussing the meeting, but don’t give a random character so many (or in fact any) lines.

TheOliphantintheRoom · 09/09/2019 06:48

I know I'm overinfested but I really wish Emma had got her house. It would have made a much more interesting, long term story line.

LillianGish · 09/09/2019 07:16

I couldn’t agree more Oliphant.

QuaterMiss · 09/09/2019 07:48

Surely there can’t be a sentient being in this or any other galaxy who doesn’t wish Emma and Ed had got their house?

Even bricks and cow pats and shotguns must be broken-hearted over Emma’s disappointment. Only Kate and Hannah remain unmoved.

And Peggy’s half million must feel like a vast, unnecessary kick in the teeth. (But it wasn’t poor Freddie’s fault.)
