Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @QuaterMiss for the title of this thread. For reasons of space had to cut out the bit speculating about Oliver and Tracy pairing off. Surely not! Shock

Off now to give blood, something nobody in Ambridge ever does. Hmm See you all later.

It's crept in from the US. I've seen it used in London. Pity. Front garden is a nicer term.

I thought Tracy sounded downright nasty when she offered Em a measly £5 for the ottoman, having earlier commented on how nice it was.

She knows how devastated Em is and yet couldn't resist taking advantage of her.

QuaterMiss · 19/08/2019 15:50

Guess what I’m watching at the moment - Quatermass and the Pit.

Am about to start episode 3 of 5. It’s delightful. So slow and blunt but full of suspense. The whole series made for £275,000 in 1967, so Wiki tells me. I probably did glimpse bits of it on TV first time round but would have been too little to take much notice. And I don’t even remember what made me think of it a couple of years ago.

Madcats, I don’t suppose Emma personally gives a toss about upcycling, she was just glad to profit from people with more money than sense. The SWs have placed her firmly in a class that would prefer new furniture. I feel mean saying that, but I’m sure she wouldn’t be keen on the ‘faux shabby chic, let’s pretend we inherited this’ look. I thought it was odd that she was keen on the coffee table in the first place - she may just have wanted to try out emulating Fallon’s buyers.

chemenger · 19/08/2019 16:02

Tracy gave £30 for the ottoman, didn’t she? I assume she got the £300 she scraped together for Emma before back?

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/08/2019 16:07

Tracey definitely paid £30 for the ottoman. Shula paid £5 for the brandy glasses.

Linseedlill · 19/08/2019 16:28

Oh please let Emma forge a life for herself and not return to either Will or Ed. It's probably a pipe dream, but I'd like to see her get over her depression and envy, work hard as usual, and become more successful than either of them!

And yes MargueritaBlue thanks for the reminder about Hannah. Where has she gone? Very poor continuity from the sws!

We don't have brandy glasses. We drink whisky by preference, but we do have some green-stemmed hock glasses in the cupboard. We also have lots of water glasses that were former mustard containers (you can collect the set). I don't know what class that makes us Grin.

birdsdestiny · 19/08/2019 16:34

I feel the same about Ed, she should run away screaming from him. It's not aspirational to not want to live with your in laws and a 95 year old who keeps ferrets in the house, it's normal sane behaviour.

BorsetshireBlueBalls · 19/08/2019 16:59

I think Clarrie did well not to crack back at Susan that she never need have been troubled with Ed as a son in law had Emma managed to keep her vows and her knickers on. But Clarrie is a much nicer person than I am.

donotcovertheradiator · 19/08/2019 17:27

I'm wrong about Tracy then. I take it all back!

Motoko · 19/08/2019 20:05

It's crept in from the US. I've seen it used in London. Pity. Front garden is a nicer term.

"Front garden sale" is a bit of a mouthful though! "Yard sale" doesn't seem to have travelled to Wales yet, I have seen "garage sale" used here though.

Motoko · 19/08/2019 20:15

Pip and Phoebe were annoying tonight. At times, Phoebe sounded like a 15 year old, although she had reason to be annoyed about Pip, and I liked her ultimatum.
Pip should have turned her phone off. Why was Ruth texting her every minute about their pitch? And Pip didn't seem very engaged, so why bother joining Rex and Phoebe? Or is she trying to maximise her chances of getting a cut of the money?

Anyway, it seems that Rex and co, have made the shortlist, so we know it's going to be Brookfield, Adam, and Rex and co. (Have I missed anyone else?) Who else made the shortlist, are they going to tell us before the winner's announced?

MikeUniformMike · 19/08/2019 20:36

Pip, Feebs and Rex will win, which will annoy the Dopeys, Adam and Toe B. The project will keep Feebs in Ambridge.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 19/08/2019 20:43

Phoebe is the true heir...

MrsGrindah · 19/08/2019 21:26

Pip should have turned her phone off
Ah but if she had then she wouldn’t be able to say “ I must get this” which is what every character says whenever their phone rings.

echt · 19/08/2019 21:27

How rude was Pip even being on her phone. And as for the suggestion that people in the village hall would have theirs on is beyond silly. Very her to pinch the best bit of the speech she can't be bothered listening to.

In other news, Jim would never say "showcase". Grrrr. My students know never to write it or use it in class.

BertrandRussell · 19/08/2019 21:35

Did we know that Pip was involved in two bids? Can’t see Peggy liking that at all...

Motoko · 19/08/2019 22:00

What's wrong with "showcase" echt?

Motoko · 19/08/2019 22:05

Yes. Phoebe insisted on asking her at Rosie's birthday party, even though Rex told her it wasn't the right time, and then Phoebe got annoyed, because Pip kept getting distracted (as you would, at your child's birthday party) while Phoebe was trying to explain it to her.

birdsdestiny · 19/08/2019 22:34

I thought Phoebe was just asking for Pips opinion on the bid at the party, a critical friend type of thing. I had no idea she was part of the bid. Did that just happen tonight?

LadyRannaldini · 19/08/2019 23:15

It's strange that Emm was sooo obsessed with her new house that she paid out for new glasses\furniture and didn't go to charity shops or on ebay.

But isn't this a class thing too? Buying everything new is considered the right thing by those who are trying to climb the social ladder, as they perceive it. The ex-MP diarist, Alan lLark, once referred scathingly to Michael Heseltine as being The sort of person who buys his own furniture!

MargueritaBlue · 19/08/2019 23:22

The ex-MP diarist, Alan Clark, once referred scathingly to Michael Heseltine as being The sort of person who buys his own furniture!

Once I had worked it out I was equally impressed and appalled by that insult.

MargueritaBlue · 19/08/2019 23:26

Pip is so annoying. Phoebe isn't much better.

MargueritaBlue · 19/08/2019 23:27

Scrub that Pip is much the worse of the 2.

BuckingFrolics · 20/08/2019 07:25

Phoebe reading from notes? No way. Would Oxford PPE not include stuff on giving presentations? She's supposed to be in the top top top academic elite yet her presentation was awful - telling the panel what they know as it's the reason for the opportunity in the first place, is not a winner.

StationView · 20/08/2019 07:49

Bucking, that's exactly what I thought about Phoebe. She's meant to have a degree in PPE, but she sounded like a fifteen year old doing her first ever presentation.
